AveDesk 1.2 Bugs

This isn't strictly an Avedesk bug but I could use some help;

I have a problem where i have 3 USB devices which are plugged in or switched off at different times. (Ipod, USB drive etc). Windows adds them to 'my computer' in the order they're plugged in which plays hell with the drive letter; thus a named drive desklet might not open up the right USB device. Can i get round this somehow? Perhaps with Windows settings?

You can fix this in Windows.

Go to Start->[settings->]Control Panel->Administrative Tools (put it into Classic View)->Computer Management.

Plug in your USB devices (all at the same time preferably) and then click on Disk Management.

Here you will see a listing of all the partitions and physical drives in your computer. Right click on the item that you want to change the drive letter of and select Change Drive Letter and Paths.

Choose three drive letters further along the alphabet for each of the devices, and just have AveDesk point to those instead.

Cheers!

@D14852001neko: AveDesk 1.2 saves the last removed desklets in %APPDATA%/AveDesk/Defaults and will use the settings of the last removed desklet for every newly added 'unskinned' desklet. Try to clear the %APPDATA%/AveDesk/Defaults

Hey it works, is there a way in which AveDesk could detect the removable devices? Or use a "secure" link? like C:? instead of the last one used??

Thnx!

Short Description: PIDL shortcut can't launch an Excel document

Item involving: PIDL shortcut and/or DesktopGrabber

Your Machine specs (OS, CPU, anything you think is relevant):

Steps to reproduce it: Create a PIDL shortcut pointing to an excel document, or use desktopgrabber to convert an excel document that has been dragged to the desktop into a desklet. click on the desklet. I get the following error: "C:Documents and SettingskmccormiMy DocumentsTo Do.xls - The parameter is incorrect." I don't know if there is anything specific I need to enter into the parameter field for the desklet, but I didn't think a simple excel document would require one ... a desklet linking to a word document opens the file up in Word without problem.

just guessing here: try changing 'to do.xls' to 'todo.xls' (no space). wild guess. pulling it outta my...

Short Description: Desklets are disappearing from the desktop when I use always-on-bottom or normal window behavior

Item involving: Desklets

Your Machine specs (OS, CPU, anything you think is relevant): I don't think any of it is relevant, except that I'm using Litestep, which I've discovered is the problem. It's important to know that I didn't have this problem with 1.1, except when I used always-on-bottom. This wasn't a problem though, because I would just use normal window behavior and everything would be fine.

Steps to reproduce it: Well the way the desklets are disappearing and reappearing is kind of confusing, so I won't bother describing that to you. Basically though, it seems like Litestep is being treated as a windows and going "in front of" avedesk at certain times. Like I said, it worked fine with 1.1. What I'm thinking is, is there a way to make Litestep an always-on-bottom app? I think this might fix it.

Misc. question - why do desktop icon and always-on-top do the same thing? When I think desktop icon, I don't really think of it being on top of everything.

Short Description: Losing Systats configs

Item involving: Systats Desklets

Your Machine specs (OS, CPU, anything you think is relevant): WinXP, but I don't think this part maters

Steps to reproduce it: When Avedesk either doesn't shut down properly or something (I don't really know what), after starting Avedesk up again, Systats desklets won't work (various things won't load). If you look at the actual config file for the desklets, you can see that lines have gotten jumbled around and/or the config file was only partially written to and lines are missing. The only way to fix is to load a backup copy of the config file.

Short Description: Icons disappear on hover/click using certain styles.

Item Involving: Using AveDesk with bbLean shell.

Machine Specs: Athlon XP 2100+, XPw/sp2, bbLean shell 1.13b6

Steps to Reproduce:

Selecting the appearance styles: Normal Window/Always on Bottom will result in the problem.

The Showcase style behave as expected. The "Desktop Icon" and "Always on Top" styles behave the same; that being the icon is always on top.

bbLean controls the desktop presumably more than most other shell replacements. No desktop icons are drawn, but wallpaper can be handled through the shell.

Using AveDesk on other shells usually would require me to enable the "Alway on Bottom" feature to make it behave as desktop icons. However, even that doesn't work.

At first I thought it was the shell that caused the issue. However, now I am not so sure as Samurize behaves fine with respect to widget/icon visibility.

edit:

I played around some more and found that the "Normal Window" mode works to an extent. Any sort of clicking on such an icon would cause the label to disappear. If the label is set to appear on hover, the whole icon disappears.

Status: comp. issues with alternate shells: investigating

#259268

^^^ This is the same problem as mine, and it's probably your shell. For whatever reason, I think it's being treated as a "window" that can be behind and in front of things, and the wallpaper is sort of included in this. I don't know, it's weird. Try ending your shell's process and seeing if you're still having the problem. Samurize works OK for me, too.

I have re-installed AveDesk, and am having the following issue:

Short description: Ave Desk lost all desklets from the screen and control panel. Reloading saved themes did not resolve the issue. It's almost as if the data within the saved themes was wiped out somehow. Pidl shortcuts were saved with "desktop icon" selected, 2 systats configs saved as "always on bottom"

Item involving: ???

Your Machine specs: XPSP2, AMD Athlon 850, 512 MB PC133

Steps to reproduce it: Reboot computer, saved theme/setting do not come in. try to load individual theme manually, but nothing happens.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

Just turned my computer on again, and same story.

Saved themes fail to load. Tried to manually load eachof the 3 that are saved.

I'm at my wit's end trying to figure this out.

Posting the config would help

#259483

Short Description: Systats configs will load and work until you shutdown Avedesk and re-open it. It then complains that c:avedeskdesklets.....systats.dll cannot be loaded which makes all systat desklets essentiall disappear.

