That video is really cool.
3d Desktop

But let's be honest here, if it runs in JAVA. That PC was a super computer, with like 600 teraflops and 20tb of RAM.
Java is awful, nothing will ever run decently in java. SUN should just admit it.
it was just a normal desktop computer, java desktop is just marketing
i read that it was all done on a laptop pc
If it was running VM maybe it would be a little more believable. But sun JAVA is about as slow as molasses in january.
Limewire is pretty runs very well, even in Windows. It's frankly th best Java app I've EVER SEEN.

i'm not positive if this link is newer than the one posted, but I found this. It's in realVideo, and Sun's exec president goes into rich presentation about this cool 3d OS, project looking glass.
meh, it looks aaaalright
i think the 'minority report' os would totally be more intuitive, you know where you can drag your windows around, and push them back and bring other ones forward
i don't see how fliping things around and stacking them like a door helps other than being eye candy.
also, this '3d world'--is it supposed to be 360 degrees, cause that could be one hell of a virtual desktop...

same thing, different link.
I got a demo of a 3D desktop software years ago I cant remeber the name of it now its wasnt as advanced as this but you could move you desktop 360 but you could also move forward and back instead of just sliding left or right.
It didnt make the windows 3d Images they were a shot shown on a flat canvas but you could spin the canvas. As I said it was many years ago so the graphic wernt hat hot and it ran very slow on most machines but the idea was still the same.
It was very awkward to use and I uninstalled it within a short while of playing. It had some good features but I really cant see the advantage of leaving things in a 3D environment. Its somtimes hard enough to find a window or link without someone being able to use the phrase "its behind you"
There's a program called 3DNA (or made my a company with that name - not sure which) that makes that sort of thing.

hmm i swear i've seen this before somewhere... oh wait, MICRO$OFT BOB?? :c h34r sp34k
Yeah, 3DNA is absolute crap. It basically creates a program which rests on the desktop and it's a pre-rendered CGI scene of a lobby in which the users can point to various appliances/doors/windows which relate to window's default folders and applications. There's absolutely nothing inovative about it.

i kidd...i kidd
they said it was for linux, so i assume it would work for just about all linux distros.....and correct me if im wrong, but it wouldnt be that hard to port to OS X if sun wanted to do so.....its like expose to another level (yes, a third-dimensional level)
Actually, it may be extremely difficult to port to OSX. If it's using X11R6 (which it most likely is if it works with existing apps), then you can only use it with X11 apps on OSX (which are not official).
So basically, it may be able to be ported to OSX, but if you're not using an X11 interface, it'd be useless.
I think this thing is more "eye candy" than useful. What I'm looking forward to is the freedesktop.org xserver, which will have all the features of Avalon and Quartz, but the server is already in a usable state. I don't feel like going into all the details, but basically it's up there with the technological advancement, and the possibilities are endless, because X11 can have extensions made by anyone.

nah...
Im thinking in Johnny Mnemonic ![]()
and as idea I think is cool. but you will need a the whole machine dedicated to show 3d effects and if you use all your resources to show effects, well just use some stardock aplications. But I still thinking that idea is cool
Looking Glass is being made open source: http://www.theregister.com/2004/06/28/look...glass_goes_gpl/
Topic Moved.
This is best suited to Cross Platform software, methinks...

not bad....
//off topic, could anyone understand that Asian man talking in the video???

I think it would be cool if all 3d game makers add a 3d enviroment plugin for that interface (if it was for windiows :tear:) That way... you could exploer and work in your favorite scenes of the game
