Only Serious Aqua-holics Need Apply...

I don't see any reason not to do a complete ground-up shell replacement.

It may be hard, but it'd be worth it, especially if we build a 3D-accelerated shell for Windows ;)

The more options we add, the more difficult this undertaking becomes. I say we release it, and let others figure out how to skin it.

That's what Apple did. ;)

You're just scared.

Trust me when I say that if we get a good enough coding team together, they'll be able to handle it.

Customisation is small fries if you can get the images/whatever rendering in the first place :P

Topic pinned.

This is important stuff right here.

well what do you have done already?

Being a group leader is realy no help towards the progect at all and is no diffrent from saying "hey guys someone should make another Y'z dock!!!!". Im shure that a very few devolpers run a deficit of ideas.

I would tend to disagree.

A good project manager does much more than jsut say "do this, do that" - they make coders' jobs much easier, so that they can do what they do best.

Great find GP, it looks like those text files contain just about everything. I will sift through it some and see what I can find.

The icon stuff will be no problem, hopefully more of the gui elements such as widgets and brushed and all that stuff could be found in there, which at first glance it seems like it should be.

As you said we will better split up who does what with that after we find out what we need.

Im on AIM if any of you guys need to contact me, just pm me and ill give you my screenie.

Some other useful terminal commands:

sudo find /System -name "*.rsrc" > ~/Desktop/system_resources.txt

sudo find /System -name "*.bundle" > ~/Desktop/system_bundles.txt

alo,

just a question... is the goal to start from scratch again or are you going to be building on the foundations of the .seven code already done?

I can code some REALBasic, if that's helpful -

I'm also pretty good in Photoshop. I consider myself king aqua maker :D

And of course I can take OS X screenshots LOL

Nobody seems to have noticed this - Would I be any help at all? I don't know much about finder shells and such, but I know I can makea Safari clone using IE, so making finder windows shouldn't be too much more difficult.

I can also test for Windows 2000 compatibilty, which nearly EVERY aqua-clone app tends to lack. Some people don't have XP (like me).

#118573

I dunno if REALBasic abilities will be helpful or not. Stevie would know.

As far as needing Photoshop help, I'll keep you posted. Right now it looks like we will be manipulating existing images, not making them from scratch.

I think it'd be best if we can stick to a core of one or maybe two languages, at most...

Personally, I would tend towards C#/C++, but I'm open to suggestions :)

Am I to assume, then, that I'm the unofficial lead programmer, if only by default? ;)

A good understanding of Windows/DirectX programming is a plus, too, as is a strong programming background.

not to be a d¡ck, but..

no. no one uses real basic. it's not a real language. it's worthless. give it up. i've read like 10 posts from you today ranting about realbasic, quit wasting your time posting about it and go learn a C variant.

again, not trying to be a jerk, just saying, realbasic is worthless. Why not tote "i know qbasic!"

Edit: to stay "on" topic..

http://www.bugzilla.org = free bug reporting software, better then any mailing list.

http://www.cvshome.org = CVS, free, share src code changing up-to-date with a group of people.

http://www.sourceforge.net = free website to host the project and downloads.

you guys = guys busting your ass to code it =P

Deleted = free, guy that does nothing but comments!

Bugzilla's good, but I find that it's a lil' bit clunky at times - the bug tracking system I've got does all that Bugzilla does, but just seems a little faster to use...

I think CVS would probably be the best source control option...

As for SourceForge, I dunno - I've never used it :)

i watched .seven rise and fall, so i'm hoping that you can really pull it off this time godpunk... :D

Well, sorry, but I don't have time to learn a "real" language. From what I've seen it takes a lot of time, around 3 or 4 months of reading books.

And I can do something with it, it's NOT worthless. For example, I recently built a program that prints eBay mailing labels and keeps a digital confirmation. I can also build a decent IE or Mozilla-based browser within a week or two's time.

BTW - It was nowhere near 10 posts, and it was not ranting.

As for staying on topic -

I got to thinking about it, and my programming wouldn't fit in with the other C-based software you guys are doing... I'll just start my own project.

Of course we do Stevie. :)

As for the GUI end, I just struck the motherlode!

-godpunk

I hope you guys follow through with it, this will be the second time this article will have helped the community...

Check it...

You could be missing some good resources by not including the:

/Applications

/Developer (in case you installed xcode)

/Library

directories.

From a PM I sent a while ago:

#118726

What Deleted is trying to say that it is not a language that RealBASIC wont be a good language to do a shell replacement, it lacks speed and "power". It might be fine and even easier to build small apps like the one you said.

I vote for Delphi! :6

#118729

I am pretty new to coding, but I know some c++ and I am willing to help in any way I can. I have access to a mac at my school, and its pretty much inlimited access, since I work on them for the InfoTech people. If I can't help with coding or anything, I'll still be here cheering you guys on. This is awesome, and I hope i can be involved in some helpful way.

Don't worry- this is not a rush job, and we will absolutely scour OS X for resources. We could even do a command to scan the entire disk for resources, but we are trying to keep the work in managable chunks for now.

As for what language we will use, once the programming team has been formed (Stevie is out recruiting, I think), they will need to decide what language(s) to use. That will probably be soon, once Stevie gets his dream team recruited.

I just finished re-installing OS X on my own system, getting rid of all customization I did to it, that way I could be sure that all the resources were perfect.

I see a lot more potential with this project this time around....I hope it continues, and that we can show people what a dedicated community can make together!

Some photoshop skills here, thats about it though. Im not too good at specific stuff, I have a couple icon programs I can work with to create little things like the buttons if need be.

I know alot about PC's and how they work as well as where to find stuff on them so give me a shout if you need help with that.

#118795

More good news on the GUI front...

With Contra's help in the UNIX command line, I extracted ALL the .icns, .png, .tiff, and .rsrc files from OS X's System Folder- between 800-900 files in all. This amounts to about 90-95% of the GUI elements. Files such as window elements (brushed metal, scrollbars, etc.) have not turned up yet, and they are probably in the .rsrc files, which have to be opened with ResEdit or Resourcer. If anyone can offer any help with extracting these elements, please do so.

I have compiled all the extracted GUI files into a .zip file, but I need someone to host it for me. It's about 8MB in size. Any help on hosting this important file would be appreciated as well. Thanks!

I'll host it

Thanks to Duckie, the GUI pack is now downloadable. Duckie was also gracious enough to convert the .icns files to .ico for us.

You can download the pack here. Please do not download this file unless you are serious about helping develop the GUI. No need to waste someone else's bandwidth.

ok, ive been away drinking the allagash ale at the bar, and lots has happened., this is good stuff.

Ok, so where do we stand now as far as resources from the mac that we need. I am pretty good and free tommorow to sift through all the stuff to find the things we need.

As near as I can tell all the icons have been pulled, and we are now just looking for the gui elements, is this correct?

How is it going on the programming front?

BAH, I wish we had a chat room on here sometimes