Config/theme files all corrupted as well now.

Item involving: Systats/active drive.ini

Your Machine specs (OS, CPU, anything you think is relevant): Windows XP SP2,Athlon XP 2800+ (2GHz) ATI Radeon 9600 XT, RAM 1.5GB.

Steps to reproduce it: Add a systats desklet, set it up, etc. Save the theme. Shut down avedesk, restart it Viola!

"cannot load avedesk......systats.dll

Status: Stumped. I haven't seen a response yet so I thought I would put in my 2 cents.

#259603

Im glad, well not glad, but its good to see im not the only guy with the systats problem. I've restarted Avedesk many times and my 3 systats desklets worked fine, then all of a sudden my miniweather big wouldnt load the actual weather or icons, but the miniweather mini and mid size worked fine. Then all of a sudden, I boot up and the weather is totally gone, and my other two systats have no information on them, only the background image. Hopefully a new systats will be out soon.

Short description: SysStats docklets doesn't show unless I right click on my desktop when set to either "normal windows" or "always on bottom". If I select "desktop icon" they are always on top of other windows. So it's basically all hidden or all on top.

Item involving: SysStats docklets

Your Machine specs: I'm running Litestep for my primary shell on windows 2003 web edition. 2.8 GHz P4, 1GB ram, 256 MB ATI Radeon 9500.

Steps to reproduce it: All sysstats docklets suffer from this behavior everytime. I tried both old version and 2.5 but no luck.

Atleast "normal window" worked ok when I was using avedesk 1.1 and sysstats 2.03.

Short description: Sub-label feature for drives (free space, FS, etc..) not working with my iPod mini.

Item involving: PIDL

Your Machine specs: Windows XP SP2, iPod mini (firmware 1.3) on USB port

Steps to reproduce it: Plug in iPod, make a PIDL for it (with sub-label info). The info WILL NOT show up.

Status: nothing -> I can't check because I don't have an iPod mini (hint, hint)

#261515

Short description: Not so much a bug, but rather an annoying shortcoming. I add my pidlshortcuts via desktopgrabber, and I wrote a script to rename all the shortcuts quickly, but since the default option is to revert the captions back to the shortcut's filename, this setting never lasts. I have to go through all of my shortcuts (and there's about 50) and go to the Label Format page of the properties to turn this setting off. There is no default setting for Label Format.

Item involving: pidlshortcut (desktopgrabber)

Your Machine specs: Windows XP SP2

Steps to reproduce it: drag shortcuts to desktop with desktopgrabber installed, rename objects, close avedesk, reopen avedesk.

Status: design error

#262165

Short Description: PidlShortcut using "Shell:xxxxx" paths doesn't show file counts and sizes.

Item involving: PidlShortcut

Your Machine specs (OS, CPU, anything you think is relevant): WinXP SP2

Steps to reproduce it:

  1. Create a new PidlShortcut desklet
  2. Set the path to Shell:Personal
  3. Set the Label Format to %r%f files - %s
  4. Make sure the Sublabel is set to display

Note: It works fine if I change the path to the actual location of the "My Documents" folder, but then the icon is no longer inherited from the system and I have to change it manually.

Status: good one, need to think about how to solve it actually

#262618

the problem is solved. no bugs...

#262633

I've had to repoint all of my Shortcut Desklets to its correct destinations after upgrading, then I had to rename every one of them, and had to reset the Shadow information for each one of them.

I recently had to do this all over again and when I close and re-opened AveDesk, all of my Labels were mislabelled with the EXE file names, which I obviously did not put. So I want the label to be Winamp, it resets itself to winamp.exe and adds a sublabel by itself out of nowhere.

Does anyone know what is causing this and how do I stop it from happening because it's a waste of my time to have to go through twenty or so icons and do a repetitious task over and over only to see I have to do it all over again. I was using AveDesk 1.1 before deciding to upgrade to 1.2, which seemed to consume less memory. But if I can't find a solution I'm going to have to figure something out myself................... ...... ...

Thanks.

Hi Ave,

Desc: When I save a document from any MS Office 2003 software (excel, word), on the desktop, AveDesk scrash (I'm using desktop grabber)

Item involving: DesktopGranner or PidlShortcut?

Your Machine specs (OS, CPU, anything you think is relevant): WinXP SP2, using the included Desktop Grabber from AveDesk 1.2 package

Steps to reproduce it:

Install dektop grabber

Save a word document on the desktop

See the crash (Desktopmodule.dll in Avedesk.exe, access violation 0xC0000005)

Approach: Office locks the files curently openned, you can only access it read-only, you can not send it via MSN... Maybe DesktopGrabber try to access the file and so craches...

Thx Ave ;) see you on MSN if you need more info

#263814

Short description: One of my Sysstats configs not saving on exit

Item involving: SysStats v2.5.2 (or whatever the most recent version is), Timezone2 config for SysStats

Your Machine specs (OS, CPU, anything you think is relevant): Windows XP Pro SP2, P4 3.0 ghz, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256 MB video card, 1024 MB RAM

Steps to reproduce it: I have Avedesk 1.2 running with 2 instances of Sysstats. One is running the miniWeather config, and the other is running the Timezone2 config (specifically the New York.ini, but this problem happens with all 6 files.) When I exit Avedesk and reload it, the Timezone2 config isn't loaded...it's just a generic SysStats config, blue question mark and all. I have to load that config every time I start the program, and it's a pain to do.

Quick edit: Just wanted to add, I save the theme every time I exit too. Still no luck.
