Finderx Preview

Couldn't resist but uping a version to you ppl with the Panther Window style window, so that you could see it - it still miss MUCH, but it has all of the very basic functions.

Wow, this is making very quick progress indeed.

Daxziz thank you so much for working on the program, there aren't too many people out there to develop something big like a shell.

I know this thread doesn't get as much visits as it did a couple of days ago but please keep us updated on the project.

Be assured at the very least I'll be reading the updates every day

Sometimes it can be hard to keep on working - especially at HUGE projects. I thank you for your warm backup Anyway let's just agree about that something very important were missing in the other release when we think at the Panther window.... right round corners... so here they are - it took a while to force the component to my will, but it succeded.

I finally got a solution to making the windows come to front, so that it won't be like the last "drawn" on screen will be the one making it to the front everytime.

Now I have to add it to the window routine(s) and hopefully the first release will be even better

I *think* that I'll set the first release out when I've made the following.

1) Added overlapping window support ( soon )

2) Made it possible to open the files in the Panther window with the correct program. This will probably be one of the few things I'll let windows handle.

I was bored and thought I would look through all the posts and found this. I assumed by its name it was ANOTHER Finder clone and decided that I would only follow one to save continuous d/ling etc etc...

... anyway I had no idea of the magnitude of this project. For a preview it works well and I love some of the features that seem to be appearing. I wish you all the best in this project and I will be watching this VERY closely from now on!

Thank you - since I'm sadly not familar with OS X at all, it's quite a task, and when I began this I had no idea that the shell wasn't named Finder as it was in Mac OS classic - that's why it's named this. Finder 10 or FinderX whatever ppl will call it in the future, I would be very happy if ppl would take a minute to tell others about it, I'm in no doubt that FinderX can become really big, I just have to devote enough time to it And sometimes lots of things will happen and sometimes there can go weeks before a new update will come - I'm a busy person with RL to look after too, as well as lots of education etc etc etc.

I'm never gonna charge money for FinderX since that would mean that I would have to support it, I would rather like ppl to help instead... not helping with the programming as it will probably remain close source, but help as in making a page for me ( like the one which is currently to find here ) but also that people will install the versions I produce and help other finding their ways in FinderX... giving support at a future board - helping with improving FinderX in all kind of ways.

I'm no Microsoft support, and I'll do what I can for NOT helping Microsoft with this project - how ? well rather easy I'll ask you all to only use stuff as Windows 2003 Server evaluation and then ask other persons which, like me, has a deep insight in Windows and can strip it to the core and only leave needed files - we can't distribute but we sure as hell can make a script which removes it... hard you may say, and surely is, but I'm kust gonna make FinderX work like Winblows did when it came - it acted like a DOS Shell. Now FinderX will become the shell and Windows ( the only needed components in the NT kernel and the dll files I need to call ( few )) will become it's Kernel.

This will help FinderX and will not support Microsoft with money.

Also it can be made so that FinderX has certain components avalible to programmers so applications are build to run at FinderX, and if FinderX not is running - heck the application just can't be run.... Win32 can of course be ran in FinderX but not vica versa.... but that's future .

Anyway we're different here all of us, and I'll never force ppl to do this, but I suggest that this is how you all do.

Anyway spread the name of FinderX - tell'em what it's gonna be and let's hope that FinderX can live long at user support, 'cause I won't always have time to update and support.

I've uploaded a new version with the new window code added. You still can't switch focus between 2 windows ( will come soon ) but as you might have seen last time the windows overruled the menus in the top - well now they don't - The last window you call will always be in front now.

And currently it'll not give up being that until next version or so

Hope you like it.. I think it gave the menu system a much more "complete" look.

Added function to open files... now I just need to add a way to browse folders.

And then I guess it's about time to make the system read from preference files and not some hardcoded stuff

Would anybody mind if FindeX is using the classic way when it comes to the System Folder ? So that we have a folder named Preferences, one name wallpaper and such ?

I've just added a routine which now checks for 3 folders which FinderX is gonna use much, the folders are Preferences, Themes and Wallpapers. Currently this means that FinderX is no longer using a hardcoded wallpaper since it supports READING of a preference file named "Desktop Settings.ini" ( ini will probably be replaced with .preference or .pref ( most likely the last )) and that file contains a variable which FinderX uses to load the wallpaper path from or completely disable wallpaper if the word "NONE" is found.

This means that it's actually possible to switch wallpaper in FinderX, if you write a new entry in this file.

If you've downloaded when you read this I recommend that you redownload. If it crashes don't worry - just fuzzle a little with the .ini file in the Preferences folder.

You CAN set your own wallpaper now, but not directly from within FinderX.

I'm working on the themes part - it sorta goes.. good, but well - there's problems :/

I hope that once I've made this work correct that people are willing to accept a "Theme Developer Release"

It will ship with a premade theme which can be altered or replaced and can be fully used in FinderX through a few edits in the pref's files.

Actually when FinderX loads it check for a theme file in the pref folder which holds the path to the right pref file which then is loaded into FinderX.
