New Ical Clone

hi guys. i wanna thank all of you for all your help, you've been really great. i've been getting a lot of pms about the beta. remember, if you're intterested i'll be giving out betas till sunday night, so don't hesitate to pm. but just pm dudes, i don't wanna have a HUGE thread with only mails from people, let's make it easier for the mods and stuff. well, thanks again.

/me chalks duckie up for a point and gives everybody who asked for the beta in the thread 100 punches per face

Threads like this also defeat the purpose of the PM rule. People who post there E-mails here simply wont get into the beta, simple as that.

Hey haulden, just checked out the beta you sent....

Looks great so far.

One thing I'm really glad to see is no apparent memory problems. :D

Alot of the betas I've seen here seem to have memory issues, or in some more rare occurances, eat up CPU cycles even when idle.

Again, glad to see those things absent in this beta.

So far, no problems I can see need fixing. (too early in development)

As far as suggestions.... Not sure if you intend to do this....

Aple has a bunch of calendar libraries in ".ics" format, like holidays...entertainment...sports...

If you could add support for these, I know everyone here would love you even more! ;)

EDIT: I just downloaded the US Hollidays .ics file. It's basically just a text file.

I'm not really a programmer, but it looks pretty straitforward. Hope this helps.

Looking at the apple website i think its a good posibility that we can include it. Im thinking an external application to handle it at this point tho, so it wont be seamless like the real iCal, nor will it be able to update everytime you go online like the real one does . Doing so would involve allot more work and lag down the app than wanted.

So this means probaly onle things like holidays and events that are set, and not things like movies where in 3 months a new movie no ones ever heard of gets released.

BTW is there anyone here that know how the real iCal stores events? Ie the file it puts on your hard drive. If someone can get a hold of it id like to look at it.

Check the edit I just added to my previous post.

And the trick in downloading the .ics files is to copy & paste the path to your address bar and take off the "webcal//" at the beginning.

Here is a sample of one holiday (Lincoln's B-Day):

BEGIN:VEVENT

DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20020212

DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20020213

SUMMARY:Lincoln's Birthday

UID:BC988F3E-242F-11D8-91BD-000A958A3252

DTSTAMP:20031201T185220Z

RRULE:FREQ=YEARLY;INTERVAL=1;BYMONTH=2

END:VEVENT

No i was refering to the way iCal STORED events, not the way the online calanders worked. I dont suspect there the same, as that format has allot of specifics that work well with repeating events. Its tricker then it looks too because you have things like interval and such in there. Apple has a complete breakdown of the format here > http://developer.apple.com/internet/applea...endarfiles.html

Suprisingly they have like a COMPLETE breakdown of the format, and even include sample coded to parse it.

@jbgamble: thanks for your comments, i'm really glad you liked the beta. as far as your idea for the ics files, i think it's a grand idea, imoa go check out them files and see how i could implement them on the final versions of the app. the only drag is i have a lot to do before i can implement that, so i hope u don't mind waiting to see that option in. once again, thanks.

Well, maybe not that big, it all depends on your perspective lol. I kinda finished the program. Not in its entirety, but the part I wanted to finish by today it's done, you know the lite version. You can make appointments for a week, as different users, in different calendars, using different colors, you have access to "tiny" mode (u'll see), and i think that's pretty much it. Of course all of your appointments and dates and whatever are saved automatically by the program so you don't have to worry about it. Well, all I need now is some kind soul who offers to host the zip with the app, it's about 615 kb, so it's not too big, if you can help out, please holler :)

i'd also like to take the ocation to genuinely thank every one who participated in the beta held saturday and sunday, you were of incredible help. The ones who I told I'd send them the beta and didn't, I'm really sorry, a lot of people applied and I'm aware I might have lost some of your e-mails so really, sorry. But thanks a lot guys, you were of enormous help. Well, until someone tells me they can host the app, that's pretty much it, thanks for letting me entertain you throughout these two days of unstopable coding :D I'll keep working on the app till it gets perfect, but it's gonna be a drag, I don't know when I'll have it ready which is why I give you this totally usable and working lite version of it. I hope you like it. I'll shut up now X-x

Oh yeah, you can check out some screenshots of the current state of the app here
