[question] About The Whole Tags Controversy
I must agree with Keith on this one, the latest forum topics in the frontpage does look crowded.
And as Daclothe said, i too, suggest a mechanism in which members need to attach the tag topic icon, that way, we will get the tags, we will not have the hassle of typing them in when soemone forgets, there are only certain tags to choose from, so you wont find stuff like [harmless Monkey bananas] as a topic title and it wont display in the latest forum posts.
Also, who uses the topic icon anyway? or better yet, who uses it right, i think emoticons there are useless...

Yes sir! I vote for replacing these icons with images saying release/help/wip and stuff + Timmie's idea with colours is very cool too. Mixing both of them would be a killer!

I love the idea of colours (ahem cough cough panther tags..... ) to denote different areas... it clears the title bar of [] and makes everything look pretty :orgy:

On a more serious note I don't like the color coding. I would forget which shade was which 
I say keep it the way it is, and if any change needs to take place then just remove some of the tagging requirements (such as announcement, off-topic, etc.) and just keep it to the bare minimum which includes, I think, only: [release], [request], [help]

I have no problem with tags but with the consistency.... I'm with Seph I like to see them consistent. If you look down a forum you see [Release] [RELEASE] (release) (Release) {Release} [Rel] It gets confusing I do think tagging is a good thing to have though...
But whatever the decision I think its needs to be on the posting screen as a form of Radio button (or something along those lines) so that when a person enters starts a topic a field asks what category the post goes under and automatically enters the tag therefore it would keep it consistent and tidy up the forums.
We really only need
[Release]
[Announce]
[Preview]
[Tutorial]
[Help]
[Chat]
and if you made it a compulsory field Seph could stop his campaign of Tags

i think it's good using tags, the forum is more "clean" and organized so a the search is verry fast :canadian:
i like the colors , or i say shorten the tags. i also know there is a mod (but its for ipb 1.3 so we will need a new one when 2 comes out) that lets you add icons for the title, you could make icons or just make [Release] etc. images . but i like the color ideas better
On the topic of tags, I think that Seph is doing a great job. (pats Seph on the back for a job well done)
However, IMHO, its better when mods edit the offending post (letting them know that the topic has been tagged along with a link to tag guidelines) rather than posting a new follow-up post? This way you don't think something valuable has been added to a thread when browsing only to find nothing

I have been tagging threads for some time now that are considered old. When i do that, i add the correction only to the initiating post (to make sure it is not bumped), however, when newcomers post their threads, they -most of the time- dont know about the tagging standards and are only waiting for their question to be answered, creating a post that bumps the thread to the top of the active topics creates an awareness among readers as well as -as it was its main purpose- directed towards the creator of the thread. I can understand it can become tiresome and redundant for those of us who are tag 1.1 compliant members (), but for what i have seen, topics are being tagged everytime more - i dont have to edit as many posts anymore- it looks as if it is working

I would only agree to tags if we can force people to use them (e.g. that separate screen people are talking about).
If we can, then sure, it would help things.
Colors would be good, but people would abuse them. Is there some way to let only the mods change the colors of the threads? If so, we could bold the ones we think are important (releases and such).
I think the best solution would be a drop-down box selecting which tag you want... Then it will ad [whatever] before the subject, and if they do not pick one javascript thing will pop up saying pick one...
