Why Do You Mod Windows

I'm here because I love pissing off the mods and admins. Except Pe7er of course because he's new and I don't have any grudges against him (yet.... :6 )

^_^

@Wiz: thanks for the stats, now I'm terrified.

I do think however that the veterans of the site and others who care about whats happening here manage to fight off these leeches effectively....

yes, but at what cost?

;)

it's just wierd...I never expected so many to stand up for the same thing I believe in

it warms my heart

its just like somebody up there said, those of us that are not here just to leech off the community actually care.

#129937

i will not be done modifying my Windows UI untill it resembles a perfect Mac OS XIV

And with that I mean that Apple will allways be miles ahead of Microsoft in beauty of their OS. I'll just keep changing every single aspect untill I can afford myself a genuine Mac.

And themes that have the window's flag as a start button don't last on my Macintosh HD

#129951

I mod windows because I don't like the the look (design) of windows. Now I'm in love :D with my computer. I really like to customize it, to the thing I want.

Much thanxs to this community :P :woot:

I'm one of those guys that learns certain things through trial and error. Before they made cars repair-proof by the average person, I learned about cars when something broke and I either had to learn how to repair it or walk, like brakes, gas lines, fuel pumps, etc. The same applies to computers. As asinine as it sounds, I learn a great deal about computing because so many people have problems with Windows and there's so much to learn. If I got a Mac (like I can afford a dual G5 w/ 23" Cinema Display!), and it "just works", I will no longer relate to my fellow Windows sufferers. If I got a Mac, I would no longer have a need for all the great computer info imparted on sites like this one, AquaXP, etc.

I built this PC with my own hands, and learned so much in doing so. Who builds their own Mac?!

Anyway, after a long winded prologue, here is my answer to the question. I mod Windows because I suffer from Mac envy and want my PC to be as aesthetically pleasing as a Mac. Thus, like many, I'm one with champagne tastes with a beer wallet. I mod Windows because I love to learn new things and there is never a lack of that while modding Windows. Lastly, I mod Windows because I enjoy sharing what I've learned and acquired while learning with others. :D

well, aqua-soft is good for moding, and people here are nice.

if i need to register somewhere else to download/access somethin, i will

i guess that means i am leaching on other sites, but as is my home, and i can't contribute everywhere.

im sure aqua-soft is that site to some ppl, and im as guilty as them, although i guess i do always try to comment.

#129996

why do i breathe? -_-

#129999

Like most, I came here when AquaXP went down (joke)

No seriously, I came because I was curious about emulation and GUI design. But, in honesty, I'm not that interested in making my PC look 1:1 like a Mac any more, I just want my PC to look/work the way I want it to.

On the point of the origins and destination of the community as a whole, I don't think that its necessarily a bad thing for the community to be organic, nor do I think it a bad thing that people are here for different reasons. Also, it shouldn't need to be reiterated what this community was or is or should be, to be philosophical about it, it is what it is.

IMHO, all that matters at the end of the day, is that people try to see it as a Community and try to contribute to the community in their own way... rather than another site where you can download cool stuff! :canadian:.

Just my long-winded two pennies.

I don't know about everyone else but when I joined the site it was mostly held up by people like Timan, Goku, IceMan, and ofcourse - you Duckie (obviously there are more names - these are just a few to get my point across) so its not that surprising that a lot of my views about AS ae similar...

I guess it has to do with the people I learned from...

i'm not really here for any "goodies." i don't download many files from here, but i don't really contribute any "aqua" related products either. i enjoy the community, just being here and helping out, answering a question about y'z dock here, or samurize there. i like to develop my own style, and just because i'm not interested in having a complete mac osx emulated pc doesn't mean i can't enjoy the community. just being here to meet people and seeing what neat things people have done to their pc's is more than enough reason to linger around here.

i still enjoy aqua, but it's been placed to the side. :)

#130010

I like to make the best of both worlds.

Plus I use Mac's a lot for editing and the interface suites my tastes.

