Yeah, I know, contra corrected me a few posts after. I just got confused because I knew that XP was one version higher, so I assumed that it was the same for NT to 2KPro

don't things tend to get smaller when you compile them? i'd have thought 200meg wwasn't enough given that xp fills up a cd.

the linux kernel is 40 Meg in source, less than 5 meg compiled (in my case)

OK, so what I started to download was the kernel compiled. That makes sense now. But still, when something is compiled, it is written into Machine Language, which is more "text" than the code.

What i don't understand is why everyone is so worked up about? Wow, the source code is out...what are we gonna do with it? Is anyone actually gonna make a mac like kernel from it? The only thing in my opinion this source code is useful for is for installing windows illegally, if u don't have cash.

it can, think about it, your getting the core of how windows works. if you found out how somthing works.. cant you exploit it? of course you can, you can find holes in the code to make new viruses etc. The source code shows how windows works and what not, so of course it can mean a security risk, your getting into the insides of the OS and can exploit the raw form of it.

I dont know what to think here about this yet. There are so many possibilities, if it is even the real thing. Hopefully, if it is the real code, it will end with microsoft realizing that people could help them with thier code.

and I know, this is a very naive approach, since the code will probably be abused like mad

1. According to Microsoft, the entire source code for Windows2000 is 50GB, and this makes sense.

2. Who said the US government runs Windows? Most of their stuff is linux at this point. Only the end-user desktops are windows.

If it's compressed source code, it probably won't be anywhere near that size. 250:1 seems like a high compression ratio (best I ever recall seeing personally was ~20:1), but who knows how much repeating segments there are.
