Problems With Admins/mods...

I think the quiz would be neat, but would deter too many people. We WANT more people to post.

I do think we should come up with a nice FAQ though. Or maybe a wiki, where all members could contribute.

Would anyone be interested in a FAQ/WIKI?

Just show me what to do...

BTW, WTF is a wiki?

#89004

I like the idea of FAQ. I could do something for Samurize if needed.

#89008

I'm glad to see some good is coming from my post - I'd be willing to help in whatever way I after Tuesday (when finals are done!). Let me know.

#89049

I really doubt anyone would be willing to write a F.A.Q so till then no... :(

#89085

I'll write one.

But that's also why I suggested a wiki, as people can add to it over time easily.

My thumbs up to Contrasutra writing a FAQ, or WIKI (though, not sure what that is).

He seems to be versed in the ways of the boards more so than any others, maybe he can impart his tyrannical ways upon us through suggestive writing and/or reading of his FAQ.

:: waiting for Contrasutra to come behind and do his click the delete button ::

Another thing, though, is the rules that I hear so much about. I finally searched for the rules, a page with nothing but rules, and I couldn't find one. Then I saw that at the top of each forum are a few lines of what not to do, etc. THOSE are the rules?

Quite pitiful if you ask me.

I noticed in someone else's post earlier that most people just jump in to the forums and start posting, which means they don't read the extra crap at the top of the page, where the rules happen to be.

My suggestion? Make a rules page, with sections describing the rules for each kind of post (for example, in one section, have the rules for posting in the desktops thread).

I find it hilarious that the only mod who has suggested closing this thread is Contrasutra. How fitting, shall I say.

And a question for the man himself : Wouldn't all this be SPAM since it is all about the same thing, everyone ranting about admins/mods? It's just the same thing over and over and over.

(And in case you weren't quick enough to catch that, it's a joke with some half-truths in it.)

Interesting post i must say. I just spent the last 10 mins reading it along with another two posts.

This isnt a rant about mod post but more of a why post.

I just seen that once again the desktop thread for this month was closed due to certain people talking and not sticking to the rules. I find it kind of unfair to the rest of the community that we all get punished so to speak for what a few members have done. Would it not be better to inform the said members and ban them for a few days instead of closing an entire thread so that no member can post at all ?? It just comes accross that if one person is out of line that everyone then must suffer.

I got to thinking of a way to kind of get more control over the respect of this community and thought about a name and shame them page. Members that are out of line or are banned for a few days for one reason or another are named on that page along with a reason as to why. I admit pretty awful thing to do but who would ever want to get stuck on there knowing the shame it would bring them ??

On another thing thought and i am not attacking anyone or asking for a fight or arguement. But i just read the post by duckie about someone taking over his project. Now i agree that it gets quite frustraiting when u do alot of work and dont get appreciation from people but i find his remarks still out of hand. One minute hes asking people to take over this project and then the next bashing people and making stupid comments about all the members. The one thing that did put the icing on the cake though was when he himself mentioned that no one may be stepping up because of legal reasons but yet he still bashes.

Maybe im just the only one thinking that but for someone to take on his project and keep it running would honestly have to be stupid. The project is a replica of apples site and the legal crap that one person could land them self in alone just isnt worth the hassle and i think its outrages that a admin that knows apple could issue someone with cease to excist notice wants someone to take this over and then goes of because no one wants to step to the plate and then deal with apples legal team. Just curious though as to why another mod/admin hasnt come along and said something other than the thread itself being closed.

Maybe my post here is just a rant but im begining to spend less and less time here when it comes accross as if a admin/mod doesnt like something then they can do and say as they want without any reason to there actions. Like mentioned above in the post above u always see read the rules of the forums posted in threads but there actualy isnt a rules page only a few lines on each forum and lets face it people arent reading them so its obvious people dont realise what they are so isnt a proper rules section warranted here ?? Maybe since the main page is being redone it will be added ??

I just seen that once again the desktop thread for this month was closed due to certain people talking and not sticking to the rules.  I find it kind of unfair to the rest of the community that we all get punished so to speak for what a few members have done.  Would it not be better to inform the said members and ban them for a few days instead of closing an entire thread so that no member can post at all ??  It just comes accross that if one person is out of line that everyone then must suffer.

