nah, the choice is block the banner ad at the bottom and see the tool tips, or block the tool tips and click occassionally on the bottom ad. I choose the latter. I mean banner + tooltips is ridiculous.

i for 1 can't believe microsoft is advertising through those. I bet the company just puts those in to convince other companies that its a legitimate advertising method. Yeah, like i'm gonna buy anything through a tooltip  (or a banner for that matter).

timan should outsource to those companies in india that hire people to click ads.

Tinman I really like them, ads are something all of us will have to deal with and I hate popups but this is good. A friend of mine has a site, and he uses frontpage I was wondering if this will work with that and if so a link to learn about it. Thanks in advance

#180662

Well it’s nice to see you guys sure like to support this site by telling everyone to adblock them, right-o!

They are the cleanest sort of ads for the site, would you rather we have little flash popups (not the ones people can block) or stuff like that. These are only temporary, nothing permanent.

Reason I added text ads is because people have been blocking the google one and we're gonna need to renew our license for the sites software. We also could use an upgrade on the site for more expanding, "my.aqua-soft, email, yada yada yada".

Also I have made a skin for "special" group of members who deserve to browse the site without them.

Just please try to bare with us.

I didn't want people to get angry at Timmy. I kind of recomended he add the ads

:(

Me is sorry

#180668

Timan, is there anyway to donate some cash to aqua-soft?

#180670

ummm... i think i was ruining the mood.

i wasn't saying no ads... i was saying if your clicking the google ads there's no need for the tooltip right?

i'll donate cash to a-s if you provide a way to so i can move from just google ad to adblock all and feel fine about it.

i was just giving feedback on the tooltip ads, which i personally find distasteful. I understand that you need to fund the site.

#180678

Hey... if it keeps the site up and provides for expansion, I'll start clicking away.

They don't bother me at all.

#180681

Since clarifications are in order: I can see the banners, but apparently the ToolTips (or the word styles) are not showing up in FireBird (.7). And I am not using any type of ad blocker.

Also, lately I have forgotten about the banners, but I have clicked them the past few days :( .

I've been trying to convince Tim that people would be willing to donate money in exchange for ad-free browsing...

What do people think to that idea?

All we need is a couple of hundred dollars, total...

Assume all the regulars were to donate a few bucks each, we could raise that money in no time...

They are ok.. but i don't click 'em cuz it just takes too much time to load the tooltip.. oh, and the page kinda freezes for 4 seconds (can't scroll)..

I've added them to the site, but they were not working last night so they are over the whole site. They are only going to be on a very few things. Its to help pay for Invision Board and now to renew VirtualNews license. People using IE are the only people who will see them, that does not mean go run off and use Firefox, help support the site!

I'll be tweaking them through out the day to help make them less of a pain for some of you.

If there is an ad you see that you feel is harmful in anyway just report it to me. We're trying something new here to bare with us and not go haywire.

Thanks....

I am getting these in firefox .9 =\

Clicking the ad just to boost the number of clicks isn't what they are for, and I know Google monitor sites to see if people are doing this - another forum I read got an email from google telling the board owner to stop promoting clicking the ads when people weren't actually going to use the site the ad linked to.

Just something to consider ;)

I've been trying to convince Tim that people would be willing to donate money in exchange for ad-free browsing...

If AS is that desparate for money, I know I wouldn't mind contributing say £2 / $2 whatever you prefer to keep it running. If even 1/4 of the active members did this, I'm sure that would easily cover liscence renewal costs. I'd contribute simply because having this place with all it's app developers is so useful, along with the supply of talented artists, and I'd like to see it stay around. I can block all the ads for free, so I don't think that's a good way to inspire people to support the site.

Although having that badge under my name would be sooooo cool!! :P:D

The ads wouldn't be so bad if they didn't cause that pause while scanning the page. Sites like www.ign.com use these all over the place and there is no pause whatsoever (don't know if this is just because they have a better host or not though). The idea of the ads is great; incredibly unintrusive, lightweight, barely noticeable. But when it causes a significant delay in browsing, it makes the site almost unbearable to surf.

#181203

I think its the code timmy is using. Its rather new. But I don't experience any paunce. I am using IE.

#181356

I'll gladly donate £10... whatever that ends up being in USD... In a couple of weeks that is once i get paid thus taking me back inside my overdraft limit lol! I use A-S enough that I feel its only right to give something back. Not overly keen on the popup ads, but if the money from them goes to pay for server/software upgrades then I don't really think that anyone should be complaining.

Cheers,

[EDIT]

One thing, though... I just noticed the ads scan the user group text as well... I think if at all possible Tim it might be a nice idea to just have the ad script scan the main body of the posts, and exclude sigs and user group text?