#130013

I use windows for years now and i never had that much of a problem with the design - until i was introduced into the beauty a mac has to offer. So i came here to this site/forum to make my pc look like a mac. Currently I can't afford a mac, so while i'm saving money to buy a "real" one someday i'm stuck in modding windows. Like some people said before, first i just wanted a perfect mac clone, but with the time i wanted a system that suits me and that is different from a standard design.

I try to help people (when i'm sure what i'm talking about  ) and also reading and writing in this forum (i won't say any english forum ;) ) helps me to improve my english - not to go off-topic let's say I mod my english. :P

I forgot to add...

it's fun.

i mod b/c well.. honestly. i can't help but do it.. i mod everything in my life to be more like what i want.. be it house, car, computer, etc. it just so happens that i like the glossy, glowy, "aqua" effects that Apple chose to do. i don't want a mac per sae.. i like the expandablity, the choices that the PC offers.. i just happen to like the way the mac looks to a large degree. now, if Apple ever makes an OS for PC, and supports all PC hardware, i'd gladly switch.. till then.. thats not going to happen. at most i'll buy a powerbook or ibook just to play w/, read books, and listen to music. lol

#130133

I mod because Windows, by default, is not aesthetically pleasing to me. Which is why I've replaced the shell icons, and hacked together a GANT based Messenger. I don't emulate Macs on purpose, in fact, the look just doesn't attract me that much. No Mac theme has lasted over a week on this computer.

I'm here for the occasional icon, wallpaper, neat program, or FireFox theme. Not really for Mac emulation/visual styles to make Windows pretend to be a Mac.

take a look around...

like what you see?

that's why I mod

I mod windows for the obvious reason voiced by many others... windows looks butt ugly. My first real experience in computers was on a real computer with the best OS ever made: NeXTSTEP. I had no idea how good I had it until I left college where the NexT Machines were and had to get my own computer running MS Windows 3.1. I saw right away that Windows was the poor man's NeXTSTEP. Not even as good as that, really. Unfortunately I couldn't run the software I needed at that time on a Mac, so I descended into the world of Microsoft with a tear in my eye, a pebble in my shoe, and a thorn in my arse. I've been wanting a NeXT Machine ever since. NeXT was awesome. It was Steve Job's baby: the ideal machine with a kick butt, aesthetically pleasing OS. For those who don't know, OS X is basically the next generation of NeXTSTEP. So when I saw OS X for the first time on my Grilfriend's G4, I melted. I wanted it. But I built some powerful PC's on my own (for film production) and I couldn't switch over to the Mac (although I am now getting a couple for editing -- sweeeet!!). So, strangely, at the time a friend pointed me to the wincustomize site, which had its value, but it wasn't until I got here that I got what I really was looking for -- all the mods I could dream of to turn my sorry ass XP into something that looks and feels (almost!) like aqua. Ah, its so nice. I like looking at my computers again. For fun I did mod another machine running Win2K to look like NeXTSTEP, but its Aqua and the look of the new Mac OS that got me started on modding windows. And I have to say, from what I have seen of Longhorn so far, it seems modding windows will be around for some time to come. I wonder if anyone from Microsoft is paying attention?

Forgive me if I have rambled. I'm new here, but I thank all those who have paved the way for this community to exist and flourish, and I am grateful that your obsessions are as nutty as my own.

cheers all

well, honestly first i started modding windows because i wanted my 98 box to look like XP... then, once i got used to that look, i was bored with it when i finally got XP. i started looking at Macs, and really liked their GUI, so A-S was basically the next logical step... i actually learned about it while i was looking for some HQ icons, and this was while it was temporarily defunct.

now, i've moved on past just mac-like skinning, and i basically hang around to find new themes, steal the occasional mac-gui element, and because i like the community. i mean, isn't that what this is all about? community?

PS- Nice avatar, Ancormax :D

I started modding Windows GUI when I was tired of the XP look (very plain) so I found aqua-soft and got my GUI skinning on the go.
