[preview] Rk Dock

Hello, I'm new and sorry my english isn't very good... :slant:

I like so much this dock, excellent work radunking. I find a bug when you try to minimize winamp (to the taskbar or the system tray) if you have "minimize to dock" active. Winamp never minimize and a black pic goes to the dock. I attach an image of the bug.

If someone speak spanish, let me know. :P

@NC: thanks

@mikehc: that's weird... my winamp gets minimized to the dock but the playlist doesn't follow along with it... but I don't get a black image like you get...

ok, Hey RK. I want to suggest something for you, to make this feel more like the real apple dock.

The skinning engin u are using kind of suck, all the dock's I have seen are using this way of skinning. and it makes the dock look a bit ugly.

so here is my sugestment, I dont think it's to hard to implant, but how would I know, I'm not a developer.

dockskinning.jpg

ok, the first img is how the background png will look, it has the background and the sep in one png. and the second img is how it will skin, you can set up margins for were the left side (red) of the dock is, were the sep (blue) is, and the right side (green). and if you skin it this way, your dock will just be amazing and look amazing.

hope you reply. thnx

#249804

Magnus would that way of skinning create problems with adding extra seperators?

I've got the same problem.

#249836

have you decided on the icons yet??

#249861

I've just gotta say that I'm following this project since a while now - and I've gotta say: Great! The first Alpha is already breathtaking... keep on coding guy ;)

well "chatty cathy" has yet to make an appearance...

he's busy making the best dock ever

#250199

Magnus, that isn't the first time you request that the dock's background be drawn that way. You first requested it here and like I said in my reply to you then (which included a link and quote from an older Objectdock thread in which I requested the same thing), this would require that raduking recode a large portion, if not the entire source of his launcher (for use of a word other than 'dock') not to mention the speed benefits of its current drawing method, so unless he is willing to do so, don't count on it happening any time soon. Please stop requesting this. You made your point, I think I made mine, so just let it go.

And saying the skinning engine 'sucks' is a bit rude, or am I the only one that thinks so?

#250276

I agree, the beta release is almost here. For him to make a change to a large portion, if not all the source code, would not make sense. Besides the alpha version of this software is better than other dock out there, I can't imagine the beta being anything less than incredible! Great work Raduking! Thanks for all your hard work, it is greatly appreciated!

XP Icons would be the simplest thing, but they are owned by both Microsoft and Iconfactory (Yes, IF did the XP icons and they are diffinately the worst set they have produced).

Ask around, you may be surprised who will give you permission to use their icons in your program.

Uhm Yes XP icons are owned by Microsoft. Does that mean developers can not use original XP icons for their applications? Hmm... think about that one for a second before you post next time ;)

#250300

@pcw: Maybe you should read more acturately... I never said he couldn't use them.

Also, you can use the style, just as much as you can use the Aqua style icons with your applications, but that doesn't mean they'll allow you to use the ones they have already made.

In other words, you can make XP style icons but may not be able to use the IE (for example) icon in your application. You are allowed to make XP style icons because Iconfactory did the icons specifically for XP and Microsoft want XP to have a certain style.

RocKetLauncher is on its way to becoming the perfect dock clone. Great job, raduking!

Please add the following to your "to do" list. The first five items are features of the Mac Dock.

#1. When a shortcut appears, make sure the launcher still fits on the screen (shrink all the icons). I think the Mac Dock uses a minimum of 12 blank pixels on each side, so with a 1024x768 desktop the maximum dock width = 1000. Can someone verify this?

#2a. If sameInstance = 1, clicking the icon brings the window to the front but does not give it the focus (it should become the active window).

#2b. Also, it should bring ALL windows from that program to the front, like all open folders if you click on Finder.

#3. If you hold down the left mouse button on a shortcut for about one second (put this value in RocKetLauncher.ini), show the right click menu.

#4. The context menu for some icons on the Mac Dock lists the open windows for that program above "Keep In Dock" so you can switch to the window you want. Some icons (like Address Book) do not have this list since you can only open one window. It would be nice to have a new shortcut property to make your launcher do the same thing, like showOpenWindows = 1.

