Doom 3

OK, no flaming. But I must disagree. IMO Doom 3 looks a lot better than Half-Life 2. HL2 has too many colours for me :) Doom 3 is almost monochromatic, very dark and I love id's main idea and purpose: to scare players. I'm in love with id games since I've been killing Nazis in Wolfenstein 3D...a sentiment  STILL it's just the matter of taste. I respect HL2, I have HL2 skin for Windows Media Player.....well maybe because there's no Doom 3 skin for it yet

Fuggedabout how it looks. Dig those SOUND EFFECTS, man!!

PC games have better graphics generally. But have a lot of playability due to multiplayer games and stuff which have been (till recently) only a pc attribute. Console games have better stories behind them generally and you never have to worry about upgrading your hardware or anything usually.

PC Gaming is far inferior than Console Gaming

You're blowing you know what out your @$$. PC games are far superior to anything available on the X-Box in terms of graphics and playability. I have em' both so I speak from experience. Also, any avid gamer will tell you that a mouse and keyboard works much better than a gamepad. If you don't believe me, meet me on the UT2003 battlefield and I'll school you with my keyboard and mouse.

You won't be schooling anybody with your keyboard, honey! :banging: Stop estimating in such a rude way, it is not welcome. Discussion on pads and keyboards is like discussion 'I prefer sandals to mp3 player'. Absurd. These devices were designed for different purposes, you can't put them in one line. Apart of that they are good in they own tasks. It's true that keyboard is better for UT2003 but tell me: have you ever tried to play Tekken or Virtua Fighter on keyboard? That is horror! ;)

We all have our own preferences, people.

Respect that.

For example, I typically prefer playing games on my PC, but, of late, I've been much happier with Xbox games purely because of the fact that, of late, if I'm using a PC, I think to myself "I could be working instead of wasting my time relaxing", and so I feel guilty.

I'm going to be watching this topic closely.

Let's keep it clean and flame free, please. The slightest slip into what looks like a flame by anyone, and this topic will be closed.

Just a pre-emptive warning, for any of you who're thinking about getting all emotional about the fact that person A doesn't like platform B.

There has already been at least one "flame" in here, as far as I'm concerned, but I'm willing to let one slide. If I see another one in here, there'll be hell to pay.

Thanks Stevie, someone respected had to hold these horses. Including me of course, I went too far estimating here. But what can we do, it's all about tastes...

Exactly.

And the interfaces for Console Games are planned to be used wtih Gamepads, such as the DualShock 2 or the Xbox S Controller or the (Really really really ugly) Gamecube controller.

Go play PS2, NGC, DC and throughly play Xbox. THEN argue about stuff you don't really understand.

Don't make generalisations like that - there are people in here who know what they're talking about, and you're still not as right as you think.

Oh, and it's a long time since Xbox has been able to "run games which look exactly like their PC counterparts".

And with regards to the controllers and the power and all of that:

Controllers are the user's choice. I much prefer the (non-S) Xbox controller to the Gamecube or the PS1/2 controllers.

Graphics capabilities on PC games are getting far beyond that of consoles now. Take "Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne".

Xbox:

PC:

Ok, so it doesn't affect gameplay that much (The Secret of Monkey Island is still my number one game of all time, and I still play it regularly), but it does make a difference, in terms of immersion.

Yes, a PC monitor is much better in terms of response and dot pitch (which, by the way, you seemed a little confused on - dot pitch is typically 0.2-something mm, not 0.0-anything), but that still doesn't explain the difference. The two screenies I linked would have been taken on PCs, with the Xbox and PC versions of the game's code.

It's a well known fact that console games producers cut corners that PC games producers simply don't have to. Ok, this is getting less, but it's a simple fact that the Xbox simply doesn't have enough memory for the textures that a lot of games on PCs are using now. The 64Mb RAM is shared, so to use two 32Mb textures (assuming that they're not using compression which, in a file that big can either make no difference or a massive difference, depending on algorithms and data), that's gonna be one texture at a time (because the other 32Mb of RAM is gonna be taken up in part, anyway). That means a lot of virtual memory paging for the Xbox, which means much slower game speeds. PCs, however, can use however much the minimum specs say they have, and whatever's left over, too. Less paging per frame to render, for a given texture size = higher (potential) frame rates or higher detail at a given frame rate. No matter how you do the calculations, the PC has everything in terms of rendering in it's favour.

If you want to discuss computer and console architectures, however, can I recommend we take it to Twisted CPU...

So xbox has worse graphics. The graphics look fine for me, and for me to get BETTER graphics on the pc, I would have to spend over $500, which isn't a possibility right now.

You guys have to stop being so hardcore, and realize that it doesnt matter for most people (even me) if the res is 1024x768 or 1600x1200.

Not to mention that consoles never crash, and the games almost all games stay smooth, where on a PC, many games will be choppy no matter what the hardware (SW:Galaxies).

I'm not talking about the actual graphics - I'm talking about the potential... You should know that I'm in pretty much the same boat as you - I use my PC for the occasioinal game (like Neverwinter Nights), and mostly for developing non-games.

Oh, and I run everything that I run at 1280*1024. My system's almost 3 years old now, and it runs everything I want. That's all that matters to me.

As for console games never crashing, that's not true - it is possible to make most consoles crash, at one point or other, with certain (well chosen) games.

The point I was trying to make was that Myuu.exe's "main reason for PC games LOOKING better" was wrong. It's not the monitor - yes that's a (small) factor, but it's not as big a factor as the hardware. And yes, I know that most people don't care about the difference, but for those that claim that there is none, they need to wake up and smell the silicon.

They released "Pirates! Gold" for the Sega. That means something. But it seems like they don't release many turn based strategy games for the consoles. I think that alone makes them inferior to the PC.
