General thoughts on Vista?

ok seriously. Vista....sucks!

its a new OS, so im not gonna be too hard on it.

Once a couple service packs come out (which inevitably will happen) im sure it will be better.

I like the Aero interface, but thats basically all i like about it, and the sidebar, which i just got a 3rd party app for XP, so thats nothing special.

im just gonna wait until SPs come out, then ill try it again

Bleh :slant:. Your original title was pretty much flamebait. Let's try and have threads with more constructive purposes and titles, eh?

I'll flame anyway.

So you say it sucks without having used it... :slant:

What an absolutely moronic statement.

I give up... ****ing idiots everywhere with little or no ability to use the brain they were born with.

I know I may be going off a bit here, but this is like the 50th time I've heard some dim wit say how much they think Vista sucks, yet they never sat down and used it.

No, it's not the end all of OS' and it's far from perfect, but gimme a ****ing break.

Would you rate how good a car is based on what SOMEONE else says, or some hyped up pics in an ad?

**** no... you take it for a test drive and decide for yourself.

There are things about it that drive me up a wall, but would I go back to XP... hell no.

Vista wipes the floor up with XP in security, functionality and just about everything else.

rjohnstone, I renamed the thread for your sake, before you even posted...I anticipated you'd do something like this :P. -NC

That was very kind of you. ;)

Well said rjohnstone, Vista has it's issues, by all in all I thinks it's a great system. Just like when XP came out, people where leary, myself included.

I beta tested Vista and bought it the day it came out, I learn something new everyday, and think to myself it will only get better.

I wonder if metallicamaster3 enjoyed that wonderful OS Windows Millenium, I think we can all agree that it wasn't one of Microsofts finest hours.

I agree with you. I haven't used Vista, so I'm withholding my final judgement on it. There are a couple of things that I can already see annoying me (the User Account Control is a biggie), but I'm not going to flame it yet. I'm glad Microsoft is finally waking up. That said, I'm more excited about Leopard.

#443302

I have used it. Both the 2nd Beta late last year and the RTM this year. My home box wasn't beefy enough to run the Aero (only reason I wanted to install Vista) and having only 512 MB it was atrociously slow.

Fastfoward to the past 2 weeks...I have been using Vista at work, on a brand new beast machine, and I am still not impressed. The Aero does look nice, but I dislike the fact that the OS eats resources like there is no tomorrow.

I have also found that it is not ready for release. It (IMHO) is not stable enough, supportive enough to have been released. There are issues with compatibility, both Hardware and Software. I also dislike how if you go to buy a new computer now, you either Have to get Vista or pay like an extra hundred $$ to get XP. Does this make any sense? They are charging extra for an older / cheaper OS.

My last beef with Vista is the DRM. I absolutely despise DRM and everything that it stands for. If I purchase something, then it is mine and I should not have big brother telling what I can and cannot do with it. This is the main reason I am a big supporter of open source and piracy.

All of these reasons and more are why I installed Linux and refuse to install Vista on my home computer. I deal with its problems enough at work. And when I go home, I like to have something that looks pretty and works. Ubuntu and Beryl FTW.

#443303

my point exactly.

and actually i HAVE used Vista, and like i said, it sucks!

just to rub it in your face, hold your tongue if if didnt roll of mine!

so all those things you said about me not trying Vista yadda yadda...it wasnt true.

pssht.

#443305

metallicamaster .... you sure have a way with people. I see you've edited your first post and taken out the part where you said you didn't use Vista. That, in my eyes only makes you look like more of a d!ck.

#443307

User access control, DRM, lack of backward compatibility... those all sound just like OS X features.

DRM is a fact of life today and Apple would be dead without it.

The iPod and the entire iTunes product and site exist because of it. You don't have a choice.

Tell me how many of you were ever able to go back to the iTunes store and re-download the music you already paid for when iTunes and or your iPod crashed and you lost everything. None of you have. Why, because you don't own it... you license it's use and paid for a one-time download. DRM policies at it's finest. DRM is more than just a piece of code... it's a way of business.

