Pantherxp - Mac Os X 10.3 Panther Windows Xp Shell

Hello. If you read the title of this topic, you know what this post is about. Me and several other people are designing a Windows XP shell that gives you the GUI and functionality of Mac OS X 10.3 Panther. This is open-source of course, because this thread is asking for people who wish to join us in making our program faster, and helping design the rest of it which is not completed yet. If you wish to help us, e-mail drfire@gmail.com. The official website for PantherXP is at www.pantherxp.dr-fire.org. Pleas help us. I have included the source of what I have done so far on the project. Thankyou.

Update:

Monday, November 8th, 2004:

Well our new "head programmer" DJ Williams has informed me of some new things he has done on PantherXP.

-

Some of the things he has told me are as follows:

MultiUser support - You can create can create new users, each user has their own settings, profile, icon, theme profile

scripting,

you can script the Dock and Finder.

-

Encryption - All profiles, settings files, and PantherXP system files.

-

Plugins - Users can create plugins, and use a script to control it in PantherXP.

Stay tuned for more news. Some more should develop quite soon.

-

-------------------------------------------

Also for those who don't know, the dock DOES have magnification now.

Also, we plan on making skinning capabilities in an effort to keep from getting the Cease and Desist.

UPDATE!!!!

(11/9/04)

Very good news!

-

We have been in contact with the Apple's legal team. They have granted us permission to continue the project as long as we make it skinnable and not have the default skin be Panther. Also we HAVE to keep it open-source.

#210230

Coded in VB too! This could be a great app if you guys finish it.

#210234

Oh yea, I forgot to mention, its in Visual Basic 6.0!

#210236

Whilst this is a very amicable conception, drfire, I can't see your project lasting overlong, primarily because, if you reach any semblance of size, Apple will hit you with a Cease & Desist order - unlike lots of skins, you're trying to directly replicate their UI and system in your application, whereas skins just provide the look of Aqua.

That said, good luck to you, just don't be surprised if Apple's lawyers come a-knockin' one day...

#210297

Well, I know that already. Will they give me a warning? Lol.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yeah - the warning will be the cease and desist order. After you get that, you get sued

#210300

I know there is a loophole in the laws somewhere, it all depends on how you go about it. If you make the app act like OSX but dont make it look like it, and then make it skinnable, and have someone else make a skin for it, then that may be a workaround.

Thats pretty much they way alot of apps are surviving. If you flat out claim that its gonna emulate osx and all aspects of then yea ur gonna attract attention.

On a side note I'd love to be apart of the designing side of this, PM if ur interested.

#211773

Time out... I am assuming everyone has a VB6 compiler?!?!

edit:// HOLY ****! I just got the binaries and WOW. This shows the most promise.

#211854

this looks cool :)

#211933

dont give away ur address or u guys will be screwed... anyway, in the dock, may I suggest using good-quality PNGs rather than those... Crappy bitmaps ir GIFs or whatever they are?

-SUGGESTIONS-

- Font smoothing

- LucidaGrande font or OBfont

- Tiger instead of panther, or when it's done, downloaderable updates to change it from panther to tiger (or whater)

PS: Is this an actual windows-based OS? Or just an app that runs on top of windows?

C:/DOS

C:/DOS/RUN

RUN/DOS/RUN :D

#218704

anyone have a compiled version? for those of us without VB 6.0? :(

or is there a way to compile in VS.NET

thanks!

#219035

@mmanson132: go to the official site in the downloads section

@C:/DOS/RUN: its just an app.

#219973

Lookin good - I've seen a few of these xp shells before (Seven by Alim for instance). May I recommend that if it runs over XP that you let the user use their own dock (y'z for instance) as it can run on top and would save alot of time trying to replicate what has already been done before - which would give you more time to concentrate on the finder part of Panther.

#219975

Wow, that's some nice coding work right there folks. Keep it up.

#220999

Well, anyone who was interested in PantherXP 0.3 should now be happy as we have begun work on 0.4. So far the dock does magnification as requested by many. We started a new code from scratch and it's coming together nicely. Keep checking www.pantherxp.dr-fire.org for updates and news!

Guys your doing great work.

I've longsince pleaded for an integrated sollution of OS x mimicing, both finderbar&dock in one app (prefably with as low as possible resource usage).

I thought smokescreen was striving for the same,

but since the developement of it remains shrouded in mystery I sincerely hope yours shall be easier to follow.

Whish y'all good luck

and shall be following the developement with great interest.

p.s.:

You mention developement of version 0.4, yet only version 0.2 is available on your website. Is version 0.3 available somewhere yet?

i think what's still missing on most docking programs is the animation when a window is minimized. i have only tried y'z dock and mobydock (and i prefer the latter). objectdock always screw up my system.

but yeah, heheh if you guys can make that cute animation, that would definitely make the whole docking a bit more rocking (yes i have no job and that one is lame).

#223808

What animation? The Genie effect? I'm not sure if that's possible... but then again, nothing is impossible.

#224004

well it's such a good thing that you made it open-source. if you get screwed by Apple (though it's best you dont), we still could update the soft:)

#224017

yea i meant that genie effect.

then again, me suggesting is probably useless cus it's probably like naming all the animation features of os x. you guys developers know best. kudos.

#224047

i think apple only bothers if the sotware is too successful. that is why apple never bothered pearpc because it's kinda...... slow (sorry to say) and it promotes apple. so i don't think that they will really do that.

#226506

Apple doesn't bother PearPC because it has nothing to do with Apple.

It's a PowerPC emulator that just happens to have support for an Apple product.

#226600

It also doesn't bother PearPC because in order to run it, you need a working copy of OS X. While some use pirated copies, other buy it and that's more revenues for Apple. As PearPC is nowhere near the actual speed of OS X, users tend to feel limited, and opt for something faster --> which leads to Apple computer sales.

If nothing, Apple is benefiting from PearPC.
