It seems moby has taken a flying leap into the bermuda triangle! he doesn't post anywhere else and has given no news of a new build of the somewhat buggy mobydock. has anyone heard from him? anything about a new release? I'm SURE a lot of us what to know. thanks.
Are the rumor's true????
hmmm..don't know whether a new one is gonna come out soon but if it is I wish he would fix the CPU usage issue more than anything else....
Look at Y'z Dock...it's magnification effect is not as good as the mobydock's but it uses only about 40 % of my CPU and looks pretty damn good especially when put on the sides
Siddharth
I think Moby has already registered here. ![]()
Moby is currently working on many features and will probably post it within 10 days:
the upcoming features:
1) Adding Bouncing icons
2) Fixed jagged icons while zooming
3) Side docks
4) always on top trigger
5) Fixed Drag n Drop feature
6) advanced and efficiant engine to run the dock FASTER.
7) CPU usage
and some other REALLY cool stuff.
It will be out soon ![]()
Edit --> Sid, actually the zooming effect in Yz, is a lil more similar to the OSX one, as much as the zooming effect in the moby dock is awesome

I see....I wouldn't know coz I've never really had a chance to work on the real OS X....but I like them both....Also I feel that Y'z Dock is more stable than the MobyDock..
Goku, it would be really awesome if Moby could incorporate all those features into the next release of the dock...would be looking forward to the bouncing icon effect....
siddharth
I hope the bouncing effect will not seriously drain resources.
Btw, there are two bouncing modes: one slow one while the app is launching, one jerky one for alerts.
Good luck Moby!
based on the system config you have given it should not be a problem....I'm running the MobyDock on a P3 600 with 512 MB SDRAM and GeForce2 Ti so if it runs on my computer it should be super-smooth on yours... ![]()

jef told me he was still working on his dock, was having pc trouble and he was getting the dock more function wise then looks.
But I personally feel that that dock should not only imitate the OS X dock in looks but also in functionality. I've watched a few videos of the real OS X dock in action and from what I've seen it seems almost as functional as the XP Start Menu (or even better IMO). The current MobyDock doesn't even close to what the OS X dock can do.
Don't get me wrong...I'm not complaining about the dock, I'm just saying that whatever Moby implements in his dock should bring it closer to the functionality of the OS X dock which is even more important than how the dock looks.

oh my! if this is true then please take your time moby
I agree Sid, Mobydock should run fine in my machine but I'm concerned with other users. I just hate it if developers create something that runs fine on a near-high-end machine only to disappoint many others who would run the app in their respective set-ups.
Anyway, I'm one of the few here who has access to the real dock (Jaguar). So if anyone needs help or info, just let me know.
Hmmm... is there a way for Moby and Y to work together? I'm sure that the result would be fantastic! ![]()
hmmm...I don't think there is any reason why the two can't work together (except for the fact that it would eat cartloads of CPU cycles) Lemme try it and if I succeed I'll post a screenshot... ![]()

I think he means moby and Y the people.
as in moby and Y work together to create the ultimate dock. ![]()
just for reference purposes, mobydock 0.6 runs great. zooms take about 1/2 second each way. mayeba bit less.
Celeron 500mhz (maxes out at 70% cpu usage), 384 ram, ati radeon 7000 oc'd to 166mhz clock and 32mb mem. win xp pro sp1.
this is my test machine, it runs even better (a lot better) on my other two pc's with 1ghz+
only thing that bugs me is the way it cuts off the text and icons sometimes, oh well.

right....silly me. i thought he wanted to run both docks simultaneously....(that would be interesting though)
anywayz I think it would be great if Moby and M. Yamaguchi could work together on a dock.....that would be great...moby you listening to me??? (wink, wink, nudge, nudge)

Wow im happy aqua soft is getting up again!
sounds awesome on what moby is planning..
I personaly love both docks Yz and Moby but i cant wait to see what moby releases next!
*gets all giddy*

hi guys I"m new to the Mac -> PC Emulation stuff but I"m really interested in it and I admire a lot of you guys and what you've done graphic wise
Anyways...I just wanted to add my testimonial for the docks in general. I've tried both Moby, Y's and Icemans dock and so far I like Icemans the best (though it does require desktop x to run). I used moby dock and I like it a lot and it sure as hell is easier to edit in general than icemans, (though I've figured that out so thats ok) but I don't think its very functional. (and I know I"ll probably get yelled at I realize that moby isn't intending to make his dock an exact copy of macintoshes) I know moby wasn't working on making a completley realistic dock and thats ok he did a great job! For me the dock works perfectly once I first run it but then I start to use it and my CPU percentage for some reason gets to 100% almost immediatley! Its really wierd! I don't have a slow computer either! (Pentium 4 2.53 GHz and 512 PC800 RDRAM 80 GB Hard Drive...its very recent). Things start to really slow down and I don't know why. Like I said before, I am using icemans dock right now and making icons for it (or editing them at least) and while they take awhile it is making me a lot happier. For instance I am making what I like to call "icon menu's" where you pause over an icon and other icons pop up above it...trust me its cool and you can't do that with Moby's (yet! hopefully you can do them in the future as well as bouncing (because wierd people like me think thats cool)). Also I've found that my cpu percentage doesn't get more than 10/15% with this dock so it works perfectly.
Also I just found how to convert Mac Icons to PC so I'm doing a lot of those and resizing them (128, 96, 72, 64, 48, 32, and 16 px) so they can work well on all reso
lutions.
I do have one question...I'm running 1280 * 1024 resolution right now and I want my icons larger once I finish them (either 64 * 64 or 72 * 72 px) Does anyone know how I can get all my windows icons this large?
I'm also happy to see you guys are using Invision Board...I used to be on the team there and helped out with the forums...there are a great bunch of guys over there ![]()

