Longhorn Leaked!

Because my therapist is a female?!?
Originally posted by alilm@Oct 27 2003, 11:30 PMYeah but you could kinda say that about 98 when XP was in beta. They looked pretty identical, but would you rather be using 98 now? If you would, please, please see a doctor.
It was really a question.
Apart from the looks, the great effects and some features that can be guessed viewing the screenshots ("filtered" view in explorer, cover art for audio files etc.), what are the most important new features of Longhorn, in short? Any links, maybe?
i'm liking what i'm seeing, could be worse.
BTW, eppla should consider sprucing up there UI(beginning
to look a little stale).
I downloaded and installed Longhorn on my computer this afternoon and have been using it most of this evening...gotta say I like it...so far... ![]()
longhorn is not bad, this build is actually pretty fast and stable after some tweaking.
Yep, stuck it on and it works.. well, mostly. For some reason Explorer keeps vanishing on me but that's nothing new
Once you get rid of the larger aspects of the interface (huge bands of crap) then it looks a lot better. Mobeydock works well in it, Y's stuff all complains that it's not XP and I haven't go around to trying OD or WinFX etc. yet, so we'll see.
Other than that it looks a lot better than the teletubby look, although if you really miss it you can still choose it. Gonna try Aquafying it later to see what happens.
Using LH now and it works fine I am working on Reshacking Dlls to make it Aqua lets see what happens ![]()
Also iTunes works on it
i think microsoft should just stop trying
its not like theres much new...to me it looks like a bloated gothic version of XP....oh well, back to the drawing board Micrsoft
What do you think about these new images of the "Aero" UI not featured in the Longhorn beta that was given out? It has what they call "glass windows" which is the transparent top bar...or something to that effect.

Click here for more "Aero" images.

Bye,
Nando
i gotta say, they're definitely using some nice colours, much better than xp.
Some of the stuff looks half decent, except for titlebars, and it looks like they're still presenting information repetitively and in a poor layout.
oooo... aero looks pretty cool.
Those Aero glass windows can already be implemented on Mac OS X right now.!
Somebody should create a little app that gives Aqua more of that kind of
transparency, just to show Microsoft. I'm sure Apple is not at all worried
when it comes to the new UI. If Aqua is what we have right now, just think
what Mac users will have 3 or 4 years into the future

