Well my first computer was a Macintosh Performa(circa 1996) I was like 6 at the time and it was really easy to use. It stayed as the great computer in our house for like 4 years until my brother bought a PC. I realised it was faster(well because it was 4 years ahead of the Mac) and I wanted one. A few weeks later I got a Windows comp. Within the 3 years of that experience I consider myself a good PC user, I learned Linux and learned how to program. At school I use Mac OS 9 and they are on old iMacs from 98-ish. They do not do very well so thats when the Mac-bashing started. I bashed Macs from 2001 to 2003. In the spring I finally reliased how nice they were, they are easy to use and as a PC user I am used to freezing and having to fix problems. I know there are problems with Macs but they are easier and dont happen every f***ing ten minutes. I bought some old system 7 macs on eBay to get some memories flashing back and well it inspired me to go out and buy an iPod. After a month of good old freelance web design I had 400$ to buy myself a 15GB iPod. I love it and it has inspired me to by an iPod. I now am saving up money to get a G5 and perhaps a Apple Flat Display. I want something different(Damn aren't I going by the standard Apple Trademark "Think Different"). I look forward to it and reliving a kickass computer, a kickass design and a kickass interface. I cant wait to become an Apple user again

you make me feel so old considering I've been using computers for the better part of 20 years!
my first 'proper' computer (i.e. one that was used for serious stuff rather than what's now considered a gaming console) was an IBM XT
just to add a chronology of my usage (for those that might find this interesting 
):
IBM XT
Early Acorn AT (you know when floppy disk were really floppy and foldable)
Tandon AT(10 MG harddrives and 8/16 colours... wow)
followed by a few other AT machines...
286 with 2MB RAM almost ran windows 3.0
Elonex 286 4MB RAM... the windows age had arrived
a few other 286s (SX 33Mhz/DX33/DX66/DX66-2)
then a few 486s... (if I remember correctly, the first with a fan on the CPU)
then Pentiums... (Just Pentium, then Pentium II and so on)

I think the answer to the age old question of Do I or Do I NOT plunk down $2500 for a mac( IMO you need at least that much to feel like you're not going back in time for an 800mhz processor) worth having may never have an answer. :nuts:
I have those months when I spend hours looking at apple's website strongly considering whether to pick up a Mac for my next upgrade largely in part to this website (Aqua-soft) and then my practical side takes over and the thought of having to plunk down that much for a computer that's not that upgradeable and then another $1k for the software i intend to use on it ( I do graphic work and Macromedia and Adobe don't come cheap) sobers me intensely.. :banging:
And I've got to say, It's cool having the best of both worlds. My XP machine fools most mac users from a distance and I still have the pleasure of using my programs with quite honestly, a pretty good mac style GUI.
I've settled for waiting for one of those rare moments of insanity where I make an impulse buy of a G4, or hopefully a G5 before my practical side catches wind of it.

It was aqua-soft and those Aqua apps that got me hooked on OS X. Then I started playing with the dock oon iMacs at london drugs.
Bought my eMac Oct 2002 and my 12" pbook Aug 2003.
I can't wait for my retail copy of panther to arrive. Then I will use my airport extreme card and panther to take over the world.

