Hey, DJ. You havent e-mailed me back... I gotta goto school now though...

#255732

I have come up with some ideas for PXP. I will implement them soon. Optional dock(its own exe). This will make the shell smaller in size and a little faster. With the option to have a 3rd party dock load on startup of the shell. This will allow greater user control over the shell. I think you guys will like that idea. I will be on here in alittle while with some more info for you, right now I hvq gto go to the store.

#256020

sounds good. Thanks for including that feature request to have the dock optional. Being able to have our own dock load at startup is a great added bonus, and will surely help this app to become the desktop replacement it is destined to be.

#256115

I was already going to do that, DJ. Lol.

Great. I'm truely looking forward to this.

#256178

Is everyone gonna ignore me now since DJ is back? :(

#256304

I won't :) I hope that you guys will team up and work on your apps together.

This is looking really promising. I have just one question at the moment, as this is mentioned as an XP shell, is that something like Aston shell or Litestep?

I didn't think this is going to replace explorer.exe like the alternative shell replacements you mention.

@drfire: off course not. Glad DJ is back, but appriciate your efforts on this project just as much.

PantherXP will give the user the option to replace Explorer, or just run on top disabling the taskbar and desktop. This will all be controlled by a configuration wizard that will be included in PantherXP. The user will have control over what dock, finder, desktop, skin, and such to use. Of course PantherXP will come with its own Dock, Finder, Desktop, Skins and all. We are going to try to make this Shell as customizable as we can. We do have the user in mind.

#256345

That all sounds brilliant DJ. Customization of configuration is key, and we appreciate you going the extra mile to intergrate that into PantherXP. On a side note, Dr.Fire, your efforts are also duly noted, and as many have mentioned in this thread already, you and DJ should team up and make this great app a collaborative effort.

#256415

What kind of skinning engine will be used? Is it something that we are going to be able to use / manipulate without knowing how to code? Or are you going to be able to integrate WindowBlinds somehow - which would be superb...!

#256447

I am trying to get liceans to intergrate WindowsBlinds SDK. However, if I am not able to do that, I will use an XML based sinning engine. Something similiar to winamp. I am also going to code the Finder as its own EXE along with the dock. so the user will be able to just download the shell, and if they want the dock they can download it seperate. why include all that in the bundle when alot of people may not use it....so give them the op to choose what they want....i see that that will be the best way to go aout it.

I like this idea - breaking it down will mean each element will be stronger.

#257083

Not only will this make each element stronger, it will allow each developer to work on his own project...instead of each of us trying to intergrate our code with his code and such.... I do the desktop, he does the dock, that one does the finder, and soo on.....it will be much more orginized that way. I have a little problem though... . my software developement cd's are GONE>....my visual studio 6, my .net studio, and my borland studio...all gone...was lost in the move i guess...so I wil have to wait to get another copy of MS Visual Studio 6

hey DJ, its nice to see you back.

i have been in contact with dr fire over the past few weeks trying to come up with a plan of what to do and where to go with pantherXP... i like the idea of seperating it out, it will definately make it easier to work on components seperately.

if no one has taken dibs on the finder portion, i would like to head up this one...

what language would you suggest writting it in? i know vb.net and some c#... i would like to learn the gui side of c++ but dont know of any good resources.. any suggestions? what are you planning on rewriting pantherXP in?

do we have a running list of things that are going to go into pantherXP? like a desktop replacement, menubar, finder, dock, widgets?

also, if i do the finder portion, how will the skinning work into it? maybe i can just get the basics done and then hand it of to you to make it skinnable.

let me know what i can do to help the cause.

#257421

You are more then welcome to work on the finder bar...I plan to use a simple XML engine for skinning. I would also like to work on widgets to complete the look. I will continue to work on the doc, considering that the biggest portin that I completed before I left. I wrote the dock using GDI+/VB. It was ok magnifaction, but not the best it could be. I would like to work on it some more. I also will work on the user switching myself if no one else wants to tackle it. I suppose we will keep PantherXP in VB since DrFire is not familiar with any other langs.

#257562

Will you replace explorer with a finder like clone?

#257588

thats the part i plan on doing... not the finder bar (which i have no idea how to do) but the actual finder

#257669

anyone know how to get volume information in vb.net? like

c: - Local Drive

how to get the Local Drive part?

#257901

Gah-- I'm not on the right computer to tell you now, but Ill go to my Windows comp later and look it up for ya'.

#257999

I'm new to this forum, I've read over the whole thing and I'd love to help but my VB 6 skills are still in the beginner arena, I'm just now learning. I do however have a ton of MAC OSX icons I downloaded from the MAC site. I used windows blinds to skin my XP system and used several of the icons. If this would help let me know.I can't wait to see this when its all done.

#258386

We'll see if we can have you doing something for us. Do you do anything else, like web or graphic design at all?

#258492

I've made a couple of home pages using frontpage they came out O.K. I don't know anything about graphic design. I'll try anything once though.
