Now to your first assignment,
What makes the planets liveavble in the project is the fact that humans colonized them and then terraformed them, which means they created life on a planet. How by creating an ozone layer and then an atmosphere once that done, they could plant thousands of trees and so on and so on until the air is breathable.
You mission, if you accept it, is to find as much information as possible on Terraforming. I wanna know how they would do it, with what, what would occur, what would they need and so on. This is something that has not been tried yet but is talked about. If there are informations missing, we can then discuss and see with what you will find how we can fill the empty holes.
What i suggest, you google for terraforming, you create a bookmark folder like terraforming or dominion and you take as many informative pages as you can.
Now i don't want to have all these bookmarks e-mailed to me...i'd like you guys to sum up the important facts and post them. If you need more informations tell me.
If you don't like the research subject, tell me too, i'll see if i can give you another one..

@ Magnolium : Terra forming, from what I have watched from ANimes, is something that take years.
First of all, an atmosphere needs to be created, that is given the technology that humans can recreate ozone layer. The atmosphere is only something that stops things from drifting in from the outer space.
Next would be gravity, unless these guys wants to live in domes with articfical gravity control in-built into the structure.
Next would be making the air within the planet's atmosphere breatheable. Introducing co2 agent into the atmosphere and planting of trees, will introduce O2 back into the atmosphere.
After that, you need to introduce H2o onto the planets surface, so that what ever moisture evaporated will be in form of clouds. Using chemical agents, terraforming stations can create artificial rain, which in turn will nourish the plants.
Because terraforming is a big scale project, therefore the planet is divided into sectors, with each terraforming station controling the assigned sectors.
At least 10 years is needed to make a planet habitable, given the chance that humans have these technologies in : Creating gravity on a planet; warp engines that allows space shuttles to fly longer distance in a short amount of time; Stations that can 'hovers' over a planet's surface indefinately and able to fly around at will of the controller and most important of all, creating an ozone layer and atmosphere.
This is all I know on terraforming. Hope this helps. Feel free to correct anything that is wrong.

Don't know if you guys saw this... anyway, in the movie Total Recall, they melt the ice caps of Mars to get the atmosphere. Thought you might use something similar for your project.
@gamez : Yup, I saw that movie. I like futuristic movies and animes alike. However, if you use the same idea again, wouldn't players think : "it's been used before, try harder next time"
What I hope to bring in, is a new concept of terraforming, based on logic and reasoning, so that when gamers will know that " yah, that's possible. Maybe it won't happened in my time, but my decendants will be able to see it happen".
There's this Japanese director : Shirow Masamune, who created a lengend with 'Ghost In The Shell'. The movie depicts the future world, where cybernetic enhancements and cyborg bodies are common. The aim of the movie is to bring out a question " What makes humans different from machines if the latter can have a 'soul' too?"
Shirow Masamune created something that's possible, something that can happen and will happen in the distant future.
That's the feeling that I want to bring out to the gamers, so that when they play the game, they can immense themselves in the 'future world', believing what has happened is true, and thus, the more they want to explore what the distant future holds.
Other than the storyline itself, the BG music is important as well, to bring that 'atmoshpere' out to the gamers.

ok now my corrections,
the gravity on most planets will not be rectified to "fit" human needs. The colony will grow with it and that's what makes different human "races" A lower gravity than earth's will make the colony's second generation much taller than normal humans...they will also be weaker...
A high gravity will do the opposite, shorter and stronger....this is gonna create different races with different caracteristics.
and a small correction, i think that with our present technology, it would take 100 years to terraform a planet the size of Mars.
But as time goes, it will take less time and in 600 years it should take approximately 20years.
Melting the ice Would have been a good idea but has been used, plus on some planet the ice is underground or the planet is entirely covered by ice.
Thus, they can transform the ice into water and mine for ice which would build ice industry and from the heat and the engines it would create co2 which is good to thicken an ozone layer.
Now, what i wanna know is this: "Stations that can 'hovers' over a planet's surface indefinately and able to fly around at will of the controller "

Also, about transportation means, don't worry about it, it will be discussed in my next research subject!