#5. The "Quit" menu item below a shortcut should close that program, not RocKetLauncher (the user probably shouldn't be allowed to close Explorer.exe). If the program is not "Keep In Dock," remove the icon after you close the program. If the user chooses File -> Exit to close a program, the icon should stay on his launcher until he chooses "Quit." This will make it seem like programs stay running until you Quit them, like on the Mac.

#6. Windows SDI programs like Explorer.exe and Notepad.exe do not have "New Window" commands like Finder and TextEdit, so each RocKetLauncher shortcut should have a property like newWindowItem (default = 0). If newWindowItem = 1, when you right click on that shortcut it should show "New shortcut name Window" (for example, "New Finder Window" or "New TextEdit Window"). Then you can use sameInstance = 1 to bring open Notepad windows to the front (like the Mac Dock), and right click to make a new window.

#7. Have a file like "applist.ini" or reserve a section of "RocKetLauncher.ini" for programs which are not always on the launcher. If you don't keep PhotoShop on the launcher, you can still tell it to use PhotoShop.png, sameInstance = 1, etc.

I hope you use some of my suggestions in a future version. Keep up the great work!

I have said this already, but this is the coolest "dock" yet.

I would like to add one more thing to the wish list. The real Dock lets you drag a file over a program icon and it luanches that programandopensthat file.

this is just a sugestion seeing that I don't know anything about programing or coding so if this can't be done, so be it. but it would be cool to have this drag and drop feature.

thanks for the great work. ;)

hehe, u didnt get me, oh well, that wasnt the same way of drawing it, this was a new way, why do you think I made a new image to show what I ment... well, **** it... I came up with a better sulution, and I asked rk to look into it. dont attac ppl just becouse u think u can. plz. I said that the skinning engin sucks a bit, freedom of speech, heard of it? well, I think it does, but this app ownz, I love it with my whole nerd computer life, so dont be an ass, ok? jesus

EDIT: ok, here goes, Last time, I asked for the dock to be in two parts, so the sep wouldnt infact be a sep, but the two parts meeting.

but now I'm asking rk to just add a few extra margins to the background png, so the sep can be in that png, and not in sep.png.. u get me? sorry for my bad english...

EDIT2: I'm sorry if Rk took this the bad way, It was not my intent, so I'm sorry..

#5 has already been discussed and what is in RK Launcher right now is the start of it.

#7. RK Launcher already sort of does this when you pick "never show " so I'm sure when the rest is enabled it will be able to do what you said in this idea because it has to if it is to allow you to customize the temporary item that is shown in the launcher.

Nice work so far. It's good to see another dock being in active development.

Its working pretty well and seems to be already stable enough for daily use.

As for features I miss - not many, because I think that a dock doesn't need much features anyway.

* folders which open in a menu would be nice (but not way OD+ does it with its annyoing fly out menus)

* adding items by drag'n drop (but I think, this is planned anyway).

* have an option to not stay always on top, but rather bring it on top when the mouse hovers it, and return focus to the last active window (i really found this useful in Yz).

Apart from that - try to keep it simple, resource friendly. A plugin/docklet API to extend it would be enough.

I'm not sure if this is how it goes in the Mac dock, but in RK, the labels show up AFTER everything has been magnified. Should it be the labels show up, and then are magnified with the rest of the dock?

I also found a bug. If you minimize a window, and then click on the dock (but don't move your mouse outside the dock area!), and then roll over to the other icons, the labels do not show.

-NC

#250388

It's too fast to see if the labels are supposed to appear first [on a Mac].

#250407

yeah right now, the speed is a bit slower, hence its alpha, he can worry about speed optimizations after, but once Raduking tweaks the Mag up, it can appear faster making the labels look like they came with it. because right now the magnification takes its time zooming up.

I was away this weekend visiting my parents...

Right now I'm workin' on the Alladin lamp effect.

I will take into consideration all your requests :)

#250497

I would like to second the feature requested above that if you drag a file onto a launcher icon, it opens that file using the program the launcher icon is a shortcut to. If the launcher icon is a shortcut to a folder, it'll copy or move the file to that folder (using Windows conventions)
