A Call For Help.

Every day, I open the forums, only to find that all the requests beiung made could be filled by me. I have almost EVERY file you guys are asking for. Object Bars, Themes, Icons...etc.

The problem lies in the fact that I have nowhere to host all these files.

Jef and I both need your help. First and foremost is a RELIABLE host for the AquaApps. Jef is about to release updates to them all, but noone has stepped up with a decent host. I'm afraid all the offers we've recieved are doomed to die once we put our load on them.

I have so many more files you all want. Most of which are from the REAL Mac OS X.

Let's have some SERIOUS offers here.

Once again, we need a host for the AquaApp's AND other files everyone wants.

Total size will exceed 100 megs, too, so be smart in your reply. Noone with Geocities need reply, nor anyone with a .tk address or a DNStogo address either. We want reliability, not someones home computer that they use for games or do numerous reboots on.

They offer a mysql database with php4

Perhaps a distributed computing scheme is needed here. Something like Kazaa.. but more localized. Does anyone know of some kind of network that could provide this?

What we really need is to share our bandwidth.. I'm willing to give up some bandwidth here if it means the community could benefit.

Maybe a lot of mirrors? to smallers servers?

I have a dedicated webserver just sitting here.. problem is, the bandwidth is just a lousy cable modem.

Why don't you just have a main site with a ton of mirrors.. like Tucows. Just get a lot of people like myself to host files.

I like that idea!

There are some P2P client/server apps that do allow privatization, so the network would not have to be shared with the public so to speak.

Perhaps if the security was driven off of the registered users in the forum it would be easy to manage.

Some people may say that access should be granted for the public, which is fine, but I feel that if one is interested enough in the forum subjects then one would not mind registering to gain access to posting and the files.

If enough forum users are willing to allow their systems to act as peers, then it may work out well.

I for one would do it, if I had broadband access, but I'm on a 56K modem in New Zealand, so my location would be slow. Still though I would be willing to allow my pc to by accessed for small things, etc.

Im on a pretty fast cable modem connection so I could help in a P2P type network, I dont know how to set one up but Im willing to offer my bandwith

Hotline would do it, but my ISP is rotating my IP and updating my address would suck 'cause i'd have to do it daily.

http://www.webhosting.usallportal.com/ . Its got 3GB of space(thats right) and 25GB a month of bandwidth, all free. You just have to have your site there.

EDIT: OK, they might not let you upload all types of files. It could be a problem with me. Why doesnt someone else check.

I have 500mb space, can be increased if needed, and 20gb bandwith (can also be increased to something higher).

my site: http://aquaxp.com i think the domain name server thing is being worked out atm but thats how that is, maybe it will work tomorow.

As much as I appreciate everyones ideas, I think you're missing the point. Sites like freewebhost.com, freespace.com, look.at.me.come.here.tk.blah blah blah and the ilk are useless and they lie. They don't offer what we need.

Iceman had been hosting my page until recently, and for the past year, I had no issues. But now, my site is down, the downloads are gone, and the only offer I have for hosting won't allow me to include downloads. That isn't gonna swing for me nor jef.

ZzPcPzZ, I went to the link you provided, but there was no site, so I was waiting until it came up and to see how things ran once it opened. I know, from experience, that you have been around a while, but you have had some issues with hosting in the past. I just hope now that you have a .com, things will improve.

BTW, havent seen alot of news on any new icon sets from you...got anything planned?

I dont know if you know this, but i have had another domain for the past year, wihch my icon site is hosted on. Long ago i did have hosting problems. My site is now actually working. Its in its total beta phase, scheduled release is on christmas. You may see it here: http://www.aquaxp.com .

As for my icon site, i have stopped that. I dont think i can keep updating that site, it was long ago, and times have changed. I dont have much time for conerting / making icons. Although on aquaxp, i will only put real or real looking icons from osx.

Hmmm, duckie.. if your IP is rotating.. try using something like dyndns.org. You can download a little tray app that will do all these updates automatically.

The p2p idea is still valid. The trick however, would be finding a P2P app that would let only the community in, and keep the riffraff out.

SoftWax looks good, as it allows a top down control so only certain files (such as approved themes, wallpapers, etc) can be shared and downloaded.

What we don't need is a kazaa like client, because that would make files impossible to find without a strong search.

I know that deviantART used RedSwoosh for a while when they were having bandwidth problems but I have no idea how you obtain that and the website is an enigma.

All I know is that once you downloaded the redswoosh client, downloads on deviantart went wicked fast.