hey guys, i am sorry to say but i am going away for a three-day out-of-town holiday. :shy: cos i desperately need a break in between the summer work and my master study (16th). i know it doesn't sound very good to leave at this time, especially after the forming of our team and everybody's been contributing a lot. i feel ashamed, yet i cannot not go because i am really tired after working for a month and a half straight after ba graduation. i feel like i have not stopped working since last sept. :rant: so i hope u guys can understand this, i need this break (a hell of a lot), before i do too much brain damage to myself... kekekke.... ![]()

Terraforming stations 'sits' high up in the planet's atmosphere to monitor the changes going on within their sector.
When a 'zone' in their given sector needs attention on terraforming issues, these stations fly over to do it.
As for the technology, I have mentioned that given all those conditions in technology, terraforming a planet would only take 10 years and not with the present condition of our technology.
This is my suggestion.

To Rain, i've read on terraforming and learnt with the present technology that it would take 100 years to terraform Mars so that's why i calculated that in 600 years its gonna take about 10 years or less to terraform a large volcanic moon.
Also, would you happen to have a picture of those Terraforming Stations, it really sounds interesting. It would have to look pretty realistic though. What i mean is if the station is 200km wide and hovering over the planet...its unrealistic but if its approx the size of a zeppelin then it sounds cool...Tell me more details about how they work and stuff and please show me a pic if you have one...
To all, would it be possible to terraform a planet but the consrant weather and season on it would be a snowy winter???
The stations could be anything from 20 - 40 km wide, housing maintenance, food, water, a dock (garage), dorms, recreation room and a control tower. In Short, it's like a small floating island, something like the size of Singapore, which is 40 km wide.
The dock is used for supply ships from outerspace to transfer stores onto the island., whereasa the control tower monitors the following :
1. Temperature of the planet's surface and atmosphere.
2. Humidity.
3. Atmospheric pressure.
4. Wind conditions.
Basically, it's like a weather station, but with the added ability to change the weather to suit the circumstances.
If you want a planet that's in constant winter condition, it can only mean one thing, that planet has got to have lotsa 'moisture' in form of ice and clouds or thick dust particles to block out sunrays.
I have not experienced winter conditions in Asia, so I'm not sure. But I know what will happen if a 40 km wide asteroid crashes into Earth. It will rake up enough dust particles that can block the sunrays for thousands of years, enough for Earth to be reverted back to Ice age during that period.
If you can create an atmoshpere, with maybe ice caps as base, then crash a big asteroid onto the planet, rake up enough dirt and dust, it will always be winter land. Using the method of seasonal changes to make the planet a constant winter land would require a huge amount of energy and water. Therefore, water must exists on the planet in a considerable amount before you can crash the rock. ![]()
i really love the control stations and am seriously thinking into incorporating it in the project but the thing is, i'd like it to be much smaller...
whereas something like the size of a football field or smaller...
when it gets too big, the way to make it hover constantly in the air becomes fictional and even though the game is 600 years from now, it has to look real...no anti gravity super warp something.
what do you guys think??
The smallest size you can cut it to is 20 km. Please bear in mind other than the dorms, garage, warehouse (mechanical and none mechanical), repair bay, recreation room; there will be lotsa weather and terra-forming equipments on it as well. And terra-forming a planet, even though it is divided into sectors, all you can see from outerspace is a speck of dust. Furthermore, terraforming equipments for a planet is going to be big.
You can take a look at Singapore on the world map. and see how small a dot Singapore is represented on a map, that is 40 km wide.

how can you make a 20km wide heavy base hover over the planet's surface???
It would have to be a space station for that to be possible and if that was the case then only one would be useful because of gyropositionning (GPS)...

Every planet has got it's own gravity, in varying degrees. Therefore, with equal amount of magnetic replusion would enable it to 'float' in the sky.
If there's any terra forming to be done on the ground, that would be last and final stage.
Reasons being:
1. The air is still not suitable for humans to live in.
2. A base being wheel-based, despite being mobile is still no as efficient in covering distance as in over the sky.
3. Terraforming crew needs a place to live in and to relax.
4. Terra forming equipments and food stores need to have storage place.
In short, if you want a a land based terraforming station, with mobility (wheels or tracks), housing equipments, crew dorm and Dock, you can imagine how big and slow it will move over terrain.
It's true that you have smaller stations in the air, but why make 2 things when you can do it with one?
If you can accomplish the same thing with a floating station, with greatly added mobility, I find that that's more efficient., since terrain terra forming is only done in the final stages.
I think I have suggested enough. In the end, it's up to you. What I have suggested is based on logic , reasoning and efficiency.

