General thoughts on Vista?

oh. yes than that would be a warez. i was talknig about a 3rd party program. i totally agree because it was a clone.

@astyanax - are you an emulator? yes or no i have some interest on how your desktop looks...can you upload a ss of your desktop and then PM it to me?

if youd like i will send you a ss of mine ;)

No im not an emulator, I have bought a copy of Ultimate edition :)

I have done a regedit to remove the shortcut arrow though. Try googling around, I just remember it was off of neowin.

#443399

well well well ;) can you give me a ss of it anyway? i want to see how Vista is for you ;)

#443400

Sure lol

#443403

:D...

uhmm....wwhere is it :( lol

#443404

oops my bad...

woah. nice.

so tell me, whats you most FAVORITE thing about Vista?

edit: PS are you willing to share that beautiful wallpaper :D

#443406

Memory Management. It destroys XP completely. I went back to XP before buying a legit copy and I had no idea how less resonsive XP really was.

oh by far!

the only way you can get that performance with XP is with at least 3gigz of ram and at least a 200GB Hard Drive. Thats how i get my performace out of XP :/ i guess thats one good thing about Vista...

well you want to see mine now? ;)

Well I have 2gb of ram and a 200gb drive, and an X2 4400 toledo, I gotta say XP is not even close to being as responsive as Vista.

EDIT: Sure :)

#443409

are you people on glue? the memory management is horrid in vista. even if you do have a shiteload of memory.

#443416

Damn, thats vista? Hardly recognizable :P

jhorner - Go google what superfetch is, you have A LOT of reading to do. What Vista displays for ram usage is NOT correct. It also displays cached apps/whatever in the memory. Someone with a gig of ram will have say 34% of his ram used as will someone with 2GB of ram. Its nothing like XP's memory management. Apparently we arent the ones on glue.

I cant stand when people enter a conversation and have no clue what they are talking about.

metallicamaster3, if it wasn't 18 hours since you posted some things, you would be suspended now.

Next person who flames in here gets a week vacation.

#443423

I don't even think that's Vista.

Those are just his screenshots.

#443426

Edit: Oops someone else already answered.

#443429

Metallicamaster3's screenshots are XP, not Vista.

Astyanax's screenshots are from Vista.

And yea, the memory utilization display is misleading if you do not understand how superfetch functions.

#443433

@ asty : I know about superfetch and all of the "features" regarding windows vista. I am not going by what microsoft has posted on their website regarding capabilities, I am going by my personal experience running the operating system.

As stated previously, I have used the OS on both a low-end box and a brand new machine (3.0 Ghz cup, 2 Gigs of mem and a 256 MB gpu). The response time on the new box was significantly faster, but still slow. For what aero and vista does, it should not require that many resources.

#443437

Its more than likely drivers.

What kind of GPU is it? nVidia? ATi? Also what bus type? PCI-E or AGP?

#443438

Holy Batman Asty, your PC managed to get a 5 on the screen where Vista rates your pc?

Mother of god ... o_O

What do you have in that beast? :P

#443451

my sincere apologys...={

edit: sorry if this is a stupid question....but what does that little "downward arrow" mean in front of the post name? its not that im a n00b, i just never knew what it ment :P

#443452

Yea... like Asty said.

I had a few issues with graphics acceleration until I updated to new video drivers for my ATI X1300 card.

I think that is still going to be the single biggest issue with Vista for the short term. Drivers are still a bit scarce. Microsoft has a good set of generic ones for a lot of hardware, but they are not feature specific, so they do not perform well. The ATI drivers were horrible. ATI FINALLY released a set a few weeks back and they are awesome. Full Catalyst support for all Radeon X series cards is now available.

J... what exactly do you mean by slow? Apps opening, searching, execution...?

The thing about superfetch is that it has to "learn" your habits. The more you use it the better the system responds. It's a time thing.

I'm running Ultimate on a dual core Pentium D 920 with 2GB of ram and an ATI X1300 PCI-E card with 256MB of ram. I'm also using 2x 250GB SATA HD's.

It originally shipped with XP MCE and when I installed Vista Ultimate, it was similar in speed at first, but got faster at opening things like Photoshop and Imageready over the next few days.

Under XP MCE, it would take about 30 seconds to fully load. Under Vista, it went from 25 seconds to 12, in just a few days.

Boot up time also got faster as well. From 37 seconds (power switch to login screen) down to 18.

Logins got faster... 12 seconds to a usable desktop down to 7.

It's been pretty static for a while now, so until I install a new app or change my habits, I suspect it will stay that way.

#443454

hm. i wish that was possible for XP! that looks like another nice feature.

#443455

Gee Willikers Asty, your PC managed to get a 5 on the screen where Vista rates your pc?

Mother of god ... o_O

What do you have in that beast? :P

AMD 64 X2 4400+ Toledo

eVGA 7900GTO 256mb

OCZ Plat Series 2GB (2x1GB)

Maxtor 16mb Cache 200GB Sata 1.5 Drive

;)

@rjohnstone: Yeah the drivers for ATi always lacked in the beta, then all of a sudden they released drivers that kicked nVidia's ass, their still trying to make up for it. My framerate is slowly increasing, hopefully nVidia can put out some drivers with equal performance to XP... SOON PLEASE!!! :P

#443456

64 bit... my next upgrade.

The best rating I got on my system is a 3.3 and that was after the ATI driver update. :(

I got 4.5 - 5.1 on my whole system except for my video. 3.3

The rating is your lowest score, not the average.
