SearchSpy Spotlight clone.

I imagine how people can get a little paranoid, after all the app's name is Search SPY but the truth is it doesn't claim Internet access, it only wants local access on TCP port 4664, the adress is local:127.0.0.1.

Check it out for yourself. I had the same problem, it didn't return any results, but I had the firewall set to Block most so it didn't ask me. Thanks to you guys now I've enabled local access for it.

And you're wrong TheGent, GDS has a big text red option where it informs you it sends information to the Internet for "customizing your experience" purposes, BUT YOU CAN TURN THAT OPTION OFF! It never asked me to connect to the net, and it has no Internet access configured in my firewall. Check it out, it's a great app.

I can only speak for GDS users and say that SearchSpy does not ask for internet access but like Innova says it only wants access on local TCP port 4664.

I agree that you can stop GDS from accessing the internet- just disable the 'advanced features' and block it using your firewall. Also you may need to stop googledesktopmail asking for internet access by telling it not to index your gmail account.

This program is amazing...unforunately it only works for me when I have gds running. I just installed locate and I really like the small size of the program and the fact that it take up less resources, but searchspy doesn't bring up any results... any ideas why?

#350055

It seems as if I spoke too early. Even when using GDS I still get the same error messages when lcoking my computer- please see the screen shots below.

I get this problem also.

I have the exact same problem here. I'm using the one that came with Flyakite 3.0 which I asume is the same version.

#350056

Well, I got SearchSpy in Flyakite 3.0 and it worked fine at first. Then, after a few hours, the SearchSpy menu stopped working. I don't know what happened, I had Google Desktop installed, it just stopped finding any results at all. Searching inside the regular SearchSpy window worked, but nothing else did. Does anyone else have that problem?

It does not search. May this happen cause I refuse the prog to connnect to the internet with my zonealarm?

To get it right, I am not a flamer but I want a desktop search only and I don't like it to connect to the internet WHATSOEVER! =(

It should only index and search my hdd, what does it on the web?! Please help, I am looking for a good spotlight clone!

hmm.. for me it didnt ask for internet zone access, but trusted zone access. maybe set the "search spy.exe" to allow access to the trusted zone?

#350256

#350314

Hi everybody,

I also have the same problem (Call to OS function failed) whenever I try to lock the workstation or run the taskmanager via Ctrl-Alt-Del. If you need any additional system information to track down the error, let me know.

Nice application BTW ;)

Michael

#350341

Network is down.

Could not bind socket. Address and port are already in use."

#350401

does anyone know how to get the icon to the right of the time on the taskbar? or is it impossible? I know you can't do it directly with this app, but there must be someway of doing it.

#350419

Can´t all of you take some time to read the first post?

I´m traveling ans trying to relax. All issues people had will be answered in a few days, when I´ll be back home.

Please, STOP COMPLANING about questions that were not answered, cause I´ll answer everything after.

hi guys I had the same problem with u all. But now it's fixed. Know how????? Just let your computer idle for a while - around 10-15 mins, when the database is finished by the indxer, it will be able to launch the database then, and you can switch user and lock your computer without errors.... :P

#350933

Unfortunatly I use GDS and your soloution does not work for me. It seems that as long as the system tray menu is open I get this error.

Yes my friend you are right, the old problems came back...... still wondering why it is so.....from my piont of view, it might be the problem withh the indexer or locater. if it finished its first indexing progress after you switch on your system, the problems won't show up (the error dialogs). So hopefully, we can urge the indexer to index when the system starts up to avoi the problem. I am not sure, just a proposal.

Hope SpyGamer can be back soon from his vaction and find the way to fix it for us.;)

Anyway we will wait. Let's see.:):(:)

----------

One more question for SpyGamer, could you explain how does the indexer work? I mean I just started searchspymenu, but few mins later, the indexer will startup automatically. Or I used some founction to start it?

#351421

well i would like to know, is there a setting for like "always ontop" or like "never ontop?"

Ghostboy11

Not yet.

thanks but I still can not search from the bar-only from the larger window-why is this happening?

Try to let your computer idle for a few minutes before searching.

1) Is there any way to desaturate the colour of the SearchSpy Menu so that I can get a milk-like colour/look.

2) Also can you launch the search window from the menu? For example Shift+Return opens the search window with the results. Rather than having to click on "Show All". Possibly encompased by the already mentioned hot-key functionality.

3) While search spy cannot return chat/email results- is there any way to compare the full number of file results to the full number of all results returned next to the search box- and some way indicate that "There may be x-number of email/chat/other results" from this comparison. This may also link to a GDS search page that includes these results...

1. No, but it's a nice suggestion. You can try to edit the menu_config.xml manually, but the font will be still white.

2. No, nice idea...

3. Impossible. The results count comes from Google Desktop. It's sometimes wrong and there's nothing I can do about it.

Ähm, i'm sure someone has ask you before but is there a possibility for full language spport? Something like language.ini?

I thought about this idea while I was working on the app. But multiple languages suport is something that brings a lot of work to me. Plus most of the apps I ever saw with this feature are technically multi-language, but there are no language files!