enough said. I'm going with PC. Sorry but $1200-$2500 hits my pocket like crazy and it doesn't give me more bucks. Just a bit better OS and nicer computer.
I use my (crap) computer for at least 4 hours a day, every day. And after years of become more and more enraged while using Windows and computers, I decided to start on my switch to Apple.
Firstly the look of Apple machines cannot be matched. No PC I've ever seen looks as good as any modern G4 Mac (or G5 Powermac). Apple seem to understand that while the speed, stability and function of a system is important, it would also be nice to have something pleasing to just and look at. They have achieved that and carry it through everything, including packaging and extra hardware.
Secondly, Mac OS X drew me in closer. With it's gorgeous looks and style, coupled with it's reputation of being a sturdy OS. People seem to actual enjoy using it for work and play instead of it simply being a by-product of wanting to get from A to B in your machine. Hell, sure it does not have the insane variety of Games but I can survive that. Any software I need is available for it (Macromedia Studio etc).
Thirdly and fourthly; I am a graphical designer with many years experience of using Fireworks (and recently MX 2004) and I have decided that any PC is not productive enough for me to jump into it being a Full-Time job. And since Apple machines are known to be better for graphical work, as well as being able to take a few beatings application wise, I was sold.
Now I'm counting down.. In under two weeks I'm going to be ordering a 1.6GHz G5, 20" Display, 12" iBook, iPod (10GB) and iSight. Yes, I am going to spent £4,500 on a new complete setup. Yes, I know I could buy a very good PC, but then it would still be a PC. And I know some people would say I'm spoiled (money is from my 18th) or just crazy (but of course!), but they have to remember that I haven't had any new hardware for over four years. I've made do with my crappy PC and it isn't enough for me to make a living anymore.

everything you said makes sense. I'm a creative director and graphic designer and I can tell you that I really love Macs as well from the same reasons you stated, however if my final choice comes down to paying $2000 more for better OS and good looks and everything else works pretty much the same on PC and MAC I need to think twice. I can basically buy 2 awesome PC workstations for one top of the line Mac. That means 2 more hands can work on my projects and I can make more money. Although I understand you completely and I'm getting ready financially to buy at least a nice dual G4 or G5 1.6 I have to say that not only it's gonna be a long road but it's gonna be a painful one as well when it comes to buying the software on both platforms.

It appears that the iBooks are a pretty good deal at around a grand. I'm picking one up this week from my local Apple store. I'm stoked that the iBooks now sport a G4 processor and Panther comes pre-installed.
.....and yeah, Aqua-Soft is partially responsible for my purchase.
I just ordered a G5,,,OMG I am STOKED.I made this decision largely from being involved and exposed to this site.I got the 1.8 GHz model---should be here in 4 or 5 daze.I am out of my mind with wonder,I have never gotten to use a Mac much but what I have done has been extremely interesting and far more intuitive to my thinking.I am considering selling my Windows Media Edition PC with 18 inch flat screen monitor.I don't know if I will get much sleep----I am on fire !!
I went to get my 15" PowerBook last weekend...but god damn, they weren't any. I went to both Apple Stores in my town and NONE! I was so pissed. I'll have to wait like 2 weeks or more before I can get mine.
I think I'm going nuts with all this waiting.
EDIT: now they say I'll have to wait 3-5 weeks and I have to backorder mine and place a deposit. I HATE APPLE!! I'm sending a hate mail to sjobs@apple.com and steve@mac.com.
I bought an iBook as well just recently. My first Mac. It should be here by next week. I have always been a fan of Apple ever since OSX was released. I really didn't get the motivation to buy one until I started to use skins and apps that were designed off of OSX thanks to Aqua-soft. It really helped me understand what I had been missing (aside from the money). I had been considering a laptop for quite awhile for school and all, but Aqua-soft and the apple emulation/skinning community definitely brought my decision towards an apple. The new iBooks were definitely what I needed. So you know where my vote is. I like this thread 
its great to have 2 mac stores near my place.
Seeing the people here ordering the macs and not being able to go and shop for one makes me :cry:
MacMall is like 5 blocks away (walking distance),
and Apple® store is a block from the beach (a 2 minute drive, 5 minutes cause of the babes on the way there)
Every god damn time I go to either one (twice an hour) somebody gets out with either a shopping cart of a G5 or a small cute iBook case as a toy. 99% of these people, while they exit the store, call somebody on their cell to bragg about their brand new mac purchase...
and people here need to wait like 2 weeks for their loved ones

Hopefully when income proves itself I'll PERMANENTLY dump my windows infected PC and move on with the real thing (G5), without the strive for perfection anymore. My eyes call for the 23" cinematic disaply as well.
As an artist, the mac would be my ultimate pro system.
