New Ical Clone

well, how you guys doing? i hope this finds you all well. truth be told, i've never posted much in aqua-soft, maybe a couple of times. but let's get right to it: i've seen in the last months some projects starting to clone iCal, but they've gone straight to nowhere. so i finally decided to clone it myself. i started it today morning, and i'm kinda 50% through with the gui stuff. as far as the actual code and all, pretty much all you can do by now is just draw the little squares that represent appointments. here's a screenshot:

ss1.jpg

i'm totally aware that the screenshot is quite unimpressive, but again, it's really early in the developing stages, i've only been working on these 2 hours, but it's coming along nicely. I'll realese an alpha of the project tomorrow, so you guys can try it out and give me some feedback, you know, what's working, what's not, what needs to be added, what need to go out and stuff like that. I plan to realese the full app in a week or so, but it's gonna be the light version, which means that you can only make appointments and stuff for the current week. the final app, i mean the full total working clone of iCal will probably be released within march, that's assuming i can find someone to give me some resources i'll be needing and some info on the behaviour of the real app.

anyway, that's pretty much it, hope you guys like the info and the ss, and keep checking this thread for the alpha and more info coming next week.

Bunkka, itll take you to a hotlinking protection page, dont worry, copy and paste the link and it works, thats what i did, it worked.

@Haulden: What implementation are you looking for here, what is working now? it doesnt look much like iCal, thats mainly why i ask...

well, i'm looking for an exact replica, and right now i know it doesn't look very much like it, but i always leave the gui stuff for the end. right now i was just working on the little drawing engine that allows you to draw the squares where the appointments will go and saving the appointments to files in the app folder. it's really not much now, but i'll see if i can come up with something useful. i don't wanna make promises i can't keep either, so i'll just wait and see what i can come up with.

Well, i wish you best of luck then, always thought that coding projects, because of their nature need to be built from code and then accommodate the GUI, that is how you would build a house too, put the walls up and then paint them.

Cheers,

Hope to hear from this soon, dont let it die.

well, that's probably my biggest fear here, i don't wanna let this become like the other iCal clone projects that have just died. i'll release, in the worst of cases just the lite version. thanks a lot for the comments, always appreciated.

great start

dont let the masses sway you, tho

they will beg and plead for you to release it to an annoying extent, but you just work at your own pace and lets hope the mods do thier job at shutting them up for you

Good luck

keep us updated.

little more news on the project:

well, i've been coding and coding and it's really starting to shape up. right now i have it at the point where you can set up appointments for the entire week (only current week), it then saves up every appointment on separate .dat files so they can be opened the next time the app runs.

a screenshot of the current state of the app can be found here:

new screenshot

other than that, i'm gonna be needing someone who could facilitate me some resources, mainly the little squares that are drawn on the calendar when you make a new appointment. you know, the colored ones. i can't seem to find any high res screenshots of these online.

well, that's pretty much it for now, oh and thanks a lot guys for the feedback and what not, it's much appreciated.

pd: i'll be releasing the alpha tomorrow, it'll be open, just don't forget to send feedback on the app itself. thanks a bunch
