Why Not Combine All The Apps/plug-ins?

Ok, I am looking at my \SYSTEM\Library\Core Services\ folder and I have to say...

Something has to be done about the plethera of folders in there.

I have:

About.app (jBox)

About this mac.app (xAbout)

Address Book.app (alilm's)

Clock.app (clockX)

Dock.app (Yz Dock)

Expose' (ieX)

Finder.app (AquaFinder and Alilm's)

Font Book.app (alilm's)

Hot Spot (xHotSpot)

Network Status (appwinaqua.no-ip.com)

Notepad.app (uk)

Preview.app (alilm's)

Sherlock.app (my mod)

Shutdown.app (iShut)

Stickies.app (xStickies)

Switcher (feAt's)

System Preferences (uk)

Volume (3r-1c)

and other apps in other folders including:

Console.app

Terminal.app

etc...

Ok, point of this thread--

Why can't we combine some of these app?

What I mean is, instead of having to run 100 different apps, why not combine some of them into one app.

this would solve memory issues, time constraints, productivity, and practicality.

Alilm? How about combining some of your apps into one?

The possibilities are endless folks...lets go.

and this is not a thread for

"Yeah, I agree!"

It's a thread for serious discussion.

So all replies which arent productive to the cause will be summarily deleted.

no duh...you want the same thing.

then post a solution, not just an empty agreeance

But which programs would you combine. I see that all the programs run independently and no need for combining. Sure there are tons of folders and each app of it's own, but what programs would you insist combining? I see only a few worth for the job. I think the only way to cut down on the apps would be to create a System Preference program. Then you can combine the sound, dock, and a whole plether of programs.

you DO realize you answered your own question, right?

and as for combining...why not combine Expose. Volume, and Finder or even something else?

The programmers here are independant.

To suggest for them to work w/ others on their programs is insulting.

Why does no one understand that? Its not as simple as "two heads are better than one".

you, OF ALL PEOPLE, who belong to the *nix communtiy and have preached about the benefits of open source would be the last person I would see against this.

#79707

Oh, and I am not suggesting putting the existing apps together, tho that is one idea.

we could always create a new app with the options built in

*nix

is linux a naughty word?

*nix is the common term for all variations of Linux/Unix distributions

I believe many can be joined, but not all. also there are a lot of About this mac applications, I see new ones every month.

#79716

it might not be possible due to the fact that different developers use different languages

it would be really cool but i just don't see it happening

#79718

c'mon, people, stop being so negative towards the idea.

We are a community, right?

or have we all gone selfish?

what the hell is wrong with combining our efforts?

#79720

Most of the members here use C++. With these combined efforts and the planets aligning just right, we could make a System Preferences (the program that I would think would be the most beneficial).

#79725

I agree (please delete me)

#79729

Yeah...It would be great to just get the computer to boot up with all these apps...but, how?

I'm new to this but off the start menu I've Yz shadow, then yz tool bar, then ObjectDock, then WinRoll, then stickies...It goes on. Then Dreamweaver won't skin...then Quark flips out...and as for pinball...well?

I won't be touching ObjectBar or Window blinds...but it's still a little complicated. And as for Roots..forget it! So complicated!!

Savanna again!!!

Give it six months of digging around in it all and you will still be as fustrated as all of us.

Look, I know that I am giving all these suggestions for programs, but yet I have no advanced skills in C++. If any programmer would like any logic help (how should I have this work), I am really good with that and I will help and support you. As will everyone else in this community. I think we could all ban together and make our dream open source program here at A-S. I know that you don't want this turn to another OpenSource vs non again (as I am not trying to), but for the sake of this type of project, I think it will be the best way to go around with it.

#79737

it would be good. i don't know how to program but i will be learning vbasic soon. maybe i'll make one. until then. i will be waiting.

What's the point of having a discussion on something if no one disagrees with it?

It sounds like a cool idea, but it will prob. be one of those community projects that starts out and a day later no one contributes to it and so it dies. It always happens because no one gives back to the community.

I have no issue with disagreements, but laziness is another story

Of course I am for open source, and community building.

But if someone doesn't want others help, I respect their choice. They ARE the programmer.

This is especially common on people still learning programming. Its more educational to do it all yourself.

ok, but noone said the developers arent willing.

In fact, noone has asked this until now.

#79764

i can remember a thread where *you* asked it Duckie... quite a while ago admittedly, but still...

If you can developers to do this, then power to you, but forgive me for being pessimistic

#79778

Who says I haven't asked?

And, did you forget the "Open Source Y'z Dock" discussion? Most of the programmers here said they didn't want their apps open source.

#79782

well, rather than having apps being combined into one, why not combine the apps into one installer?

I know it's not going to resolve any memory issues, but it would be handy.

Downside to either creating a mega-app or complete installer is that since there are so many programmers they are most likely to have many individual updates.

Solutions:

[simple] create one general mega app or complete installer that people have to stick with.

[difficult] create an update feature.

Just my thoughts

If anyone remembers the old FinderXP project, this is what Alilm, Hyperb0le, and myself were attempting to do several months ago- not combine the apps per se, but integrate them and make them work smoothly together under a common shell replacement/file browser. Work was started on FinderXP, with Alilm getting so far as to develop .six, the system by which the different apps would communicate. However, Hyperb0le took his ball and went home, and naturally things fell apart after that.

I myself would love to resurrect the FinderXP project, or start work on another similar project to what Duckie is proposing; but it takes the true commitment of developers who will stay committed to the project and not get bored of it. As with the FinderXP project, I am willing to provide all GUI elements from OS X needed. If anyone else besides myself and Duckie is interested, speak now and let's get our asses in gear.
