I like the design myself, but something that struck me about it in an eweek article: All the pics show wireless mice and keyboards. Once you hook up:

Scanner
Keyboard/Mouse
iPod
Phone/Ethernet Cable
Speakers
External Media
it's going to look alot uglier with a bunch of wires dangleing from it

if you're a normal person and you site facing a wall as opposed to it, you shouldn't have any problems with wires, as for mouse / keyboard, i think they come wireless.

yeah, i know, i'm just saying its got the option to go wireless (bluetooth/airtunes/internet) and i'd definitely go for that since it fits so well with the minimal design.
man, i'm so on the edge of getting one of these! i should really wait till the 2nd gen release, but i actually really like the looks of it (minus a couple of quibles). The more i look at it the more i like it :6 :canadian:
anyone know where they're sourcing the display panels? i can't find any real (non-apple) info anywhere... they're not the same panels as their new displays are they?

As already said, you can feed the wires through the hole in the stand so they remain nice and tidy.

That, my friend, is a very good point! But I'll put that down to Apple sitting on them too long and being "stuck" with the lower GPU because of the cramped space? Although I don't know if the Mobility 9700 is bigger/smaller/whatever. You can guarantee that they'll update it on the first revision.
And yes, as wireless as possible.

Not too good on the design front, overly expensive (again) for what is at best mediocre hardware and the whole white thing just doesn't do it for me. That bulk of plastic under the screen looks very ungainly and clumsy. hell, they could at least have added an iPud-style adjuster wheel to fill in some of the space. Shorter and deeper would have looked much better
I guess it'll wow the faithful though. :moon:
I think what people are failing to realize here is the design factor and what it means to the Apple line. If you would look at the inards (pictures on website) you may notice some very interesting things, the main form factor could very easy be incorperated with little modification to work inside iBook/Powerbooks. This was not just a one off design, the new iMac is really a testbed for other products, and by looking at the inside structures, it very much appears to be for a notebook based future. I am sure they are thinking of bringing the G5 Powerbook out very soon if the Imac heat tests well. Everyone has noticed that there over the last 6 months, that they brought the CPU speeds of the iBook and the Powerbooks to match each other very close in terms of speed, I doubt this was by accident. I bet the main purpose was to bring the iBook to run the fastest G4 Cpu and to move the Powerbook to the G5. This would give consumers a choice, to save $$$ they could buy the G4 iBook or the G4 eMac on its lower rung of line up and the G5 PowerMac, G5 Imac, and the G5 powerbook for its mid level and top of the rung of it's lineup. 2004 - 2005, Intersting times indeed.
to me, it's just a tablet pc from microsoft converted to mac. that's all. nothign new. if they reduced the bottom margin of the computer monitor/case/ thingy it would be very very very sexy. agree?

Except that it's two inches thick, the smallest model is a 17" screen and there is that large white area and a great big slit in the back to let the heat escape. I don't see them getting it in a normal powerbook anytime soon.
then add .25 inches to the thickness to compensate. same volume, but uglines solved! i woulden't mind about that.

would microsoft be sueing them for doing that? i wonder. that's a good idea. a mactablet
i woulden't mind about the 4 inch problem.
another idea is to lower the monitor to the center, so margins top and bottom are balanced. having same size and shape but adjusting the monitor's algliment might be a good idea.
i see what you are going at. the efforts of apple is enough. it's not like they could do it but dont. right? they just did that because they have no other choice.

Exactly, if Apple had half a chance of getting it out with 1" thickness and no thick "chin" they would have tried.
I think it a cool idea, it is Apple, they can do whatever they want and it will sell. Now, compared to the last iMac G4, i think this is a downgraded design. There is no pretty chrome, and i thought that Apple was steering away from the plastic/polymer design and gearing its design to the aluminum look (i.e. G5 Tower, Powerbook, iSight, new iPod design with grey touch pad) but hey whatever. It's apple, I think its a cool computer.
For those complaining about lack of computing power and graphix power, this computer was not made for the hardcore gamer/photoshop guru, thats what the tower is for. This is an all-in-one design made for the entry level macintosh user. Made to be easy to use the basic applications and then more. 
I say, Way To Go Apple! Another great release, now I'm just waiting for the Powerbook G5!

...too much money??? wtp, have you looked at the fugly winnie computers out on the market right now? Their price range can go above and beyond a couple thousand dollars, and they still look like crap >.< .
Hats off to apple for cramping a G5 into that space.
But, it doesn't do it for me, it just looks bland.
Guess it's like art, some like it others can't stand it.
I kinda like it.. haven't decided whether to hate the 'chin' or not. This concept's been around for a while though.. a few years ago I saw some junked all-in-one LCD-screen PCs, they weren't as pretty as this but weren't a whole lot bigger either.

hm. i would buy a g4 instead of a g5 still. if the price is riht, then i would buy it. compared to pcs, it's a bit more expensive still. but still cool.

Of course you can.
It's just a matter of slipping off the back cover and swapping the memory, as with pretty much any system.
well after looking at the pics for a long while, it's really started to grow one me. I don't even mind the "chin" that much anymore...the only thing would make me not want to get it is the GPU.
