Panther Worth The Upgrade?

So although I'm sorry to say my main computer is a PC running WinXP, just upgraded my ibook G3 to Panther, and man is it worth the upgrade. Everything runs WAY faster than it did in Jaguar, probably because of the updated Unix core (unlike Microsoft Windows that usually slows down your system considerably with each upgrade), and the new features are really cool.

Anyone with some cash it's definately worth the upgrade (although I admit it's pretty expensive - hook up the Student/Teacher Edition if you qualify).

Anyone using Windows, throw out your PC and move to the Mac world, this update will definately make my Mac my main system!

Has anyone else experienced better performance in Panther?

I hear you man the sooner that I am working I will get myself a Powerbook, since I already have a desktop PC that's fully upgradeable.

Don't upgrade, Panther has given me loads of problems, and I'm going to format my HD, and install it again with a clean install. IE does not work, FCP 4.0 stopped working, Quicktime never worked, Adrress Book crashes, its really pissing me off!!!! >.< >.-_--_-

nrzero has viruses and hacked warez (ONLY) in his mac. nrzero is those smuglers you see in the street selling lifted brand new products loaded with all hacked/cracked shizzle in the planet, for $9.99.

Of course he wont recommend panther.

------------------------------------

I, on the contrary, recommend panther. Its smooth, VERY FAST finder, simpler and easier access to the network and many new advanced features that may be luxurious which will be integral soon.

I had the pre-release and now upgraded with the real Panther, things work flawlessly. I'd say go for it.

Who wants to hear me complain?

My only problem:

WINDOW RESIZING IS STILL SLOWER THAN MY 100MHZ P1.

I dont care what you say, Ive tried it on iMacs, and even the $3000 G5!

This mainly affects "Brushed" apps, but window resizing in general is TOO slow. It really does lower productivity.

Its a fact Apple, FIX IT!

#76789

thanks :ss_goku: , he had me confused there

#76790

yeah keith,

Panther rules, as its linear to how jaguar was a major upgrade to 10.1. Any questions regarding on how and what, please post in the mac forum (even if its hardware related, i'll fix the title there since mac's hardware is mostly the same as the pc one).

anyway - 2 thumbs up from me about panther. :rule:

---------------

I must agree and disagree with contrasutra on the brushed apps.

Its true on slower on older g3's - but its pretty comfortable on fast G3's and G4's.

Check out iTunes for windows. It has nothing to do with the OS (you didnt say it has anything to do with the osx) but only with the 'heavier' textures complex on the brushed and thats kinda slow alright (though the fastest out of all brushed apps or skinned apps i've ever seen).

On the other side, it also depends on the application type. The more things and feature it contains, the slower the resizing is. The finder and anything else bsides iTunes is BLAZING fast on my machine (i dont want to imagine how faster its on G3s only). iTunes is kinda draggy, but Apple inserted a certain lock that on pathetic iMac's like mine resizing such heavy graphical applications it makes the resizing not show full window real time but a single frame.

 love you all

Hey for the ULTIMATE TEASE, for the best review of Panther and apple product ever, PLEASE READ THIS.

Many mac users who debated whether to get it or not, will probably see what their missing.

#76920

If you have any friends who go to a university or any major college they can get panther for dirt cheap, like 70 bucks from their school. Im fortunate enough to be entitled to that, but I dont have a mac, oh well. You can also get windows for 5 bucks at my university too, completely legal, as well as other high priced software for reduced price like adobe products. I believe many major universities have this available for students and staff (at least in the midwest). Look into it if you just HAVE to get a copy of panther.

Panther is awesome.

There isn't really anything I can't do that I did with Windows (aside from the nice admin. tools and the half-ass maintenance tools). I'm almost 95% sure I'd be on one of those really lame "Switch" commericals for the average PC user. And yes, this is coming from a MCSA guy. Not bragging, just explaining my nerdish time and waste of $$$!! with M$ crap.

