PantherXP is dying! Please Help!

I am a C++/C# developer, but I dont' have much experience in graphical-type stuff.

Please people, help this project. Thanks GWing_02 and Saladin.

Got word from Dr. Fire.

Well, we really aprreciate you help guys, but, what we have so far is coded in VisualBasic 6.0. so, unless you know VB6, knowing C++ isn't really gonna help much, sorry.

#277486

Sorry for neglection of posting here to let you all know what's going on. Timmy is right! We REALLY need help right now, with DJ gone. It's going a bit slow with lack of motivation seeing as it looks like everyone lost interest when DJ left... I WILL NOT let this project die, if I have the support and interest and motivation of everyone, and of course HELP!!!!

#277497

This project won't die.

It will live.

even though I am not working on the project, maybe someone should sign up for Google Groups. Find Visual Basic groups and become members of them. then post the help needed ads. google is a great place to find support and developers. hope someone is able to finish this project. good luck

Well, everyone. I started PantherXP up again about 3 weeks ago. I ran in to serious bugs and speed issues. So, several days ago I restarted the project from scratch, and have decided to keep everyone updated as I go along. I'm doing the desktop component right now. Currently, it has the translucent selection when you drag your mouse on the desktop, and it loads PNG icons from the icons folder. I perhaps will post a screen shot later. I really do need developers to help me out right now. I am serious about this project, more so than before. Please anyone, help.

#288027

Thank you so much.

#288068

not to sound evil or anything but wouldn't it be called TIGERXP now? hehehe

#288077

Lol... The name will remain PantherXP. It's the name I chose, and it's the name I'll stick with. But don't worry, if you want Tiger, you can just get a Tiger skin for PantherXP, as it will be fully skinnable. I have had some testers on what's done so far, they are very pleased. All has gone well.

I need help, please, anyone. Programming is the main thing in the project right now. It's just me coding currently. I have started a Visual Basic version of Flurry for Windows, but it was absolutely worthless. So, if anyone could code such a beautiful thing in Visual Basic, I'd appreciate it.

#288297

I have taken a screen shot of the PantherXP desktop component of me clicking and dragging the mouse, to display the translucent selection, as well as some of the icons which have been loaded. I have the Tiger default wallpaper in the picture, but it's not the default wallpaper for PantherXP, it's just to show you that you can change the wallpaper, and it's resized accordingly to your screen size.

I've made a Google Group for PantherXP. http://groups-beta.google.com/group/PantherXP

#288329

Well, it doesn't look like anyone cares :( anymore... I'll continue with the project anyway for the small amount of people who are still interested. I am very serious about the project at this point and have made some serious progress. Don't give up on the project, it's very much alive again!!!

Hey, don't wait just 4 hours for replies. Wait for a day or two, I'm sure you'll find some people. I'd help, but I can't code.

I agree with Pooky. If find that everyting has been said about the boards wishes for this ambitious project (finderbar, option to use own dock, desktop-replacement, OS X behavior, etc.).

There's been so much fuzz about this project.

Now's the time to get going with the programming, be sure to keep us informed with the updates to test and allow us to give feedback. Maybe a nightly build thread like with RKLauncher.

Good luck.

#288422

Ok, Wiebest. You're actually one of the people who inspired me to get with the program again. I saw your interest in another post, talking about it. I'll think about a night build thing, good idea. I was just hoping it was going to be like when I started the project; I post something and within 5 minutes I have 2 replies, it was the coolest thing. :D

#288452

Anyone going to help me out? The project won't die wether you help or not. I'd like some help though. You all know this isn't a one man project.

#288645

How many people are in the project?

#288658

One, me. :( Also, if anyone here is familiar with osx-e.com, there is now an entire section in the osx-e forums for PantherXP, as the owner of osx-e is interested in the project.

I would really like to participate PantherXP (and BTW I really like the idea of TigerXP). But:

1) I'm just a Delphi programmer (and a graphic designed a li'l bit)

2) I must really work on my degree and graduation work for about the next month

3) I visit A-S.org really unregularly (from a few times per day to one time per month or even more rarely).

4) I have a very bad English

Anyway, I like the idea of pure custom shell program instead of Explorer - that's what all of the Aqua-emulators need, I think. Working under Explorer, they have the system that is only painted like MacOS. Alternaive shell could really help do the emulators' things (like Finder Menu Bar feature, or Expose, or Dashboard, or Control Panel, or Desktop properties dialog ... well, need I continue?) - all those precious features, that are now made through some systray residents or plugins or boltons ... aahh, all that crap that makes my PC go down twice a day.

For god's sake Rimmer, as I've been pleading here, make your original Mcbar a plugin for XP's native taskbar, TLB and part of PantherXP.

Agreed. One app-fits-all is what we need. Never onderstoop why object desktop uses all these different apps to clutter the systray for one desktop experiance. Let's improve on that with PantherXP.

There are quite a few people on the PXP team, the problem here is: The amount of people that know/are good at VB coding is not that many at all. :(

Maybe switching to a more common language will do the trick, we could get alot more coders and some of us current people could begin learning that language.

That could get it back on track, right?

Ps. PXP directly modifyies the shell right? or does it just slap on another layer on top of windows?

i would hope the former, as many have already done the latter

#289220

I believe it would be easier to do the layer type; subclassing all of Windows would be a large pain in the ass. I'm not even aware of the programmers on the project, as DJ never informed me of them... I got someone who can make an excellent dock for us, I'm waiting to hear back from him from our last communication, but he's good. Also, I chose VB because I'm very good with it, and, it is one of the most common languages. I have C++ for dummies (lol).. But I look at C++ code, and I see it so pointless to write out 20 lines of code to make a damn window.. And as far as MFC goes... Gross..
