looks like OSX has a definite competitor! and its for PC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELLS YEAH!
whoa that pimp, cept it would be cooler if it were for XP.
Anyone know when that OS is coming out?
WOW nice!!! (Y) :woot: :woot:

why? so you could crash in 3-D?
i kidd...i kidd

they said it was for linux, so i assume it would work for just about all linux distros.....and correct me if im wrong, but it wouldnt be that hard to port to OS X if sun wanted to do so.....its like expose to another level (yes, a third-dimensional level)
Longhorn will have many 3D UI features in it once its finished.
Longhorn "aero" gui will just seperate all windows and components, breaking apart the OS gui components, nothing like 3d applications with sides, backs, vertical positioning, and 3d depth posisitoning. It will contain rotation of icons over mouse overs, warping (2d) of windows and widgets, and general purpose 3d like animations, rollovers, sidewinding, and interface enhancements. These all will be dependant on the high end video cards available at the time when Lognhorn is set for release.

I think you may have missed the point of both this video and the Avalon engine in Longhorn. This video explicitly states that the apps being run are normal apps (therefore not 3D), but are being "overlayed" (is that even a word?) with 3D functionality. Everything that they've shown in that video is perfectly do-able in Longhorn - Avalon is a fully 3D-enabled compositing engine, after all - I just doubt that MS (or Sun, or Apple) would implement features like that in a "mainstream" product because it would require hundreds of thousands of hours of usability testing to decide whether it was any use, and many of the features that that system offers aren't exactly "intuitive" in a WIMP desktop environment.
Good point. 3d desktops would be kind of hard to operate especially like that in the video. Many people find computers hard already in 2d, I doubt 3d desktops would help in warming people up to computers.

a 3d interface will be difficult to use. as long as we are tied to our desks with the mouse and keyboard..
imagine Sun's "Project Looking Glass" displayed via a projector..
and instead of a mouse.. you use a hand held pointer.. or even a glove.
and to type.. you would bring an ondisplay keyboard.. or in the case of gloves.. simply just type in the air.
then again, someone might figure out voice recognition by then, and there would be no need to type..

I think someone's been watching Minority Report a little too much ![]()
Honestly, though, I think that's the only way that sort of UI would be feasible, and how many home users are gonna want that, really?
Yeah, you would have to be able to move in 3d if you wanted to use a 3d UI and that would take some serous hardware changes.
I'd have though it would work similarly to a 3d modelling app...
Normal mouse movements to use nomally (x and y axis).
Hold a modifier key to move along the z-axis.
Hold a different modifier key to have free rotation about the origin (centre point of the axis).
But then there's only so long that the eye-candy appeal will last. It won't fascinate forever right. I mean, when I first got a dock it was *way* cool, but now its just a launcher cum running task viewer. I imagine that will be the same for the 3d GUI, if and when it's released.
i heard about a peripheral that makes your desktop a 3D game sort of. You can make or download levels from the website and the default one i think was like wild west. You see a first person pistil and you walk from house to house. Make a new folder? It turns into a salon next to your moms house (my computer). walk into the salon and shot a bottle. It runs your favorite program...Keeps going to possibilitys. I don't remmeber the site unfortuanatly but i heard about his in may. I'm sorry if this is the same thing since i am dialup and haven't finished downloading it.
You mean 3DNA flarex?
Now wait, before you all get your hopes up...
Make sure the Linux distrobution wasnt made for their SPARC hardware...
I wonder if it runs on solaris??
I have solaris 9, and it is the hardest OS Ive ever tried to install. The installer was very nice though!

come on...
we're not even close to minority report YET..
but this looks promising..

or samsung's "scurry"

yes. those are both keyboards..
now all we need to do, is combine that, with a nintendo powerglove type device, and we've got both mouse and keyboard in one device.
Why would you want Minority Report like stuff? It wasn't easily functioned. Think about how tired John's arms must have gotten.
that is pretty cool looking stuff.
But let's be honest here, if it runs in JAVA. That PC was a super computer, with like 600 teraflops and 20tb of RAM.
Java is awful, nothing will ever run decently in java. SUN should just admit it.
