Why choose RK Launcher over RocketDock?

I've been an avid user of RK Launcher for a long time and even developed several skins. I recently rediscovered RocketDock and have been using that exclusively for the past few days and absolutely love it.

My question is this: Is there a particular reason you have decided to stick with RK Launcher? I'm just curious. My thanks go out to the RK Launcher author.

My reasons for switching are:

1) Keep getting periodic DLL hook errors upon starting.

2) No longer under development.

3) No serious install package.

I'll stick to RK becacuse

- in overall it is the closest emnulation of mac dock

- it has one bounce of shortcut like in Mac

- it is faster than Rocket Dock

- its labels are more accurate

- it hasn't so huge spaces between applications' shortcuts.

I tried several times Rocket dock and everytime switched back to RK.

It has an exclusion list.

Thanks for the replies. What do you mean by an exclusion list?

FYI, I have personally found that RocketDock is nearly identical. At least on my laptop it is faster than RK Launcher. Labels are about the same for me except that RK Launcher would always try creating a shortcut to a link while RocketDock actually puts the right links in place for me. Not sure what you mean about huge spaces, alabanco. If you mean waiting time after launching an app, they seem to have fixed that since I last used it. That's one reason I was so surprised.

-by spaces I meant the space between two icons. it is too big.

-Labels are not the same. thats for sure.

-in RK the icons can bounce (jump) only once which I need. in Rocket dock the icon jumps like a crazy maniac.

- Rocket dock is not faster than RK. I don't know how you managed to see the opposite.

- about creacting shortcut to a link - there is an exclusion list.

It is too on my computer. RD turned to be the smoothest and fastest on my computer of all the docks I tried (OD, Y'z, Rk), which was the only reason why I switched from Rk to it in the first place.

And the number one reason:

Rk can use YzDocklets and ObjectDock Docklets untill there are more docklet developers to create docklets I wont switch.

Exclusion list is, when I i.e. have my task manager open and just want to minimize it to the taskbar, you can tell RK not to minimize it to the dock. In Rocketdock and Objectdock you have it in the dock. (This goes for Finderbar, Macclock, itunes, Windows defrag, ....). Some tasks I simply want to run, but when you open them to look something and minimize them to tray again, you cant get rid of them in the dock.

I like ObjectDock the best, personally. P:

For me I'm using all three dock types, Y'z, RD and RK. For general use it's got to be RK, I like the fact it doesn't have an installer, the same with Y'z. Making them very portable. I even run one from my USB drive. :D

The installer is one of the most annoying things, putting stuff in my registry etc I don't want, I only installed RD to try it out and never really got round to removing it, plus it's hidden.

As for resources for me RK is heavy but that's only because I run docklets from it, RD and Y'z sit about the same.

If push came to shove, I'd pick RK every time, even though I think development has all but ceased.

RocketDock (at least in version 1.3.5) allows to be installed as "portable", in such case it stores all settings in an .ini file in same path than RocketDock.exe, thus allowing to be in a pendrive or whatever portable device you want.

Personally I find RK Launcher faster, but also buggier, for e.g. when trying to drag an icon, it becomes crazy and the icon jumps all around the screen.

Also in last version it won't allow to have two or more instances of a docklet.

On the other hand, RocketDock doesn't support Yz docklets.

RK Launcher always shown Recycler or something like that as label for the Recycle Bin, instead RocketDock shows "Papelera de reciclaje" without any custom setting (my Windows is in spanish).

I prefer RocketDock, but your mileage may very, which is pretty undestandable as each one has it's pros and cons.

You can use a different recycle docklet my label says Trash, just go here and get one there are several to choose from.

While there you might consider signing up and posting your docklet there also.

I use the dock-that's-not-to-be-named!! :P

#491642

Objectdock is the best dock for Leopard emulation, but is too bloated, intrusive, and plus its shareware.

Rocketdock, i know nothing about.

RKLauncher will look nasty with reflective icons if you don't fix the margins.

RKLauncher's indicators must always touch the bottom of the screen.

RKLauncher's indicators cannot overlap icons.

Items in RKLauncher cannot touch the bottom of the screen (by items i mean icons and such)

There is a free version, the shareware version just lets you have multiple docks + tabbed docks on screen. The free version is just the normal dock.

What, is Raduking taking it up again or do you mean the project Schrom and Purry have started (by acquiring it's sources) ?

#491686

project Schrom and Purry have started

I'm hoping while they are in there they can fix a few things with the last version. I also believe he will be doing this in Radu's name.

We are going on in the dev in radus name. I got home today and I am just waiting for raud to come online in MSN and submit me the code. RK is going to be open source than, so everyone would be able to submit bug fixes or new features we are then going to add if they would make sense.

These are the current plans... stay tuned

Any news on this? Finally, did you got the source code? ^_^

#492706

RaduKing is not contactable again :( trying as hard as I can to contact him

#492996

Well. What about state of the code-getting process and making it open-source.

#493998

lol soo whats happening has it become open-source? is dev still continuing on it....im confused :(

#495653

Technically it's not became open source.

I believe a few members have managed to source the code from RK and they are working on a reflective version.

As there have not been any offical releases or updates since last August it is difficult to say the project has stopped. The only one who can confirm this will be RK himself.