Microsoft already said they would drop it in a heartbeat if they could.

Apple uses a TPM module in their hardware to control the usage of OS X. It's DRM'd.

Sure there are illegal ways to make it work, but the fact is, the OS itself has DRM protection written into its core.

@metallicamaster3 - I never said you didn't "try" it, I said you never "used" it.

There is a big difference between "trying" something out and actually "using" it.

Look it up in the dictionary. Two totally different meanings.

Anyone who has ever done product testing knows the difference.

Overall, I like Vista, but I am a Mac user, and I may dual boot them in the future. I have tried Vista at a Best Buy, but that doesn't count as using it, I know that.

About DRM, that is why I applaud Steve Jobs for writing his opinions on it (even if people took it a different way then intended.

Also, an unspoken rule of losing your music is that if you send Apple a nice email, explaining your situation, they let your redownload all of it. But, next time it happens, they tell you to keep backups.

How long have you tried it? And what did you do wile trying it?

You cant just claim to have tried it and say it sucks, gives us a detailed explanation as to why you don't like it.

Your whole approach to this is pretty immature if you ask me. ;) - A little less crying and a little more discription might get you a little more respect. Like denying editing your post. A bit of a hint here man; Look right below your sig "Last edited by metallicamaster3 : 48 Minutes Ago at 06:43 PM. ".

And sidebar for XP is actually considered warez - soooo.... it isn't official for XP.

#443313

Hmm, I would say Microsoft understood it's problem but didnt solve it yet...

(I mean mostly to invest in the capabilities of their UI engine)

1) The UI Engine know has the power to compete with every other OS

2) As like OSX the performance of the Vista Kernel could improve a lot over time

3) and hopefully they fire their designers, cause even if i am a (little bit more) convinced Windows user i must say the design is horrible (much more annoying as XP. Who needs such huge borders???) and i really dont understand why they dont get some guys like StefanKa to improve it ;-)

4) The 64bit support really rocks if your app takes advantages of this. I always ran into memory problems at work, but now there's far enough memory for everything i need.

5) Overall Vista is in the beginning and as one of the other users said... just wait... There will be for sure some huge improvements over time

6) And also dont forget the case that Vista has to cope with much more problems than any 'Apple OS' because they dont have sooo much control over the harware of their systems like Apple does.

#443315

well heres a little wrap up from some of my conclusions...

i LOVE the GUI, but hate the functions.

If XP had the exact same GUI as Vista, then that would be P-E-R-F-E-C-T!!

#443316

It'd be stupid, because the UI is one of the less important things about Vista.

#443319

then what is important?

i want all the features, like the sidebar, Aero, everything- for XP

if thats not the greatest thing, then what is?

heh besides the 64bit ;)

#443323

How 'bout productivity? Get in - get out. Get 'er done. Right now I spend lots of my day keeping a bunch of XP's running. If Vista proves easier....sign me up. BTW... ima Macuser at home.

#443326

Yeah, productivity kinda dropped off the scale for me when I attempted to run AutoCAD on my computer running Vista...Totally unsupported. Like, wouldn't even be allowed to run.

Also, other programs that seemed commonplace would halt the system for a few seconds, dim the screen, and pop up a dialog box that says something along the lines of "do you know what this program is and where it came from? Cancel/Allow" and it was frustrating to have to do that WAY too often.

Lack of productivity made me revert to XP.

DISCLAIMER:

I was using Vista Beta 2...they may have fixed some of the more irritating things by now.

#443347

Here are my thoughts. Note, I haven't actually installed Vista. I downloaded an RTM version but I never bothered installing it. Mainly cause I don't have any space for it and didn't want to hassle with it. So my thoughts are based on what I've read, discussed, and watched on youtube about Vista.

So ok.