I think you're slightly missing the point of the Avalon system - whilst Quartz (Extreme) is fully 3D accellerated, Avalon is vector based, and therefore much more scalable (both literally and in an abstract sense).
Oh, and Aero is a visual style, so what you've said is pretty much like saying "Aqua buttons can be implemented on WinXP right now"...
Also, it's wise for everyone to bear in mind that this is aimed at developers, not users, and as such the demos are showing what can potentially be done with the UI, not necessarily what will be done...
Anyone remember the early apple UI concepts? :6
lh is pretty kewl... if only i could give lh pdc 4051 the plex look... i have the msstyles file but i can't put it in. i like plex much more than slate...
OMG you poor souls are all lost!
Firstly 'slate' or 'sh*t' as some of you like to call it is definately NOT the way microsoft are heading.
This 'poo' couloured style was created for the sole purpose substituting areo in the PDC preview! (damn i wish i could remember where i read this!) This is because M$ is afraid of compeditors copying Aero.
Just like how nobody even knew of the existense of luna before its release. We won't see anything closely resembling the final look of longhorn until its release. And by the way, microsoft don't even completly know how it will look. It hasn't even been fully developed yet! So even if they think that they have nailed it and will use aero, it will still cahnge ALOT before its release.
Why would M$ make some crusty UI three years before release and decide to keep it for the final product? Comeon guys, think about this stuff. If you think that longhorn will use the slate theme, you are sadly mistaken. The only slight preview (which is will be subject to extreme change) that we can see now are in those videos, and those blue 'aero' pics. I suspect that if we have any prediction on how the final release will look, it will be MAYBE remotely similar to these pics.
So don't make any strong decisions that longhorn will be ugly and brown, because if you do you are incredibly stupid.
i don't think anyones taking it that seriously, though i don't think anyone though xp was a massive design appeal threat/massive step ahead anyways, international man of spymac title.
I'm sure Apple is not at all worriedwhen it comes to the new UI
That has to be the funiest thing I've ever heard......
You're sure Apple isn't worried?.....
Errrr......I think you mean Microsoft isn't worried considering that Apple has less than 4% market share.
Numbers don't lie.
This thread is so very very silly.... lh right now is for developers only thats why 4051 was released at PDC aka the Professional DEVELOPERS Conference.
The GUI wasnt the emphasis of any of the leaked builds yet and these are NOT supposed to be polished in any way. These are all pre beta aka alpha builds. You will get a better idea of what longhorn will be like when the first beta is released. Build 4051 is for developers thats why it was released at PDC aka the Professional DEVELOPERS Conference.
This is just a lh bash thread. It makes me angry just reading it. People arent looking at lh fairly. Criticizing it now is like watching a movie that only has story boards done and just a small part of the script.
Well, for those who don't have a copy of LH alpha, beta or whatever, we only have screenshots to look at.
I agree that LH will look waaay much different than it does now, but I can see that Microsoft tends to add more wasted space on the desktop.
Compare Win95/98 with XP Luna: Luna has thicker start menu & title bars, huge start menu, a sidebar with common tasks in every folder (yep, you can turn it off, but as a menu it would be a lot more helpful and space-saving).
LH now has a sidebar (or whatever it's called), much bigger titlebars and buttons for windows. A plain folder window has extra "wasted" space above the files.
Yeah, most of them may be customizable, but I would like to see an OS that (out of the box) takes care about ergonomics and user experience.
One thing to also note is that Microsoft is making some guesses on what hardware we will have by 2006. Higher resolution LCDs with high DPI may be common in 2006 so having these "larger" toolbars and such may not be that bad. Of course, space still shouldn't be wasted...but we'll have to see.
I think the sidebar may or may not exist by 2006. I'm sure it's mostly experimental right now...although it could change if they can come up with a lot of clever uses of it.
At any rate, there's so much speculation and guessing right now and that's all we can do now since it's so far away. I suspect we will see some of these enhancements in future WinXP service packs...this whole next gen Windows OS reminds me of the old days when Microsoft was touting Cairo as the next big thing. However, Cairo (as a brand new OS product) never did debut. Instead, the technologies behind it trickled into the existing operating systems. I still think MS will ship a new OS but I think we'll see some of the newer technologies before this new OS ships.
The side bar will become a lot more useful than people think. Sure its wasted space in an alpha build because no one is going to make a program that supports the sidebar for an alpha build. And yes, there will be some big changes in monitors by the time lh is released. Super high res. Also if the sidebar is too big for you people, you can always disable it and make it smaller and its not that hard. You can do it in 3 seconds. And im sure for all you people who complain about the size and spruced up version of the gui will most likely still have the feature like in xp where you can change everything to classic view.

But then, the whole point of Longhorn is that most of these technologies are completely unworkable without a ground-up rebuild of the OS.
As for the hardware, you're right, it won't be common by 2006 - it'll be common by this time next year. The first ultra-high res displays are already available (IBM's T221 is a prime example - 22.1" display, with a resolution of 3840x2400 - very close to what MS was saying would be the norm by 2006...).
Also, the sidebar is being designed with large, high res (like the monitor mentioned above), widescreen (not the monitor mentioned) monitors. It'll take up roughly half the "extra width" of your monitor, for a given height (comparing 4:3 to 16:9).
Semi-offtopic: I got my copy of Longhorn PDC in the post from MSDN today... Anyone else got a legal copy? ![]()

I read on Neowin and Acivewin (I think) that I can download it off MSDN Universal, but I currently don't have any extra machines around here and running it off Virtual PC doesn't sound all that appealing, or is it? Let us know!!!
