Ugh. I didn't like it too much. The fights were cool, but the in-between stuff was so boring. The dialog was corny, and they didn't actually SAY anything. They spoke not to convey meaning, but to establish mood. Ugh.

As I wrote elsewhere:

clcokwise, you've always ALWAYS been a weirdo. I never ever saw you go with the stream and not even by the slightest. Just to remind you, all agents and 'evil' crap there are white. The vast majority of the good guys and 'real' humans are black or 'mixed' and sometimes you see a white dude here and there.

Most Reviewers give it a 3.5 Stars out of 4, which means it is very entertaining, but most mention that the dialogue is poor, convoluted, and not well done. It is the action-shots that carry the movie not the substance of the story. It also sets itself up for another episode.

I saw the car clips of the movie trailers in a 24 in. Cinema Display and none of the cars touch the road but float. It means that practically all the special effects are electronic montages/layers or actors/stuntmen layered on-top of a 3-D wire model. Eitherway it should be entertaining but just like candy you are hungry for real food an hour after.

T-2 & T-3 effects may have been better executed with more realism. The computer effects were better integrated with the reality of the film. :order: If you like it, that is what counts.

no offence 2 anybody here, but its meant 2 be a MOVIE, if it was based 100% on real life it would loose its appeal. :angry: as for it being poor, how can anybody say the story line and dialog was poor, nobody has seen the whole thing, since only the first half has been released

this is my thoughts, im gonna wait for the final half before i lay judgement, but what i saw so far was pretty damd awsome.

I thought being the one meant that Neo has complete control over matter and energy - in short he can control reality.

So why does he do kung-fu? can't he just imagine all his opponents in a cage and there they will be.

Overall a good film i think, but slightly lacking in imagination in that respect i think.

Movies based on real life are also quite nice. For example, here's the rest of that above quote (a review I wrote for blizzle.com)

So here's a real review of "Better Luck Tomorrow."

"Better Luck Tomorrow" is an MTV-Films production. It seems that I really like MTV-films. They made "Election" a couple years ago, and now this. MTV has put a lot of crap on big screens and small screens over the years, but this effort is pretty fantastic. The movie does have some crappy pop-songs (and some good ones), but that is excusable, as long as MTV is funding creative endeavors like this. And the best part of the above is that the film is youth-centric. Yes... MTV is helped to create an intelligent and compelling and accurate portrait of youth culture.

Wow.

"Better Luck Tomorrow" starts out accurate, anyhow. We see Ben Manibag (Parry Shen) and his buddy Virgil Hu (Jason J. Tobin) laying in the sun. And then we find out that there is a dead body buried next to them. Then we cut back some months prior.

This is the accurate part. Ben and Virgil live in the suburbs. They have some friends. They go to school. They are Asian-American stereotypes. They get high-marks in school and participate in endless extra-curricular activities, all with the goal of getting into nice colleges.

They wear dorky shirts with collars. And they are really into electronics.

They get electronics by scamming the local big-box store. The film suggests, through Ben's narration, that they steal from the store not to make money (though they do make lots), but rather because of suburban bordem, though I'm not really sure that that is the case. Eventually the crimes they commit escalate, and Ben and Virgil (with friends Han and Daric) become very nasty criminals.

Meanwhile, Ben is in love with Stephanie, a female Asian-American overachiever.

That's the story of the film.

Writer/director Justin Lin is very talented. He shifts between dialog that illuminates the themes of his film and dialog that merely moves his plot forward quite seamlessly.

But even when Lin's characters are merely moving the plot along, the words they utter are so artfully constructed (if not self-aware) that the film is always compelling. No words are wasted: the film is only and hour and a half, but it feels very "full."

(side note: Matrix 2 sucks because the characters speak words not because they are trying to convey meaning, but because they want to establish mood and tone.)

Of course, Lin isn't above gimmickry - he uses an odd "word of the day" technique to indicate shifts of tone - but he is rarely heavy-handed.

Lin's direction is fine. He is smart enough to know that with a solid screenplay he doesn't have to be showy with his camera. I can't recall a single hand-held shot in the film. I recall only one "arty" shot in the entire film, and that came at the climax of the piece, and was fairly effective. For most of the film, Lin merely points and shoots.

Lin's plotting is unique. On some level his film fits into that "start out fine, but get in over your head" crime sub-genre (remember Al Pacino with his face shoved in a mountain of coke in "Scarface"?) That pattern happens here. But while in most of those films, the situation of the protagonist gets progressively worse, Ben's situation jumps around. We are never quite sure of how f***ed Ben is becoming. And by the end of the film, we aren't sure if his crimes have really hurt him all that much.

The film isn't perfect. I'm not sure why, exactly, Ben embraced a life of crime. I don't think it was a reaction to suburban bordem. There are repeated references to an article in Ben's high school paper written about him that seemed to play an important part in his descision making process, but I'm not sure I understand the importance of them.

Anyhow. The film is also very funny. Lin is a true talent: I imagine he will be among the top tier of the grade-Miramax filmmakers at some point.

Yes. The dark skinned people are enslaved by the white people. And it takes a white person to free them. That's the only way they can be freed. They can't just do it by themselves. All they can do is be superstitious, and say things like "Yessssss!!!!!!"