Vista's GUI. Well the Aero or Glass interface (whatever it is people are raving about). I frankly don't see the fuss is about. The sidebar I can't imagine myself using it. Mainly because although I now run 2x17 inch monitors I actually use a ton of the screen space. Whether it's for windows (which are usually maximized to take up the entire space). I do have a couple widgets running. A picture one, one sticky note, and weather. Which reside on the desktop and are summoned when I press F9. That leads me to dreamscene. Anyone wanting to see what it's like who don't have Vista Ultimate. Download VLC Player, open any video file, right click the player and click "set as background". Viola. I tried it (to see what it would be like). And while it was cool in the beginning it suffers the same problem as the sidebar. I actually use windows that cover up the desktop -_-. So that cool effect in the wallpaper is pretty much useless to me. This also happens to be the reason why I don't use desktop icons.

Vista's Live Preview. I'm not sure about how it works (though I've read that it needs WMP11)? Well if it requires WMP11 then bleh. That's already one problem with it. Another thing I don't see useful about it is I probably wouldn't be able to see (besides a thumbnail of whatever is playing) if it's minimized to my dock. I can see some usefulness if I alt+tab though. This leads me to two or three things in my next paragraph.

The tasktips or whatever you get when you hover your mouse cursor over a task in the taskbar. The previews are pretty small, and I don't find them useful. Opera's browser has this feature and while it is cool in the beginning I find that I don't use it at all. Mainly because I can remember what every window is running even when it's not the focused one. And if my mouse cursor is near that running window it's because there's something I wanna do in it.

The alt+tab. Flip 3D I believe it's called? Not a fan. I prefer something like Expose (which there are 3rd party software for both Vista and XP. So when I do run Vista I'll be using that instead of Flip3D).

Now for something I do like.

I like the voice recognition. I have Dragon Naturally Speaking on my computer and after training it works pretty well. I don't use it to replace my mouse (though I could if I wanted to). So having that built into Vista is good.

I like the idea of ReadyBoost though I don't think it'll be useful for me. It's like a paging file to me (faster though). And I personally don't like the paging file. I try to force Windows to use my physical RAM when possible. I run my systems with a minimum of 1 GB. With my current system planning an upgrade to 2GBs of memory.

The other features in Vista I'm kinda "eh" about. I can see their usefulness to me. Though I'll probably wind up turning them off. Like limited users. I like having an admin account, just because. I've only had security problems once in my entire experience of computers. And that's because I was a kid playing a game and some player sent me a trojan to steal my account. That game was Alien Adoption Agency (which has changed drastically now..).

I'd love to have a discussion with any Vista users (who have the final release) about any other features I missed. I personally won't be using it till SP1 or SP2. Till the majority of software I use in my day to day use is supported, the tweaks are done, and the software I rarely use have some Vista alternative).

#443350

The only thing I hate about the Vista is that some of the system tray icons still look crap.

#443351

The only thing I hate about the Vista is that some of the system tray icons still look crap.

Yea... the tray icons are weak. Microsoft went through the trouble of hiring former OS X icon designers, they could have at least let them have a crack at it.

That dim screen thing IS annoying. It's the User Access Control component. You can turn it off.

It's to prevent n00bs from doing something stupid. Pros should disable it.

Things have changed since Beta 2.

As for AutoCAD, blame the vendor. Microsoft had released the requirements ages ago.

Most companies already have Vista updates for their apps. The more greedy bunch (Symantec, Network Associates, etc...) force you to upgrade to a newer version for a SMALL fee.

#443357

heh.

icons. i still HATE (AND I MEAN HAATEE) the stupid little shortcut image in the lower corner of the icon. i want them GONE!!!! i mean seriously, what an eyesore!

edit: how is a sidebar for XP a warez? its simply a clone.

IF that is a warez, then i guess Flyakite, Nexplorer, Safari for Windows, etc are all warez to right?

#443390

I would think more or less yes, no one has permission or written consent from Apple/Microsoft to put those files/icons on XP do they?

I'm not talking about some SidebarXP program, I mean using the actual Vista sidebar on XP.
