[release] Shell32 Tweak - Panther Drag/copy

I haven't seen any of the shell32.dll replacements that are available out there do this particular hack so I thought I would add it for anyone who wants it. My apologies if I am repeating work that has already been done. I've looked all around for it, but have not seen it before.

This is a resource tweak for the shell32.dll to change the drag and drop cursor to more closely emulate the Panther OS X drag and drop cursor.

****UPDATED May 18 1AM****

The previous problem with the lack of transparency has now been fixed. Thanks to Shaggo, Relativity_17, for their help in figuring out how to perfect the transparency problem. The files are now 32-bit bitmaps with true alpha-blending for an accurate recreation of the OS X drag/drop pointer. These 32-bit files did not work on my system for reasons that still elude me, so for anyone having the same problem I am having, there are also 8-bit versions with hard matting (non-alpha-blended transparency) that work almost as well. Use those only if the 32-bit do not work for you. Hopefully I am the only one with this odd problem. Regardless, the white box of the previous version is now irradicated. If you are serious into OS X emulation, I highly recommend you do this tweak.

This is a resource replacement so you will need resource hacker to get into the shell32.dll and replace bitmap resources 142 and 143. The attached image below demonstrates what this hack is meant to do.

This has been tested to work on XP SP1. Please be sure to always back up your shell32.dll before making any changes to it.

Thanks again to Shaggo and Relativity_17 for the transparency fixes

Awesome work.

Thanks a lot, Aviel.

#162140

great! ;) thanks for that!

#162187

I replace it with reshack, but is not working, am I doing something wrong?

[edit] is working now, thanks. I think I'm gonna experiment with magic pink for the white box thing, let see what's gonna happends. ;)

#162260

one can only wonder why this wasn't done earlier? thanks mate

Link on OSX-e.com seems to be dead now. Anyone willing to host this file?

Or e-mail it to me... Relativity_17[atH]otmail dot com

the magic pink doesn't work..... there must be a way to get rid of the white box.........maybe using a *.cur file? does anybody have an idea?

A .cur file would be great as you could replace the whole cursor in favor of the true OS X style, but how do you get the shell to call for this resource? I don't think its possible with res hacker.

Yeah, you're right. Not sure if their servers are getting jammed or what. Sorry about that.

EDIT: direct link to the file is back up for now

mmmm..... :(

#162366

Very nice!!! Thank you!!! :D

#162385

Thanks for the working link. Anyone have the PNG file for this graphic so we can try using a 32bit BMP file?

#162400

a completely other question: how did you get windows to use panther cursors by default?

I have a panther set too, but I did it using the "Mouse" control panel applet. I don't get any drag and drop effects at all, when I drag/copy I only see the black panther cursor with the shadow becoming intransparent! To make it a little clearer: the usually transparent shadow becomes to a thick, black border around the cursor. If I stop dragging (press ESC or whatever) the cursor and shadow returns to normal black panther.

pazl mentioned that in his very first post

#163069

I'll ask again. Does anyone have a PNG version of the images? I think I might know a way of making the box disappear, or at least, not be so apparentl

#163075

I have one that I made to create the cursor file.

I tried the bmp with a magic pink transparency, and afew other things. If you have an idea that could work, please let me know. That would be terrific. Thanks Relativity_17.

Here you go, I think you'll find this to be better than the white square. Admittingly, it still has problems, but hey, they aren't as noticable.

If someone will kindly post the arrow (PNG format please), I'll fix that one too.

what is this one like - can you show a screenshot before I start modifying files ;)

#163091

No. I can't, you'll just have to trust me that it looks better. :P

I can't figure out how to capture the cursor on a screenshot. But the rundown is that this looks the same as the preview in the first post, only the background is transparent this time, and the shadow looks like its grey, with 50% transparency or something like that.

Errr.... I just tried your version of the bitmap resource and it doesn't really work for me. There is no transparency achieved with this change. Instead of a white box, the box is now black, but with jagged gray shadows. I think the squared-off verion might be a better alternative. What method were you trying to use to get the transparency?

#163351

I think I got it: the graphic is devided in two parts. the upper part is the graphic and the lower part is the mask. everything black in the lower part becomes transparent when showed. Am I right? :woot:

Did you try this new version? Did the transparency work for you? It does not work for me.

#163368

I just edited the shortcut graphic and I'm going to reboot this minute... stay tuned...

#163374

I have tried with magik pink without success, maybe I did something wrong..........
