What would you like to see in a future Mac?

I thought it would be rather interesting to find out what consumers like I would like to see in future Apple products.

Some things I would like to see...

  • a larger screen in the MacBook line. 13.3" is just too small for my taste. I can't even stand 14.1". Perhaps a 15.4" addition or around there added to the line would make it a bit more appealing to me.
  • Low end Mac Pro. I would like a low end desktop machine, other than the Mac Mini / iMac. I like the Mac Pro because its the standard Tower + Monitor + Peripherals setup, similar to PCs. The problem with that is that the Mac Pro is more of a high end machine on Apple's part. Perhaps a reincarnation of the PowerMac series to have it serve as a lower-end model? {Think Dell Vostro}
  • Thinner Cinema Displays. Honestly I can't stand them. I like the aluminum and the beauty... but they're just TOO DAMN THICK! Move the buttons to the front, make them slim squares on the bottom, and you got a nicer display. 30" is a superb size, but you can't be too big!

I would like ADB High speed connection ports, and the PowerPC chip back.

#475644

I'd like to see mini dvd/cd support for my camera, louder speakers, more usb ports, and that would be it.

also more free apps.

#475647

Well I highly doubt they will switch back to PPC after all the success and accomplishments they achieved with Intel's i386 chips.

And if I can remember correctly they dropped ADB for DVI because of the better quality and performance, no?

But to say the most, ADB coming back is a interesting idea...enabling all the older Apple displays to be used on the new machines.

Well, I love PowerPC because you know, It was very innovative, and PCs dint use them.

I wish they had one old ADB port in all macs, and then 4 High speed ADB ports, they would be better than USB and Firewire, and only in the mac.

#475652

ADB = Apple Display Bus (?) correct?

#475653

ADB = Apple Display Bus (?) correct?

No, Its Apple Desktop Bus, its just like USB but you have to turn the Mac off first before you connect anything, but is really cool!

#475654

Oh I almost forgot! I want the classic Mac OS back and the apple colored plastics.

#475655

but you have to turn the Mac off first before you connect anything, but is really cool!

I think you are trying to say that it doesn't support plug&play? ;)

Oh I almost forgot! I want the classic Mac OS back and the apple colored plastics.

Apple colored plastics would be nice when ADDED to the current styles.

and perhaps the classic Mac OS would be back perhaps as a... free release as they did with System 6 and OS 7? Then release it for public use?

I know how you feel; I also am a classic goer, installing 98SE and DOSing up machines just because I thought it would be cool (and helluh it was :))

But if you want them to full blown include it on their machines... well I would have to say, keep dreaming :P

#475657

Adding the color plastics to current products was what exactly I had in mind too. The Mac OS should come back as how you said, it would be nice if the Linux community upgraded Mac OS 9.2, dont you think?

#475660

Interesting Concept.

#475667

Are you nuts?????

PowerPC can't run Windows, which is a serious selling point of Macs now. COME ON. It's the ONLY reason why I bought a Mac. Apple's market share would drop like a hot rock if they went back to PPC.

#475668

I agree. PowerPC would kill Apple. Moving to i386 was by far probably the best move they ever made.

#475669

I want mac to serve as time machine (no, no, not like one in leopard.. you know actual time machine).. so one can go back to certain time in past and be happy.

Beside that big feature... thinner Cinema Displays, Ultra-Portable Macbook Pro, Mac Pro without FB-DIMMs (not apple's fault actually), with wider selection of graphic cards, more aluminum goodness on exteriors and less plastic on interface (friggin mail.app), also female version of mac and pc in apple adverts and catherine-zeta jones with my purchase of any future mac.

Off the Topic and Outside mac : Capital punishment to anyone who like to have PPC back in mac just because it sounds cool and retro.

Mac Pro without FB-DIMMs

I don't really see a problem in that.

Also: mail.app is beautiful :P

Dude! No. just no.

#475680

ohh i love these threads, im surprised i didnt create it :P

Spec upgrades all round are always nice; but heres some ideas for new features;

Mac Mini

A dedicated media center operating system with a tightly integrated High definition TV/radio Tuner and ability to stream from other computers as well as store, record all digital media with no limitations.

I Think the mac mini should be the all-in-one device you put under the tv.

Want to show your friends that movie u taped? the family photos? play music through the stereo system?

and bein small its portable- just take the Mac mini round to show them.

They could even do away with the traditional OS and the mouse even and have a new (wireless) keyboard/remote... maybe even one with a iphone style touch screen where the buttons change depending on what screen your in.

iMac

Dual CD Drive/burner for fast copy. A better designed inside, like the original REV A iMac- its just plain cool, i dont care what ppl say.

Perhaps down the line, blue ray or HD player (which ever one 'wins' the format war).

Macbook

I sort of see the Macbook Pro vs Macbook, like iPod vs ipod Nano.

The macbook and nano are supposed to appeal to the younger generation and dare i say it, girls.

girls like colour. they dont want to pay the earth for specs they dont understand and they want small things coz they're cute.

so why not introduce a coloured aluminium shell to the macbook?

the rest of us 'older' professional geeks stick to the Macbook Pro and iPod (classic/5th gen) coz they have balls.

Mac Pro

One for under $2500 with the specs of the top of the line version :P JK

i don't want to sound like i'm bashing, but this makes absolutely no sense to me. do you know why apple moved away from ppc chips? they couldn't fit a g5 processor in a notebook. hooray for photoshop launching in 2 minutes and being limited to os x only applications!

as for ADB, there are standards for a reason. if ADB was only in macs, no one would want to give us peripherals. why make something for 4% of the market when you can use USB and get everyone else? what if i were to switch to a mac? i would have to buy a new camera, printer, and external hdd.

think before you post. >_>

I am Thinking when I post! moving to intel was a big problem, G3 and early G4 machines will not be compatible with leopard, many apps are not PPC compatible now, and thats going to increase, its a really terrible problem, people can not move to intel macs right away, and alot of them have G3 machines, so its a problem for many people...

#475707

the people who are buying them right now lose nothing. They get more. Like many people said, switching back to old things is redicolous!! if youre an old mac lover u have to get used to the new world... In ten years current imacs will be "retro". seriously, compare os9 to 10.5...

#475708

i don't care. The apple line is streamlined so no new machines should be made. In fact i resent the fact apple renamed the ipod 'classic' and decided to add a touch and a phone.

All i'd like to see is a high powered graphics card and possibly future windows editions support (although vista is a good start) as standard

I know that apple like to spring new updates onto us, but it would be nice to have some indication from the company itself when a large scale update is going to occur.

I want some of what you're smoking. Who said Leopard supporting G3 and early G4s would be a problem? Lets put it this way: you wouldn't expect Vista to run on 128MB of RAM and a 800MHz Celeron would you?

Okay, bad analogy; but you get what I'm getting at.

that's their fault they can't keep up with technology, not apples. why should apple support nearly 10 year old machines when ~80% of mac users are running G5 or better :o

do you refer to all the small things :P, LMFAO!.. no offense.. just a joke!

#475756

I would love to see a higher spec vid card for the mini... I get a poor frame rate with Celestia running some of the hi res textures.
