Calling All Themers

Yo, I'm Code_monkey

In the past few days i've really noticed that some of the screenshots of Linux systems are, well, below par. I know that aqua-soft is a Windows orintated GUI customization site so me and contrasutra were thinking of creating a sort of "Aqua-soft for Linux". What we are looking for would be themers that would be interested in converting their themes to those compatible with linux GUI's (this also applies for GIMP, icons, themes, cursors, sounds). So those interested in helping the Linux Desktop revolution can e-mail me at code_monkey @ nextl3vel . net.

It will have have 3 main sections, forums, tutorials, and uploads.

What he means by "Aqua soft for Linux" is that the themers here value AUTHENTICITY and QUALITY over quantity.

Thats what linux is generally missing. The themers here are amazing at what they do, so thats what we want this to be about. Quality stuff.

We dont mean it will be aqua-cloning for linux.

it would be great with quality themes for linux.. and of course some nice aqua stuff in there.. and with this new xserver cooking up.. it be great for a dock!

Not to dis any of our themers, at all.

But I think most the themers are very familar with windows theming. And GTK2 or KDE theming is much more difficult. They have to learn a lot, and I *assume* (you know what they say) most of them don't even have a linux distro to test on.

I'd love it if that happened though.

Well, we are mainly aiming this post at the current Linux skinners here.

We don't expect Windows-only users to switch, but permission to port themes would be nice.

I always thought that getting a free distro (like there aren't enough of those) mod it to heck making it look similar to OSX and distribute the distro. Well, this implies that I use Linux. But I always wanted to do that. Maybe some dedicated person could take these tasks? That would be really nice.

If tutorials or a well-commented GTK theme became available, I'd be more than happy to port over existing Windows themes (if the proper permissions were secured first, of course). I've got the technical aptitude, but not too much of a creative/artsy side.

And as a side note (please excuse the use of netspeak <_<), OMFG is that theme FRICKIN' AWESOME m5brane.

You are one of the people we really want to participate on the site. Simply put, without talented skinners like you, the site would be nothing.

Would you also be willing to write up a small tutorial or two? I think if you can teach others the actual fundamentals of skinning in GNOME, GTK, etc, then I think we can really start to help the community.

Sure, I'll be glad to collaborate on tutorials with roberTO. Like I said,

I'll be glad to contribute graphics, themes, tutorials, etc. My only con-

straint is that I'll be travelling for work from next week until mid December,

so my time will be limited then. But I like this idea and I'm glad to help.

I'm back in Linux again (damn I already love Arch--thanks contra ), and I'm playing around with porting Crystalized, and I'm thinking I'd definately love to contribute. Just using m5brane's Glossy P gtkrc, I've got the theme probably about 40% done after an hour or two. And if I can't get permission to release this theme, I'm sure there are plenty of other themes I could get permission to port and would love to do. So yeah. I haven't had soda yet today and I'm rambling kinda, so I'll shush now.

I've received permission from Hippy and m0rphium to port their skins. Both are great WindowBlinds skinners, and the results should be good.

im interested in seeing what comes of this. i almost feel kinda guilty not running windows anymore but being on the staff at AXP, and i never go anywhere here except the others forum. strestout1 and i have been really trying to push a Linux/Aqua so ill talk to him about this. he and i have discussed doing some themes and stuff. ive never cared enough to make themes for windows, but im interested for linux. not to mention ive never had photoshop, but gnome is free. i certainly want to see this, and maybe it will be a place that we can ask some general linux questions as well. we do some here, but its not really the right place.

btw, we should try to get grandmasta to help out some.

I'm glad to see people (roberTO, GreySim) have been using the gtkrc file I put out with Glossy P. I hope they have the opportunity to improve on it; there are plenty of ways in which that could be done. I think this whole theming effort would be well served by having a nice, well documented gtkrc that makes it easy for people to make themes. Ideally, it will just be a matter of whipping up the graphics and then putting them in the folder with the gtkrc file.

In fact, what we should do is standardize the gtkrc I wrote so that it uses fairly generic names...i.e. button_normal.png, button_active.png, etc, so that it really is a matter of just dropping graphics in the appropriate folder. It's not the same as some sort of WYSIWYG editor for themes, but that would be a really nice tool for people just starting out, especially if they are converting themes. Does this sound like a good idea?
