General thoughts on Vista?
How fabulous!!!Next person who flames in here gets a week vacation.
I've used it. I didn't like it. It wasn't pretty enough (yes, I am shallow), the fonts look terrible, and there is no reason for me to upgrade my x86 machine, if it were even running. There was too much hype that it really didn't live up to.
I installed it last Thursday, then deleted the partition on Saturday. I guess the drivers with my video card (ATI) and external sound card (aka DJ Console) were conflicting which caused Vista to automatically shut down (every time I plugged in the console). I guess it's when I installed the ATI catalyst package. I'm too lazy to deal with the issue, so I got rid of Vista over all.
My system score was 4.8.
It ran pretty smoothly, as I must admit. Vista isn't my taste in an operating system.

im going to take an estimate here. after....say.....SP1...Vista will be worth upgrading to. Then again, its wiser to buy a new machine all together if your gonna wait that long
You may want to wait till 2009. Rumor is Microsoft has another Windows planned for release around then. Personally I think it's just a rumor. But you never know, Vista could be like Windows ME. An inbetween OS. But instead of it being between 2000 and XP it'd be between XP and ?.
One thing I wonder about is.. why did Microsoft scrap the new file system they were working on?
Nah, Vista took 5 years to make, how many billions did it cost them? Eh anyway, Vista had too much time and money to be included in even the same ballpark as Windows ME. Windows Vienna they say is due in 2009 but we all know Microsoft has a bad reputation for delaying things longer. If they say 2.5 years then I say atleast 3.5 years till release. And rumor has it Codename Vienna is 64bit only, so everyone without a 64bit compliant processor better start upgrading.

Actually I believe they have, I read the name has been changed to Windows Server 2007.
They used XP's SP2 as a reason for delaying Vista's development. So im guessing they'll do the same with Vista's SP1 and SP3 for XP(still more than a year away from even seeing the light of day).
Vista isn't a bad operational system, we don't expect a perfect OS. What sucks is that it takes a lot of memory, it needs a good hard drive and graphical card. Beyond all those, the only I have is the graphic adapter, which is not the best, but compatible with Aero (GeForce 6200).
Let's say, I have a 40gb hard drive. If Vista takes 15gb, I'll be with 25gb, and so I am now with all my stuff installed.
My RAM, 512mb. Not nice for Aero, it'll be instantly disabled.
So, what I want to say is that even though it is a nice OS, I'll not be able to use its best feature, and that sucks.

I haven't been keeping up on the new server name, Windows Home Server 2007... BORING.. but anyway.
As for Vista and memory usage... please read the previous posts. It DOES NOT require a boatload of memory.
It manages memory differently than the way XP does.
So it APPEARS to require a huge amount of memory, but in reality, it will run ok with 512MB.
1GB would be better.
As for Aero... it depends on the amount of video memory you have and what GPU you have. system memory is not really a major factor in whether Vista will enable it or not.
Your video card will either support it or it won't, there is no in between.
The 6200 is a Pixel Shader 2.0 card if im not mistaken, so Aero should work.
Windows Home Server isnt the same as Longhorn by the way.

I wish they'd loose the stupid castle and shield icons... it makes it look like it's some swords and dragons fantasy game... my liege!
In fact the whole ui looks pretty awful for five years of developement. It's too 'in yer face'.
heh.icons. i still HATE (AND I MEAN HAATEE) the stupid little shortcut image in the lower corner of the icon. i want them GONE!!!! i mean seriously, what an eyesore!
Are you speaking of the little arrows that signify the icon as a shortcut. You can get rid of them with tweak UI.
I will testify that Vista'll run on most anything. It ran smoothly in beta, glitch free, on my MacBook with integrated graphics and a gig of RAM. It also runs fine on some of our work computers, albeit with driver troubles.
I was surprised at how easy my upgrade from WinXP Pro to Vista Ultimate went...I ran the upgrade advisor first and it told me my old Primascan scanner wouldn't work after the upgrade, so I thought "oh well....it's 6 years old...I can spring for a new scanner".
After the upgrade I had to get an update to Nero 7, update Symantec AV from 10.1 to 10.2 and stop some stupid HP imaging s/w from trying to startup upon login.
If I run my Logitech Harmony remote software it makes Areo "glass" go away because it's supposedly doing some crazy crap (according to the vista dialog that pops up), so I get the Aero "non-glass" view while it's running.
Best of all....I fired up the Windows Scanner and Fax wizard....and my scanner still works fine!
I haven't yet fired back up Avedesk and Yahoo Widget engine, but Objectdock Plus works just fine.

TweakUI can remove it...i knew that. What i was meaning was that its not built-in to the OS. If i modded Vista i would make it work perfectly. Im talking about how MS wnated it to look.....how it comes stock if you will...
TweakUI is written by Microsoft, so one could argue the ability is there and can be accessed by installing a simple add-on program.
Or you can just edit the registry entry, which is what TweakUI does in the first place.
Same thing applies to OS X... try and remove the shortcut icon. You can't without the assistance of another piece of software that does not come with the OS by default.
well what i was saying was that it shouldnt even be there in the first place....does that clear it up?
also, it would be necessary to remove the "hide extensions for known file types", since it would be chaos differentiating between a shortcut to a folder and a folder, or any file.
Thats what the shortcut arrow is for.

Also, I am curious, has anyone been able to sync their ipod w/ Vista? If not itunes, did yamipod work?
And how about the "Search" feature? I personally enjoy Launchy much more than Vista's search feature and have heard the same from other's how have used Launchy in the past.