I can understand your disappointment that the desktop screenshots thread was closed again, and I'm sorry that I had to resort to that. The problem, however, is that it seems to be the only way some people learn. I have, however, banned the member at fault, and the thread will be reopened soon.

I know it's not necessarily fair to punish the masses for the mistakes of a small, vocal minority, but I'm afraid the point of me closing the thread was to evoke exactly this kind of emotion - people will be upset when the thread is closed, and so will go out of their way to stop it happening again.

I'll admit, I could have just deleted the offending posts, but then people would winge about their posts being deleted - this way, everyone learns from those that make a mistake.

Oh, and I have banned the offender for 3 days, and sent a lenghty explanation to him of what he did wrong.

With regards to your points about the rules, I can understand that people can't find the rules (I know I can't), and that's why I never tell people to read the rules. I think I speak for a good portion of the modding/admin staff here when I say that, on the whole, we just try to do what's best for the community as a whole. Yes, this may irritate some individual members, but, in the long run, it does the community good.

In most situations, it's not a case of "if one person is out of line, everyone must suffer" - it's just very rare exceptions where the "no chat in screenshots thread", of which everyone is made aware at the beginning of every screenshots thread, is repeatedly broken, by a multitude of people.

Wow, have you ever got a grudge. I love how all of your confrontational posts contain a line similar to "waits for contra to delete or edit my post".

I suggest you mature somewhat and bring that maturity into the forums, because many of your posts that attack Contra are laced with immature self-righteous content that says to me "I have a personal vendetta against Contra" instead of "Contra's doing a bad job, here's proof"

Now, mind you, in the section of that post where you AREN'T targetting him specifically, you bring up a good point, a dedicated FAQ or rules page would be a great idea, and provide something for mods/admins to link to when they say "Follow the rules"

Personally, I think that if Contra wrote up an FAQ it would be concise and to the point, hardly tyrannical (which seems to be a word you love to associate with him. To quote Domingo Montoya from Princess Bride: "I don't think that word means what you think it means.")

#89367

ok well I will jump in as well.

I have been around for quite awhile and have ,I think, added to the general good of the community. However I have now taken to lurking as I have asked a question in reply to posts or have commented on a post only to have said posts closed as a final word from a mod.

This is very annoying as it doesn't allow for A) the ability to have a question answered. and B) a member to discuss whatever the post is discussing if a mod can close a post in mid debate or discussion than I quite frankly will take care of the frustration that closed posts cause by just not commenting.

what rule was broken in this thread??

it often seems as though a mod will close a thread just to be the final word on a topic.

I didnt even know this thread existed. But I might as well add my two cents. Ive been here for a very short time and already have noticed that when I post and come back to that thread later on in the day my post is deleted and with no explanation......

Makes no sense to me.....and also alot of the mods here seem to have HUGE egos and think they are God....This is my first forum for themes and modding that I signed up for and if this is the way mods are I just might go back to lurking but I love to praise all the people for the hard work they do designing and modding and etc....

Oh well....just my opinion and Im sure it will be deleted anywhooooo..... :canadian:

There was already a thread about the frontpage redesign, so TheBigB could have asked in that pre-existing thread, where all the new frontpage stuff was already being discussed. I'm pretty sure that's why the new thread was closed, and besides, alot of the other people felt the thread was pointless too (check out some of the replies).

#89414

Hmm.. I could of sworn I disabled the ability to delete threads... so they were either moved to another public forum or the trash forum...

Only one person has the ability to delete posts or threads other than me...

True, but we common folk cannot see the Trash forum, so if someone moves a thread there, as far as we know, it may as well be deleted. :D

#89423

Well, as people may or may not have noticed, I've adopted the habit of tagging anything I close or move or whatever as follows:

[Action taken]

[Reason for action]

----------------

[user name]

This way, it shows quite clearly what I've been up to.

Also, if I "delete" threads (or rather, relegate them to the "Deleted" forum), I only do so at the request of the posters (or under special circumstances). Whenever I do "delete" threads, I make sure that I PM the person(s) affected, unless it was at their prior request, and explain exactly why, in as concise a manner as possible.

#89424

Quote :"There was already a thread about the frontpage redesign..."