:)

Panther is awesome, flat out, its a lot less sluggish than Jaguar, a little more "exploerer-ish" with Finder imo, and Expose is just sexy, and then there's 148 other things. I've had no problems what so ever from the 129.00 retail version, and a recently clean install of this product. Font Book is scary, do not use this what so ever till the patch, but other than that. . .that's pretty dang good. Compare Font Book's problems to Windows security flaws out the wazoo. . .yeah, nuff said.

Buy it if you can. Well worth the investment and time. Nothing but great things to say about Panther. Awesome job Apple.

:)

(always remember ALL the problems with XP when it first came out, add the recent security problems, then compare all that to OS X. . .yeaaaah, its a no brainer, duh. Buying a Mac was one of the smarter things I've ever done, thanks Aqua-Soft for showing me the light)

#76946

 Here we go AGAIN. Just remember how lucky OS X is because there are so few hackers interested in making viruses for it....I guess thats some more incentive to buy panther... :D

#76970

It seems to me after reading the report that Goku mantioned earlier, although Panther does have a lot of new features and has been improved a bit it still has alot of things not going for it as well.

So Although I do not have a Mac I would say upgrade because it does fix alot of things but be wary of some of its flaws and new features because although it is better in some ways the bad things and new features are still there.

If you understand what I am saying please explain it to me.

IE in OSX 10.3??? it doesn't even come in 10.3, unless you did an upgrade...

but my question is why... Safari is now the default browser...

Saying QT doesn't work is like saying WMP9 doesn't work on XP...

in which case i'll wager YOU screwed it up some how.

Address Book crashes? sounds like a corrupted prefs file... regardless of the OS or the machine data corruption still happens. all it takes is one 1 to be a 0 or vice versa.

Personally I don't see how people can be screwing the pooch doing the upgrade to 10.3... I did it, worked just fine. Although I am an advocate for fresh installs when going to new OS builds... I went ahead and did it, and as typical as OS X is to install...

It simply is the easist OS I have ever installed... even over DOS. (DOS requires hours of manipulating Autoexec.bat and config.sys to get the system tweaked just right.)

The only real issue I can really see having installing Panther is on a Biege G3 even with a G4 Upgrade and a radeon 7000... I also have one of those too, but haven't got around to putting it on.

My recommendation is Panther is worth it... for Expose alone.

True, but even if viruses were being made for the Mac, OS X is a tough OS to penetrate, simply because of the UNIX/BSD subsystem. It's a very solid OS which doesn't need security patches every week.

Goku is such a zealot.

You can't even admit Window resizing is slow. Thats the one major problem with the GUI, and any normal mac user will admit this.

Oh well, I leave you to your "perfect" OS.

#77236

No OS is perfect, I will give you that, Contra.

You have to realize though that Goku is a Mac zealot, just as you are a Linux zealot. I am just happy that both of you love your respective OS's so much! ^_^

Panther is by no means perfect, but it is improvement.

#77264

er godpunk gets a (-) respect so it means I'm not doing anything cause I didnt raise it really (Y)

*sigh* so Contra, you AMD enemy ;) , what do you call Lamburgini's cultists, zealots as well? :moon:

#77297

No, I call them cultists  ...

you respect whore.

#77310

w00t, thanks for the respect.

The fact of the matter is of course its worth the upgrade. Apple rolled out a pretty good OS for being the underdog the first time around, with each new release it keeps getting drastically better. With the new features it's really pulling ahead of other operating systems with ease of use. Features like expose and, fast user switching, the new alt-tab in panther, and older features like the ability to roll up windows really makes panther a competitive product. If i had a mac, id be sure to go grab a copy myself.

I'm still a hopeless microsoft atomaton though. :P

#77766

heh heh, yeah thanks for the respect.

:)

No longer a hopeless Windows XP-nis boy.

OS X all the way! 2000/03 server. . .yeah that's a tad different story.

Need to see what OS X Server is all about.

Next Topic: "Is Panther Server worth the upgrade?"

Love this place

Do you own a Mac?

Because I cannot remember the last time I resized a window on my machine. If anything needs changed, I just use the zoom button. It resizes the window to fit the content and it is done. How the heck does this effect productivity? What app are you using that you want to resize? Again, I stress, I cannot remember the last time I ever resized a window.