welcome mdz,
first, desktopX is barely used anymore..![]()
Im pretty much sure most people in our community, or at least the vetern ones, dont use desktopx anymore and as much as the quality can be great its far from being a comparison to the new docks. but then again, if u enjoy it nowadays - its great i guess
.
Second, regarding the benchmarks on your system - congratulations, nice high-end piece you got there, and im glad to see someone besides the lonely-wolf-me with RDRAM (i have 512 as well
). THe point is, i have 1.8ghz and mobydock runs perfectly smooth in high quality, exactly like low quality. - as for yz, i had up untill few days ago 1.3 ghz, and i see no difference in speed with the 1.8 (maybe smoother just a lil) and it runs just as fast and smooth enough to make me tear:P so im not sure why it goes slow like that for you...![]()
Regarding the icons, - if u wanna make your system to have 72x72 (assuming you have XP)- you should go to display properties, appearance, advanced and in the ITEM drop menu choose ICON - so now you can set it to 72.
take care, and once again, welcome ![]()
GOKU
thanks goku
I will be around a lot
I thought that was the way to do it but I wasn't sure if anything else was needed ![]()
I might eventually write a dock in C++ if I figure out how to do it but as long as other people are working on them thats fine with me. The feature I like the most with desktop x is the fact that I can make icon menu's with it (have other icons pop up over one I move over, which is nice). Another thing that is annoying with icemans dock is the fact that I have to make the zoom images and bouncing images...but if thats what I have to do for low cpu usage I will do it. I think that the best dock would be a flash dock ecxept no-one has one that works now
. If I can get away from using desktop x that would be nice but props still go to Iceman for doing a great job ![]()
Personally I prefer MobyDock... Have more configurations features and eat less CPU resources... But is more bigger that YzDock (I mean the size in bytes on the program). And no support 16bits color depth like YzDock do.
Toe-may-toe
Toe-mah-toe
Y'z dock and MobyDock seems to run differently on everyones computer.
Personally, I've found MobyDock begins to lag after time and takes too much memory comparitively, but that's just my experience. Y'z takes less memory and doesnt need to be 'reset' every couple of hours. Heck, I have it as a service.
Everyone has different specs. Therefore everyone will have different outcomes.
My Mobydock does not slow down with time. Maybe it is someother program that interferes with it. I had crashes of Mobydock with version 0.5 but not consistently (maybe 2-3times). I think is not due to Mobydock by itself but some software interaction.
im with duckie on this, when i used mobydock i tended to restart it everyonce a while. but a great appli .
yz doing a great job so far.
Hi,
nice to see aqua-soft back.
i just wanted to make some things clear :
- cpu usage will always be very high when you hover constantly over the mobydock. there are heavy calculations needed for the mag effect. on my new pc (2.54 Ghz, 1G RAM), it is still ~90% when i hover constantly. Yy dock behaves nearly similar regarding cpu-usage, although it seems less cpu-intensive overall. the technics used are comparable.so, this is expected. since Yz uses simpler mag effect (fixed in some way) and has no build in process-manager etc. it 'feels' faster for me. but that depends on your overall pc-specs (other people stated that Yz dock is slower) ! you can NOT expect much less cpu-usage in the NEXT release (sorry, goku). for that, i have to transfer calculations from the cpu to the gpu and for that i need DirectX 9 which is expected to be released around december !
- i really like the way Yz Dock handles drag&drop ! i had that on my todo-list for some time now and i will add it in the next release including this 'poff'-animation for deleting items.
- goku is right with the other features which will be added in the next release plus :
- popup-menus for winamp2/3 and folders
- the need for the imagelist.ini-file is gone (no more pre-loaded images)
i also read a hint somewhere in the web : when mobydock seems to become slow for you, try to see whether the state of the trash has something to do with it. as i monitor the trash-state periodically, it could be that the windows-api-function i use needs much time to get the actual state ! also try to defrag your drives when you have problems with this feature ! just a guess ...
i don't know when the new version will be ready, because i am really busy at the moment. i will certainly need 10 - 14 days !
stay tuned,
moby
