@frenzyfloyd: I agree with you. There many names that come into my mind before Thom Yorke when I think about talented singers/songwriters, such as the ones you listed or Maynard James Keenan himself.

And now a little question What genre would you say Tool is? No much time ago I heard "Art metal"...

To put further voice to the dissident - I don't like Coldplay or Radiohead. Like deadzombie, I appreciate (1) musical ability (2) catchy (and/or meaningful) lyrics and, personally, (3) at least semi-intelligent singing...

I have fairly eclectic tastes in music, although it might not be evident from all the rock I listen to. :hey_suga:

I like a lot of modern or "alternative" rock, including Ben Folds, older Offspring, Caedmon's Call, Evanescence, The Wallflowers, Goldfinger, Smashing Pumpkins (too bad they broke up, they were brilliant), older Green Day (not their latest "efforts"), Athenaeum, Garbage, Apocalyptica, and Gravity Kills.

Then there're my favorite '80s-'90s bands Blue Öyster Cult, R.E.M., and, of course, They Might Be Giants. Not to mention Billy Joel, though he's not '80s per se, he's obviously been around a bit longer than that.

In random other genres I prefer John Coltrane, St. Germain, Fatboy Slim, DCI drum cadences, Ayumi Hamasaki, taiko drumming, Yo Yo Ma, Tim McGraw, and Brooks & Dunn. Not to mention a few soundtracks from musicals and movies: Pippin, Phantom of the Opera, The Producers, The King & I, The Pajama Game, The Matrix Reloaded, "Cowboy Bebop" (the series), and Carmina Burana.

Edit: Oh, and VideoMann, I'm not really seeing the point behind your (excessively long) post - yes, I understand that you're on a rant against politics in the forums, and trying to argue that talking about political bands constitutes more of the same problem - yet the article you posted seems to be actually in favor of political bands, not against them, despite your caption to the effect that

The article in and of itself doesn't argue that all of that is problematic...I'm guessing you read it and thought that it jibed well with your conception of what's wrong with politally-oriented bands -- but a lot of others would read that and think, "Yeah, so? They do all that--and this is a problem because...?"

I don't want to get into politics, either - I'm not particularly into bands with a "political message", nor am I particularly against them. If a group I like gets political, it doesn't really matter to me, I'll continue to listen to their music as long as it sounds good. I just don't think this is the issue you're trying to make it, though.

I dont like new metal, personally i think theyre pretty pointless, 'kill your family' lyrics. But I like old metal, Metallica, AC/DC to name a few.

I mainly like new punk rock and pop-punk stuff. Alkaline Trio, AFi *a fire inside, Blink 182, BoxCar Racer, Less Than Jake, NOFX.

And to the guy who said that 'immaturity, rebellious...' of punk rock bands, isn't that what makes individuals. Jackass shows us immaturity is funny, and if no one was rebellious wouldnt we all just turn into mind numb statistics.

I'm not trying to force my musical likes on anyone, and I dont think anyone should *glares at article* :rant: but I think music should require talent.

Stuff like Pop-Idol really pisses me off, I think that that talent-less artists shouldn't be alowed to top the charts, but I guess, whatever.

And by the way, music is only a type of art, which means that may be used to express the human feelings through it (like disconformity to the system among other things). With this I mean political bands are not strictrly related with young, rebel and immature people, but with an alternative stream that dares to criticize unfair social situations.

No, I don't agree with you on this. Being funny by endangering lives does not make something worthwhile and in fact it has created fines and jail terms for being "funny ". The so called Jack-Ass movies are socially irresponsible because they have been responsible for encouraging countless loss of lives, maiming, and higher bills for medical insurance, home insurance, car insurance etc. . There are people that have set themselves on fire, broken bones, and broken backs (making people paraplegic or quadriplegic). You can argue that those people are responsible for their actions totally but the law does not agree with that if you are portraying a video as if anybody can do it. This forces the videos to have a disclaimer label but if people keep imitating those stunts then stronger legislation is needed to restrict the sale just like X-rated movies or other adult content. The fact that non-adults are exposed to actions where they do not have the maturity to look at it as simple entertainment and see that it is a photographic trick or other precautions are taken to safeguard life and health. Any of these immature teenagers that imitate the JackAss movies and get hurt are the first to call a lawyer and sue ironically. In most cases large cash settlements are done on the side because the film is marketed to young people that lack the maturity to make good judgment of what is being portrayed. In the U.S. I believe MTV took them off due to too many lawsuits on liability and are now a separate company selling videos.

In other cases of people trying to make similar movie stunts as in JackAss, they will hire drunkards and druggies from the street pay them $50 U.S. to make a stunt and try to resell that as a series of video clips to people that think it's funny.

If you ask me the whole sale & distribution of Jack-Ass videos should be made illegal based on the fact that it has little or no regulation to safeguard health and safety or it should be sold as adult material ( which most adults would end up not buying because of its stupid content ). The movie industry spends millions of dollars to ensure the stunt people take precautions; this is not the same case in these movies. Hollywood movies in this case are heavily regulated to the benefits of actors, stunts, and the industry itself.

How many of you even pay attention to the other threads anymore? I see where all of you spend your time. It's in here, waiting for the next flame war so you can have your go at some poor sap that doesnt deserve it.

Maybe some of you need to step AWAY from the monitor and let the sun smack you in the face for an hour or two. Go outside and play, explore, LIVE for crying out loud.

Speaking of diffusing rhetoric, yes...I finally broke down and replied here. But as you see, I waited until it fell apart again. Had it gone on without the daily dose of "I'm right and YOU are WRONG!" I might never have replied...but alas, the wonders of a select few being highly predictable. Well here I am...AGAIN.
