[question] About The Whole Tags Controversy

Hello Aqua-Softians!

I would like to get some feedback on this from you, the community.

I have realized that a lot of you are against this whole tagging the topics issue. However, you have to understand the reasons behind it

1.- It is still on the how to post guidelines on the top of each page, not following them will only give the appearance that we do not follow what we preach to users that have actuallly READ them as well as the guidelines.

2.- There were half of the threads tagged and half weren't when i started as a mod, consistency is one of the foundations of rule enforcement. the obvious choice was, all tagged (again, it is in the how to post guidelines)

3.- It is, as Stevie said, a lot easier for newsposters to spot releases and skim what shouldnt be ont eh news; But then again, they are not doing much newsposting anyway, only for the major releases.

If the tags need to be stopped, i will (its not like i would die without them as some of you think), but this has to be part of the rules, and obviously a better organizing method for naming of threads needs to be used. I will not stop tagging threads cause some people dislike it, or cause some people dont care. In all fairness, pleasing all 16000 members wont happen.

I would say this again, but Stevie said it to perfection

Contra - you can argue as much as you like against tagging threads, but it's a choice between that, completely renaming the threads, or having a forum full of gibberish titles. Of these, tagging is the fastest for us to do, and has the most impact for the time spent. Otherwise, we'd need to spend a good couple of minutes extra trying to re-word the title in such a way that people can find it again, but also so that it's more transparent what it's about. Not an easy task, I'm sure you'll agree.

Now, for the purpose of the thread...

Taking all that into consideration, something surely must be done to maintain a proper order in the naming of the titles. Trust me you would go crazy sooner or later if not. What do you propose as a titling aid in keepin ghte informative nature of titles?

I personally preffered the "tags" that appeared instead of the little icons next to the thread (where the pinned and closed icons are) .

If we come to an agreement, there will be no more discussions about it, lets come up with something that fits all.

That said, do not start flaming or bringing other issues into this discussion, i will delete the posts and close this thread in a splitsecond. Lets try to have a nice discussion about this as it affects us all.

Thank you all for reading.

And oh yeah, i think elephants are cool.

I vote the tags to be removed but then you'd be out of a job so I dunno...

EDIT2: I agree with your suggestion to make the tags appear next to the small icons.

#156531

i think i had said it in the other thread, i dont mean you or unbeliever, its the others that just post when they feel like it.

And im not asking "tags yes or no" - your answer is tags - no, please, give a solution instead.

#156533

Have tags instead of smilies. But then only for things like [release], [request] and *maybe* [help] & [bug report] threads. Anything else isn't "important" and can get away with being tagless. It'd be good if news posters could just get a list of tags with [release] tags and post them straight up.

Also, what do you guys suggest about the Topic TItling... How can we make people follow some kind of standard.. we need to avoid all these "help me please - i have a problem" threads, what do you think is better, that, or "[Help] I cant get firefox to load dhtml pages", for example...

I think a format for this sort of thing should be "[help]Firefox DHTML Page Load Problem" - tells you everything you need to know about the thread, and isn't unnecessarily verbose.

Hmm what a bout this

Have about 5 global [tags]

instead of having "[help] how do i do this?" but something like "how do i do this?"

Color coded links?

Tag = Red

Tag2 = Blue

Tag3 = Green

Tag4 = ..... so on and so on

#156748

To show what I mean

and of course those wont be the exact codes or tags they are meant for... just the idea of it.

#156754

Can you do that right now? Or is this another one of you "When or If IPB 2 comes out" scams -_- .

I like it. Question and Help should both be red, they are basically the same thing anyway.

We do have alot planned for when we upgrade the boards to the new version, I jsut have no idea what the heck is taking them so long to finish it lol. Was supposed to be out months ago.

The main problem with that is that it doesn't work for people who're colour blind.

Also, you need to have an inherent understanding of what the colours mean before you can understand the page's colouring.

Wait 'til I've finished my exams, and I'll come up with something... :P

:P colorblind people, or daltonic people as it is normally said, can see colors fine! :P they only have problems when colours that affect their daltonism type -usually red and green- overlapp eachother giving a mixed frequency that their eyes can't comprehend:smartass:

I think though that it would look clownish.. maybe have blue for only releases, or i dunno.... the best way is bring back the tag topic icons :D

#156815

I personally think the only tag should be (release) thats it

the (help), (question), (preview), (whatever) is something everyone can weed out themselves.. It doesnt cluster the boards.. I am a subscriber to several boards and this is the only one with tags.. And I never had a problem finding what I was looking for..

But my 2 cents dont mean squat..

#156823

ibanez, they are [] :P!

The tags arent for people that know how to find stuff... i know how to find stuff, i wouldn't need them, but most of the people here dont know how to find things.

yes but from a new comers point of view, if they see all these tags they are going to be so confused. Though it is basically common sense, but common sense is not so common

its not that they dont know how to find stuff, they dont try.. and tags cant help that.. read my signature..

theres a difference..

#156831

Yes, they dont try, at least this way, they get to choose easily where they go, and by the same token, by tagging threads they make us life easier by not having to read topic titles like "wallpaper" or things of that sort... now, would you know if "Wallpaper" in the icon forum means a release or not? ;)

Did you see the tags on the side? the tag post icons? those were perfect. We could make them a compulsory field at the time of making a thread, what do you think?

#156839

I think tags are necessary...

Yep :soccer:

well i can tell you people dont like tags... that doesnt make them bad, though...

i'd say just keep one tag or one specific way to denote a release thread. i'm of the opinion that a very large portion of the community are here just for the releases. i would guess that there are probably less that 100 or so people that are actively posting suggestions, ideas and general conversation on a regualar basis. the rest are trolls who are looking for releases and the 'where can i find the default osx wallpaper' crowd.

that being the case, i'd say to make it easier, just make the releases stand out somehow. if you tag everything, the release notification or special notice gets lost in the mix. so i guess i'm for special status for release threads, and if we can do it with a tag, then let's just tag that. otherwise we can color the thread link differently or something like that and get rid of tags alltogether (which would save seph, i mean the mods, lots of time).

the other thing i suggested in the other thread was to force pepole to choose a tag or whatever like the way deviantart does submissions before the thread gets posted.
