Windows XP;

drag any folder to the very side of the screen and it becomes a toolbar.

why not create a folder of application (shortcuts to) and drag it to the side?... then you'll have a dock that uses virtually no system resources (compared to rklauncher, rocket dock etc).... good if you can live without those flashy animations, and have a slow computer.

That's because the qwerty layout was designed for two reasons: So it didn't jam (common letters weren't together), and typewriter salesmen could type typewritter without it jamming, so they kept it on a single row (and letters far apart). Also, qwerty does make for an easy password.

The main reason for this is there are numerous hidden files responsible for the proper operation of your computer located on your Desktop, in your Home folder, and in the root of the drive.

The root of the drive has, quite literally, the boot structure and kerneling for the OS and is critical to boot. Your home folder contains several preferences, as well as the listing of your trashcan.

This Palm keyboard I am typing on (Yes, I got a Palm T|X and a free Wireless Keyboard) for some reason has a useless start button that is also the Cmd button.

On both Windows and MacOS, the little folder icon in the title bar of Explorer or Finder (in the left corner on Win, next to the title on Mac) is a real folder icon. You can drag it away to move the folder, drop files on it, etc. everything you would do with a normal folder

Windows XP

to make a shortcut to a folder on the desktop, open any explorer window, navigate to the folder, and drag the folder icon on the top left of the window to the desktop. (similar to what dreadnaut said)

this is just one of many applications that are drag and drop aware, try dragging and dropping links from firefox's address bar directly into a conversation, or album art into itunes, or links not hyperlinked into the address bar.

its a shame notepad and ie7 don't have this ability, but paint does!

quick ways to jump around in windows explorer, type any of the % signs under 'system path variables' on this page into your windows address bar.

i wouldn't recommend changing any of the files in any of the folders it links to unless you know what you're doing.

Win+tab in xp will get you to scroll through the windows in the taskbar, could be useful coupled with the rightclick button on keyboards.

Quick navigation back and forward through most browsers and explorer using alt and direction keys.

windows games:

In Freecell:

try game -1 or -2

press ctrl+shift+f10 to get options to instantly win or lose

in solitaire:

hold down ctrl+alt+shift to draw one card in 3 card mode.

Drag a card onto another one in a legal move, then hit esc without letting go. The card should jump back to its place, click any other card on the board and see what happens.

in pinball:

to play with the mouse type in 'hidden test' after starting a new game

in minesweeper:

for firefox 2:

to make firefox seem to load faster, type in about:config into the address bar, right click anywhere and click new>integer. Call it 'nglayout.initialpaint.delay' without the quotes, and the value 0.

to actually make it load faster (does not work for anything close to dialup speed), type in the word 'pipe' after making the new integer, 3 results should show up. Double click the first and last to activate them, don't change the middle one unless you really feel like killing servers.

it's a unix thing and it's a bit annoying. hidden files are a good reason to learn the basics of terminal...

you can navigate to hidden directories from finder > go > go to folder and put the path there (~/movies/.porn)
