[release] RK Launcher 0.3 Beta

the memory usage is only high because of the minimizing...

I have to keep a snapshot of the entire window for doing the minimizing...

and that takes memory.

turn off minimizing and you'll see that it only takes up 6MB... at least on my comp and I have 5 docklets and about 10 more shortcuts...

That memory issue does not disturb be at all, I understand that one cannot achieve perfection in the fine art of "launching things" with only 6-7MB. :D

I'm eagerly waiting for that autohide/mouse activation feature though.

I love your Dock!! way to go!! :)

Hasn't been any nightly builds for a day or 2 now - would I be wrong to expect a 'proper' release very soon? The dock certainly seems ready for a new release..

how about just waiting quietly till raduking is done with what he feels is enough for 0.4 for a "proper" release at least we have the nightly to play with.

Also im sure raduking wants release the dock with both y'z and od docklets work without any huge problems. or at least with y'z working perfectly(if its not already)

#280964

I agree with d-shade we will see one when one is ready.

@raduking-dont worry about memory that is to be expected but if you could improve the cpu usage that would be great it ranks high in my taskmanager(could be because of the docklets I use.).

Hey, some people have a life, you know? Maybe he just need a little vacation. Maybe he's sick or something.

Isn't better to wail patiently and quietly - as we all do - until Raduking is ready for a new release, instead of making hasty assumptions and getting flamed for that? :slant:

Just wondering if you meant wait instead of wail. If so, interesting typo ;).

Yes I meant WAIT. Good point! You could say it was a "freudian slip" ;)

Hi all,

It's been awhile since I posted here, for life's real projects have taken me out-of-the-loop of my beloved Forum activites...

Anyways, after having been using YzDock0.83 for a while until after installing SP2, I was having issues with it, so I reluctenly switched to ObjectDock...and have been using now for 6-8 months...

But I did see this new Dock created by raduking, and have acouple of questions, if these have already been addressed please accept my apologies, for I really don't feel like surfing through the 200+ replies...lol

I have briefly reviewed that RKLauncher will utilize docklets from YzDock (completely understanding) that this 'very promising reviewed app' is still is its beta stages. I have D/L the Aero-type backgrounds that were designed/ported to work with YzDock, so these backgrounds should 'in theory' work fine with RKLauncher?

Also, I see that RKLaucher will support ObjectDock Docklets in future releases, but I currently utilize the ObjectDock 'ShowDesktop' docklet designed by AndreasV...

Is there a compatiable 'Show Desktop' docklet for YzDock that would/might/hopefully work with the present 0.3 version of RKLauncher? I went to Albeik's DockletX site, but did NOT see any type of 'ShowDesktop' docklet for YzDock?? (I swear that I was using one when utilizing YzDock!-lol)

I have not tried RKLauncher0.3 beta yet, but keep reading how nice and smooth it is, with lower memory usage then ObjectDock...

Thanks...

:D

Hey ho...

you really should give it a try. ;) I never liked OD, because for me it was to slow for effecient work. Yz Docklets are supported, but not completely (plz correct me, if I'm wrong).

You could also try the "nightly build 0.4 134" which I use since it's gone public and I'm just lovin' it.

I also have another background from Yz Dock and it just works fine ;)

So far..

#281962

I agree with Larsen2k4...skip the 0.3 beta and use the latest 0.4 build available...it imports Y'z dock backgrounds without any problems (at least the 4 or 5 I tried). I still use Yz because a couple features I like still aren't in RK (like the ability to drop objects on dock icons) and I don't use or remember there being a ShowDesktop docklet for Yz (but I could be wrong). RK is really looking promising...I can see myself switching from Yz in the not too distant future.

Hi Larson2k4,

Thanks for your reply and Ijust tried the 'nightly build 0.4 134' and must say that it looks nice, but at least of my Plll WinXP SP2 laptop, my memory useage was immediately @7.5k...Yikes, whereas my present ObjectDock 1.11 Build 517 (with 10 items-including ShowDesktop Docklet) runs @ average of 1-1.5k...

So I will continue to watch this thread and others and see how the next 0.4 version progresses,,,:)

#281983

Of course the memory usage is high! Did you tried to minimize a window to see there is a scale effect? Do you think that effect can be obtained with no memory usage?

Probably in the final version you can disable those minimizing effects and than the memory usage will decrease dramatically.

#281984

Yes I did see the 'minimize effect' in action and I must say it is quite nice...there obviously was a lot of thought and (of course) good code knowledge by the Developer...

No need to get 'defensive' dear member, as I for one can appreciate/image all the work and effort that goes into hours & hours of coding/testing...:)

This is a very promising app, and our collective community should be grateful that we atttact the quality of developers that we do...

I'm just documenting my experience with my initial 'getting comfotable with RKLauncher'...lol with 8 items in the dock (no docklets), and the 'Minimize to dock' feature unchecked, my memory went to 13k after 10 minutes of use.

I will continue to watch for further developments with a keen eye...

OD uses much more memory than is showed by the task manager.

if it show 1.5 k of memory, it could be probably around 15 or 20 k of memory.

ask raduking, he will tell you the same thing

As I don't have technical knowledge to fully understand the exact memory output displayed by various programs...and I realize that the WinXP Task Manager is not a 'detailed, exact accurate measurement...

Interesting as I just reviewed this from raduking on another thread:

"I tried out OD+ and I must say that I had such a bad impression that I uninstalled 20 minutes after plaing with it.

First of all it uses 20MB+ of memory and don't look at the default taskbar Mem Usage look at VM Size that's the real test on how much mem it uses...

it uses the SetProcessWorkingSetSize API function to give you the impression that is using very little memory...

in fact it only gets down your system performance. Same thing about magnification - takes 100% processor.."

As I said, it is a very promising app, and when it finally comes out of beta 0.4, I have it on my list of programs to seriously consider...:) I can't be without a Dock...lol

Interesting Indeed ****

As with just my system on and ObjectDock not applied/started:

My PF (page file showed around 155MB)

With ObjectDock started:

My PF (page file showed around 175MB)

raduking knows his stuff, and we all support him, and various colleagues who test his hard work so that our entire membership can enjoy a great, smooth running Dock...:)

The "Show Desktop" can be achieved by a link to: C:Dokuments and Settings*your name*Application DataMicrosoftInternet ExplorerQuick LaunchShowDesktop.scf

Hope that helps talking you into RKlauncher...;)

Excellent!...This is the command link that I was using with YzDock...Thank you all for being patient, as I now have a new Dock!

Yes indeed, the 0.4 134 Beta is really, really smooth, and feature full...I have utilized the 'Import YzBackground feature' and thus far the 3 Aero-type backgrounds work/look great! Being able to 'Browse' for icons (.png) is also nice...

Will be now really following this/these RKLauncher threads very closely...

Thanks again...:)

I read everything in the thread, I looked over the boards, I searched for information, but I still dont understand why RKL stopped development for the past 2 weeks. Not one beta, not one nightly release...

Anyone know why?

#284804

because raduking is working on a bigger jump release. a new release is going to be released this weekend i think. having too frequent tiny updates can be annoying so maybe raduking might be working on bigger jumps. maybe trying to fullfill all the requests or as many in one release i think.
