Windows Source Code Leaked

Neowin has learned of shocking and potentially devastating news. It would appear that two packages are circulating on the internet, one being the source code to Windows 2000, and the other being the source code to Windows NT. At this time, it is hard to establish whether or not full code has leaked, and this will undoubtedly remain the situation until an attempt is made to compile them. Microsoft are currently unavailable for comment surrounding this leak so we have no official response from them at the time of writing.

This leak is a shock not only to Neowin, but to the wider IT industry. The ramifications of this leak are far reaching and devastating. This reporter does not wish to be sensationalist, but the number of industries and critical systems that are based around these technologies that could be damaged by new exploits found in this source code is something that doesn't bare thinking about.

We ask that for the wider benefit of the IT community that members and readers support Microsoft by forwarding anything they know about the leak to the Microsoft's Anti-Piracy department.

If this is true we can finally tweak the code to our Aqua benifits.

No for real if this is true Microsoft is in big trouble...

Seriously this is hardcore not good.One of the reasons windows was as 'secure' as it is is cause it wasnt open source. I hope there arnt as many similaritys between 2k and XP as i think there are.

and it was a big deal when HL2 source got released.

Actually, the Source Code from Win NT was also leaked... And Windows XP is mostly based on that one. So, do worry. ^^;

But yeah, bolero is right... This could bring havoc to the whole word... Virtually, Windows is T3H OS... It might not be good, but it's definetely true.

It could be a disaster.

security through obscurity is not security, even microsoft have admitted that.

the problem is, where before the bugs would have been found over time, now they will all be found very quickly probably. Just guessing... who can tell in reality, microsoft might turn out to be excellent coders ;-)

the diffrence between the source of a kernel and the source of an an entire expecialy unsecure operating system including all its networking 'stuff' is huge.

2000Pro is based off of NT. XP is based off of NT.

NT Evolution

NT 4.0

NT 4.1 = Win2KPro

NT 4.2 = WinXP

networking comes with opendarwin, its a fully fledged os, not just a little piece of mac.

aside from that, kernels have the networking built into them anyway.

Umm, its not just the kernel. OpenDarwin is a whole working operating system.

The only thing NOT open source is the GUI. All the low level stuff is available. Rarely would a GUI be a source of vulnerabilities