Nice. Any way to show preview images of photos and movies in the main window?

Yeah, but it would be a lot of work. I personaly recomend http://xentient.com/products/thumbnails/ if you want it now. Works fine with searchspy.

is it possible to remove the shadow? and possibly changing the "SearchSpy" text

No, it's provided by the system. No, I'm still makin'up my mind about this feature...

Here we go again i fear with a good app that works for some and not for others and for the ones it wont work for we are doomed the spend the next few months asking questions and waiting for little or no help on this forum..is it all worth it i ask myself often.....and then come back for more !

When people spend months developing apps why dont they just spend a few hours writing a few instructions and tips and including it with the program, it would save us all a lot of time.

Why dont? May be cause I have a REAL life and want to enjoy it! I Spent 6 moths on this app and a help or a tutorial would be a pain. Imagine how could I keep it up-to-date for all releases...

As I said on the first post, I was traveling for a week. And I didn't want to answer these questions. Fell sorry if you can't let me travel and wait only a few days for answers.

My Spotlight Clone is similar to the others, what makes it easy. Many good apps don't have this kind of help, and I won't waste my time creating it. If somebody want's to help me creating the documentation, PM me ;)

It has no SpyWare. Let me explain...

After moths programing, SearchSpy was almost done and was announced at the FlyakiteOSX 3 development thread. But people started to complain. Many ones said that MacSearch was better just cause it does not use Google Desktop. I don't care wether is or not the best one, but people do :P

I didn't want to write everything I did again due to those requests. So I created a small app to index the hard disk and act as the Google Desktop LOCAL webserver. It acts as Google Desktop for the Spotlight apps, meaning that you can use any of them without GDS if you have SearchSpy.

Note that the webserver is safe and created to REFUSE conections from the web. You can try it by yourself, typyng http://127.0.0.1:4664/search?q=querryhere&num=10 on your browser and http://your_ip:4664/search?q=querryhere&num=10 on another computer. The second URL will provide a blank page and the first will provide the results.

@Everybody:

I want you to provide as much information as you can when reporting a bug. This means that I want:

1. Your Computer specs.

2. Your OS

3. Screenshots

4. How to reproduce the bug

5. What were you running?

6. Does it work with Google Desktop?

7. Does it work without Google Desktop?

etc...

If you already reported an issue, please consider reporting it again with more information. It would Help a LOT.

Thanks and... I'm back :P

#351803

I am re-reporting the lock computer error.

Every time I lock the computer when the Searchspy menu is present in the taskbar I get 40+ error boxes as shown by the previous screenshots.

I am running Windows MCE 2005 on a P42.53ghz with 1gb ot RAM

This happens with both GDS and the local search client. This also seems to be a relatively common error as several people have also reported it.

If you need any more info please fell free to PM me.

Other than this the program works perfectly.

#351814

I had the same errors reported by aleph. I'm running winxpsp2 with flyakite osx3 on a hp nx6120 notebook 512Mb. No GDS installed. The "SearchSpyIndex.exe" never worked, so I used the files.dbs created by macsearch.

#351867

I personaly recomend http://xentient.com/products/thumbnails/ if you want it now. Works fine with searchspy.

Thanks for this great solution. I used to use it but totally forgot to reinstall when I reinstalled Windows. As a side note to this- is there any way icons size could be increased/specified in the main window so that these thumbnails are a little larger?

#351975

hm... I experienced another unusual behaviour:

When I search with the tray icon, everything is just fine, I get tons of results. But when I switch to "show all" in the windowed programm, I mostly get few or none results even if it shows that there were few hundred results: (view screeny for this bug)

bug0km.th.jpg

[i'm using SearchSpy together with GDS and let the system idle for few hours, rebooted a few times. Problem still present]

#352398

The first issue is fixed. After many hours debugging I finally found where the problem was. The program will no more crash when your computer enters on standby mode.

#353094

Awesome, this should be included in google search

#353256

Nice work...

Just one thing i was thinking about, and that is about tapping into the native index built into windows.

Currently all these spotlight clones use some external database created by an application of some sorts. None of them have been able to tap into the windows index. Now i don't know much about the depths of windows and coding and i shall not claim to, but if you query the database in XP by going into Administrative Tools, Computer Management, and in the tree on the left, Services and Applications, Indexing Service, System, Query the Catalog, then it is clear that there is a web based interface. Surely this could be exploited, therefore eliminating the need for google desktop. Hitting F1 to bring out the help, it is clear there are plenty of parameters to be set that people who know far more than me could use effectively. For example, one can query specific attributes such as artisit information in mp3s, or words in Word documents, with results generally more reliable than GDS, without the need for extra plugins. Also, if the service is stopped, there is an option to tune it to be more highly responsive to changes, so that the index is updated very regularly.

Sorry to bring this up if i isn't possible at all, or if it is an alternative that has been explored and dismissed already, but i thought it was worth mentioning just in case.

That trick is only for Win XP Pro, but it does work.