@ mag - theoratically, co2 won't thicken an ozone layer as ozone is really three oxygen particles. what the co2 does is act as a blanket to keep sunlight and heat in the atmosphere, which creates the greenhouse effect.
the planet's amount of gravity is affected by its size. the bigger the planet, the greater the force of gravity. gravity is also affected by the height. for example, if you are standing on a mountain, the force of gravity acting on you is greater than the force of gravity that would be acting on you when you stand at sea level.
@ rain - using magnetic repulsion to make the base "float" in the sky is a good idea! but the problem is whether or not the asteroid has a magnetic field, or else we could use electromagnets. but they'd have to be realy strong.

ok this is all interesting but once a colony arrives on a planet, the don't arrive into that giant terraforming center, they have to build a settlement first then build it or so... This means a station on the ground for food storage, crew and stuff would also be logical, reducing the size of that station.
Plus, the project is based 600 years from now but i expressively don't want any warp speed things nor any teleportation things. Same as those on screen super easy maneuvering space ships. or Cryogenic travelling. It is a very dark, industrial world where almost everything is mechanical that's why a 40 km large all in one terraforming station is hard to integrate into the project. But, with a smaller size, and a smaller crew, i mean it doesn't take that much people to run that, scientists, engineers and freight and engine crew members..
So, they arrive on the planet, settle in, build co2 stations, build some stuff and get some shuttles from space stations and develop the terraforming center.
now about the hovering thing, if its eletro magnetic, and i am wearing alot of metal on myself and pass right under the station, what would happen??

Base on what you have said;
1. What type of transport did they arrive in? A space shuttle without warp engine?
2. If it's a space shuttle without warp engine, then what is human race doing all the while in these 600 years?
3. If these people build a station, where did they get iron or steel from? From the planet, in ready steel pipes and sheets form?
Using the Hohmann's theory, it takes 259 days to arrive in Mars, with all precise calculation required.
Does that mean that a shipment of steel pipes and frames and sheets will arrive on Mars every 454 days, from Earth?
The most logical way, imho, is these colonists arrived on Mars. Having nothing much of building materials, they used the Shuttle as a base. As time goes by, their technology advanced and they managed to expand the base, slowly and gradually, by a combination of rocks and steel to form harder building materials which can stand the erosion of the wind storm that's frequent on Mars, at the very begining; until efficient Iron ore Extraction means is discovered
If you are talking about terra forming Mars, right from scratch, then there shouldn't be any Aerial terra forming stations. Why? Because these guys came to Mars with nothing, no Iron ore cache, no iron ore refinery plant as such.
Therefore, I think I have suggested enough. I will leave the rest of the discussion to livecn and tek. I hope you, Magnolium can come up with a a more realistic storyline than what you have now on hand.

Ok, the first colony arrived on Mars in 2044, it took them approximately 9 months of travelling. They settled in with their shuttle as a based then built up more bases because of a constant relay on ORS2 a space station orbiting around Mars. They terraformed Mars in 100years. Without any hovering terraforming stations.
Then "they" moved on to terraform Jupiter's 4 main moons. Thats about when they used propergon or propergern an evolution of propergol (solid kind of gasoline used for space shuttles) the propergon is a liquid combustive drivative of the propergol which is made of h2o and o2. Propergern is its evolution, a gaz combustive which can be compressed without heating up proportionnally to its compression pressure. Now travelling to Jupiter would take less than a month.
As when they decided to terraform Jupiter's 4 main moons they already have established 2 more Space stations, one on Juno and one on Thebe, these 2 were serving as relays for the goods in between Mars and Jupiter's moons.
Why no warp speed, no teleportation no phaser that does it all, no cloaking devices, no terminators and stuff??? Because the 600 years were politically oriented towards conservativeness. All of that based on our world's evolution.. What used to create every major wars? Religion. What creates war now? Money. based on that fact and others. We are headed towards conservativeness. The slow down of evolution. It will gain speed but then again, because all parties were money based, a war will erupt and the one who comes out of it will restore a politcal climate based on feudalism.
