Stacks Docklet

hi, first of all i want to appreciate your work. its cool that u use your skillz for the "community" and i see that it makes fun to u progamming all this stuff. i know this from AS. and one day i will learn this stuff too. so thanks and hopefully more soon

second i would like to add a couple of thougths. i`m using your stacks and its really a better workflow with it. i dont know if in leopard stacks it is the same, but i would like to have a little animation while i go through my files. it dont has to be some kind of bubble animation. more a marking stuff, like a quader in the background. what do u think about it?

and it would be awesome if u could use the right-mouse to get the contextmenu of each file

and whats about a doubleclick on the stackicon to open the explorer instantly, without stacks?

i would looove these features

Thanks for everything, fantastic work!

I also think the user should be able to do the same manipulations with the folders and files inside a stack as the objects on the dock. ie change icons, choose the order (by dragging and dropping), enable to drag and drop an object on the dock inside the stack etc.

I also suggested that before, but support for CLSID folders would be awesome!

Aeong, i think your suggestions would also make it a lot more userfriendly! i thought about all that too. The animation when going through files should also display the full name of the file that has the mouse over it!

Thanks! I had already noticed a bug that would make RocketDock launcher crash when I told it to stack with C:, but didn't know it was a corrupt image file.

Fixed, now it will show you the default icon for those images.

Edit: Forgot something:

If you click on one stack and then with out closing the first, on another, the dock keeps freezed an it looks not good

I like the version where the dock doesn't freeze. I mean the last version before adding "follow the dock". Nothing freezes. You can open a stack, then hover over or open other stacks or shortcuts without problems.

By the way: great work, the docklet is just 1-2 steps away from being just perfect.

I second the opinions to:

1. Add a scrollbar, scrollable with mouse wheel

2. Add a hovering indicator in grid mode (Leopard default)

3. Create virtual folders (like in kkmenu)

4. Be able to open the folder itself when double-clicking

5. Create substack function (stack within a stack, so that folders' content can be seen from the stack)

6. Support for CLSID folders (It'd be nice to create a stack out of My Computer)

7. Multi-line display for file names in Grid mode.

* Why not add a list view like in the next version of Leopard, too (and in previous versions of Mac)

I seem to be asking too much, but after all, you're the author and so you're the one in charge of what to implement. I'm just voicing out my opinions.

Oh yeah, when you arrange items by kind, I noticed that the items aren't 100% subsorted by name.

It's not CLSID folder (that's just a unique id describing a common folder). It's more about using the namespace in Windows (IShellFolder, PIDLs) instead of using the filesystem only. The filesystem is contained in this namespace.

Of course, nothing major changed between xp and vista (other than people think, backward compatibility of the API is a major idea of Windows and win32).

Replaced my own unicode textbox with a TnT Unicode Textbox (very recommended download, sadly the last version for Delphi 5 (freeware BTW)) it's very difficult to get and I had to download a corrupt zip file and fix it. It was that or nothing (as newer versions don't support Delphi 5 and aren't free anymore).

It works like a charm (the unicode textbox) (the "Folder:" textbox).

I noticed that the items aren't 100% subsorted by name.

Wow, this is indeed really really good, as I'm not subsorting by name at all... Ok, ok, I'll add that soon.

Leopard makes icon smaller and smaller, instead of using a scrollbar or mouse wheel.

Can someone make a mockup video? The stack should hide then other stack with the subfolder appears? I'm somewhat confused with this.

Given the small icons, and small Windows screens (iMacs have 1680x1050 that's really huge! haha) this would be a good optional setting. I'll consider it.

Ok, for CLSID and virtual folders would be a mess to implement, I'll implement other features before.

Then I'll do a plugin-based file enumeration and icon extraction system. This should allow me implementing CLSID/PIDL and virtual folders later without so much hassle.

just a try

given structure: folder "my pictures" > subfolders "pictures 1", "pictures 2", ... > pictures in subfolders.

clicking the dock icon that links to "my pictures" opens the stack with the subfolders. now we can only open those subfolders in explorer. i'd really love to open the subfolders in another stack, maybe with a right-click or shift-click or whatever click on the icon. so the stack "my pictures" would hide, and then the stack "pictures 1" would appear.

i don't know if this would mean "virtual folders"...

multiline would be great. but longer filenames (more characters) in stacks are necessary first, i think. with lucida grande, 8, bold i get "Open Fold..." in stacks, for example.

I would prefer an option for the user to choose whichever they prefer. If not, I would go with the leopard behavior. The idea behind docks is that you get what you need in your face. A mouse wheel will negate this.

3, 5-7: These enhancements would be great so long as they do not slow dock or animation. I cannot emphasize this enough, for it is what separates Apple from Microsoft. While Microsoft gives you more options and featurs, Apple keeps it simple (read less features) but stable, fast, and eye appealing.

I myself had to revert back to an earlier version of stackdock because the "move with dock" option slows the dock when on and tot ally freezes it when off. So, please no matter what enhancements you make, make sure it is fast and smooth.

But seriously, am I the only person experiencing this? Maybe I'm the only one with RKL on the right edge?

It seems that it doesn't work with RKLauncher, when it is on the right edge of the screen.
If RKL starts on the right side with Stacks, the stacks animation is briefly seen in the upper right corner.
If RKL is then moved to another side, stacks is correctly shown; if RKL is then moved back to the right, stacks appears in its previous place on the other side.
Other than that, no problems.