Well I had no idea about the other topic but the point remains that a little information on why a topic is closed can avoid alot of crap.

I agree - that's why I've adopted the style above. It avoids a lot of confusion. I typically include (if I'm closing topics for reasons of "another topic exists") a link to whatever topic the user should have been posting in, and a suggestion to use search in future, along with a search link.

That way, I cover all the bases...

Unless anyone can think of anything I missed? -_-

#89430

StevieBM I have noticed your methods on closing a Topic and congradulate you on being through and concise.

I typically log on and then hit New Posts so it is possible that I could miss a double post.

as you can see from the linked post in my previous response had you been the one to close it I would have known exactly what was up and no issue would have been created through ignorance on my part to why topics are closed.

Thanks Again StevieBM {golf clap}

In the Alilm App forum I see the Tabber 0.1 thread was closed because a couple folks asked alilm about any pending updates...with the comment "stop bothering the developers".

I can see if someone writes in twice a day (or more) asking where a new release is, but in this case the thread's been around since July and people have suggested new features and asked if there was any news only a few times in the last 5 months...there's been no reply from alilm to any of the requests, yet he's working on email programs, safari clones, etc. which are much more complex projects.

In general, by letting a developer know we like the existing app, but he could make it even more functional (and better liked) with certain features added shows him that people are using it, and like it enough to take the time to make suggestions and ask if there's any update in the works. If we can't do that, the developer could simply think "well no one commented or asked about this app - so I guess either no one likes it or it does everything anyone could ever need - so no sense in putting out an update."

If the developer chooses not to answer the requests - as alilm has chosen in that thread - that's his right. I don't think the mods should have to act as the developer's shields unless the comments start to get abusive or too frequent and repetitive that they constitute spamming.

My 2 cents...don't agree??? :moon:

I think in a case like this, it would actually be BETTER if the thread gets closed since whenever the developer (Alilm in this case) has some news they can just start a new thread. Common sense says that if there has been no reply/news/development in 5 months to a project, it's probably dead in the water.

If you want to get in touch with a person who is doing something, a PM or email to that person is probably better than bumping a dead thread, especially if the developer is still active (albeit on other projects). If that person were to get enough PM's on that topic, encouraging or otherwise, it may be enough to spur on development or elicit a pronouncement of death.

Maybe it wouldn't happen that way, i dunno.

Ok to go off topic (well actually back on topic just in a different direction :P )

I just want to post about Duckie, Im sorry that I have to post this but I am new to Aqua Emulation I have always wanted to do this but didnt think possible till I found sites like this about 1-2 months ago.

Im now at the point where I go back through the forum and look at what has been discussed before I joined. I see alot of strict modding which I am happy to see in cases it shows the board is under control but there were quite a few that made me angry

Now I wont go into detail maybe just two examples

Case 1 - http://www.aqua-soft.org/board/index.php?s...opic=9054&st=60

"Assholes make programmers leave, so shut your "naughty word"ing holes."

Now this isnt the worst its just a quick example I dont think mods should reply this way they are thier to keep the peace not create it with swearing at members. Yes sometimes they deserve it :P but lets remeber we have alot of young members and I would consider "Assholes" a so called "naughty word" so why wasnt that blocked? I dont think things like **** off should be posted anyway it dosnt matter if the offending word is starred we still all know what it says! It just makes me angry to see words like this come from a mouth of authority.

Case 2 - http://www.aqua-soft.org/board/index.php?s...opic=9616&st=15

"and as for web-designing skills..., here is his webpage, http://www.geocities.com/blryah/"

This is the one that really steamed me and made me post this, I dont think Admin should insult members abilities. As TheBigB said he done the page when he was 7 and he is now only 12 and Admin are insulting him for poor web-designing skills. This cant be allowed surely! TheBigB is a very active member who I have noticed alot of he trys hard to help the Aqua community and I dont think insults like this are fair on him.

Now this aint a personal attack. The modding gets harsh somtimes but its always for reason and does the board good but some of Duckies posts are not constructive modding its just rude and unecessary. Duckie is a good mod that does alot for this board his recent post asking to take over his site show a fantastic site that could be used for real help to the community, I dont like to see Duckie let down by these senseless posts.

Sorry about the rant I needed to get that off my chest after the second case :(
