Half-Life 2!

That's quite an example of how well the game is designed when it runs so well on high settings on modest machines compared to what's available now.

Hey, you think that's good? Word on the street is that they're using the Source engine to make Half-Life 3; it was designed to incorporate new technologies, so it will look just as awesome then as it does now. DirectX 15 anyone? :P

It was super stuttery and choppy until I read that tweakguides.com post. Thanks a bunch! My system isnt top of the line anymore at all (2.0 AMD, GeForce 4 MX 420, 512 MB RAM) but I can run it OK. Actually, it ****ing blows to tell the truth but im not going to go blow $100 on a new graphics card.

Yeah I've got a 2.53ghz o/c to 2.7ghz, with 1gig of PC3200 ram and a Radeon 9700 Pro. I have all the settings to the highest possible with 2X Antialiasing on and it runs almost like butter, and my rig is 2 years old.

actually thats pretty close to what i got (except for the ram.. only 512mb damn..)

are you running at 1280x1024 flyakite? i seriously hope its juz the memory holding it back.. max settings run ok, its just that the occasional sound stutters (see above post) are even more severe :slant:

#229763

I'm running it at 1280x960.

1280x1024 is technically an LCD resolution size. 1280x960 is an aspect ratio of 4:3, same as 800x600, 1024x768, and 1600x1200. 1280x1024 is an aspect ration of 5:4.

Either way though, yea I'm running it at basically that size. And memory does make a big difference. That's the entire purpose of memory. It's an extremely fast cache. To achieve the quality that Half-Life 2 is, the textures and audio they use is all very, very high quality. The more ram and especially the faster it is, the quicker Half-Life 2 is gonna be able to grab what it needs from memory bank.

#229765

whoohoo, that's why i got 1.5 gigs of them ram babies =)

#229812

Woo! Well I used the tweak guide link posted above and set my heapsize to half of my ram, and also turned off the mouse filter. Then I also bumped up anti-aliasing to 4X and it seems to run even slightly better than before, plus it looks even better due to the 4X antialiasing! WOO!

To all the above people who used the guide, keep a look out for his complete tweakguide on Half Life 2. When i say complete, those of you who are familiar with his work, knows he really does a good job at tweak guides. In the mean time i am waiting for His Windows XP Companion guide, 120 pages or so of tweaks apprently for windows Xp service pack 2 :).

A site for the bookmarks i think in my opinion ;)

Oh man...just got to Ravenholm. So scary...ugh! I had to stop playing.

"That's the tunnel to Ravenholm. We don't go there anymore."

As if that wasn't a good enough warning!

#230041

No kidding, that is one creepy level. I also had to stop playing it at one point, and turning all the lights on in my room didn't help either. Although it's also a damn cool level as well.

Is that Ravenholme? If so, I think I might have to skip it..hehe.

#230063

Yes, and that image is by far the least creepy that level gets. That image is extremely bright, whereas most of the level isn't like that at all. Good luck skipping it by the way... lol. Just turn your sound up so you can hear what's going on around you, also, turn the lights on, lol.

Yeah, turn the volume up; it helped me hear things coming

Reading your expereince/comments makes me itch.

I am using some Sennheiser HD 555 headphones. They are extremely high quality and have 3D sound reflectors so it sounds like stuff is next to you/behind you! It is some scary scary scary ****.

O.o If my laptop can run the Doom3 demo at highest settings do you think it'd be able to handle HL2 with medium settings at least?

More than certain. HL2 requires a lot less computing power than Doom 3 does; the Source engine is an awesome piece of work.

#230219

I've been playing HL2 most of the day. *twitches* I'm a little jittery...

#230236

half life is so good i want to scream like a girl!
