You can try, but don't expect much. Read: Anything.
Multiple cores is good for one thing - multitasking. Some programs make use of this by multithreading, which is basicly splitting a program into X parts, so each core processes them at the same time. Anything that does this (Crysis, for example) You'll see a huge performance boost compared to a single-core system.
Of course, when not gaming is when you'll see everything go pew pew pew with speed.
You could run a thousand little apps, and probably see no slowdown (Except you would, because each core can only process one thing at a time. You could run 8 processor intensive apps simultaniously 
)
CoD4 says 2.4GHz, yet I can play it on another machine @ 1.8GHz. I honestly don't give a crap what the vendor says, for obvious reasons 
Mine is 2.2GHz, runs it fine. Games these days are more gfx card dependant.

It's a 64 with 6 GB of Ram in it.
I'll post pictures. I don't know if I'll install Vista or Xp. I actually like Vista more than Xp, but skinning in Vista sucks. While is XP it's awesome.

So this computer came with one 750 GB hard drive. I like (actually it's more of a must have for me) to have 2 hard drives. I was planning on putting the 500 GB hard drive from my other computer in this new one. HOWEVER it doesn't fit. The ones in my previous computer have a thick cord going to it while the new hard drive has like two small cords. Is it because the new computer has a SATA hard drive? I'm not to sure.

Yes, the new hard drive is SATA while your existing hard drive is IDE. It most likely WILL fit if you take the IDE ribbon out of your other PC as well, as nearly all motherboards still have IDE plugs on them.

not to be a flamer... but there are some hardware advantages.
namely all-in-one design of the iMac. May I also remind you that the iMac benefited from a prototype 3.06ghz dual core chip with a 1066mhz system bus, before it was released to the rest of the market.
For its type, this is amazing hardware.
That said, if the intention is gaming, then by all means get the PC. Faster chipsets in bigger boxes, no denying that.
(EDIT- although, if you've got money to burn, the throw it at the Mac Pro... 32gb ram! .... it can be configured to the value of $32,000 AUD, it would be the ultimate gaming rig. who said macs weren't upgradeable? this things a work of art inside. thus the price tag...)

For me, whos not a serious gamer (hasnt yet touched crysis) a 24" 3.06ghz iMac running bootcamp and a 512mb gpu would be fine

Jeez, you're right, there. Same advantage games consoles get, which is why a PC of the same spec couldn't achieve that performance. The PC has the advantage of having -better- hardware, yeah, but it can't use it as well

PC's nowadays are dirt cheap, I can easily spot a gateway or something under 1k with 6 GB of ram, 500 GB hd, and some nVidia 9xxx card. It's scary, since mine used to be $800, and computers nowadays topple over it :

Yeah, I actually was so suprezied when I walked into futureshop and saw these monsters on for so cheap. I was confused and constantly looking around for the MASSIVE CLEARANCE SALE signs. but apparently computers are dirt cheap now... not that dirt is over a thousand dollars... nvm.
Anyways for people who say upgrade to XP from Vista. I actually really like Vista a lot more than XP and Vista never crashes for me.

I bought a Compaq Presario F700 from circuit city that had AMD 64 AthlonX2 dual-core processor TK-55 1.80 GHz, NVIDIA Graphics and included windows vista home premium and I was given a HP pavilion 7940 1GHz Intel pentium III processor 128 MB SDRAM memory 40.0 GB Ultra DMA hard drive CD-RW and DVD drives. I think I got a really good deal on the desktop and notebook. Desktop was free and notebook about $550.

The Mac Pro and MacBook Air are ridiculously overpriced. However their notebooks are on par with other vendors, and the iMac is actually cheaper than it's few competitors.
