I just got home and going through various websites for complete Keynote coverage and apple site side by side for complete overview. Apple made it now hard to decide to though, Flash Storage is welcome... but 16GB capacity still less for some. For me even that's overkill (thanks to my very selective choice), but I know few people who're already full in their 60gig pods.
I think the best news today was $200 pricedrop in iPhone 8GB (now $399), and 4GB iPhones are discontinued but still selling till supplies last for $299. I think that makes it sweet deal. I'm trying to get someone to purchase 4gig iPhone for my GF... then it's a matter to waiting for proper Software unlock.
I think they way they integrated WiFi in iPod makes a lot sense, would make it more cooler if they offered Zune like sharing. All the other features put Zune to shame... iTunes store is definitely one step ahead of it, but would be killer if they would allow WiFi syncing (which Zune doesn't anyway). But then again, I think syncing the whole library over WiFi would seriously eat up the battery.

the flash drive issue is also something of a decision with me. 16GB...not enough.
but the 160GB is way more overshot than i thought, and i personally think that a 160GB hard drive is bit in the overdrive. I would've personally guessed 120GB maximum, but 160GB is really impressive.
And we were all saying that the new iPod Nano shots were ugly in the thread that predicted this one, but they actually dont look too bad. I might buy one.
Look pretty good. I hope they run smoothly cause the lag on my 5th gen really annoys me.
I think this was a huge disappointment. I see the ipod touch as pretty well worthless as you can get an iphone with 8 less gigs for the same price, this should have been the device with 160 gigs of storage. The fatty nano is ugly as all get out and is pretty lame. Overall I am pissed, I was thinking that I would be ordering a new ipod in the next weeks but I don't see anything I would buy right now. The classic has the storage but the same old screen, the touch has the screen but comes up very short on space, especially when getting a few vids on there. Sorry apple, but I think you are losing that magical touch.
I agree about the colors... definitely not upto apple's standards, I liked the earlier Nano colors rather (not that I care, I always prefer black, white or gray metal finish).
I agree also on 160GB, it's definitely extreme.... but then someone want to load it up with videos, they will love it. For me decision was simple about storage, Flash to go.
Basically, when I bought my first iPod (3G) 15gig and second one iPod (4.5G, color screen) 20gig, it was also a lot then for me, but I used it also as external drive. Now as flash memory is gone cheaper (thumbdrives), my 2GB stick + another 4GB stick suffice me more than enough. Considering that, I don't care about HDD based iPods anymore. I never bought 5G iPod cause on base model battery life was couple hours less than my 4.5G iPod... iPhone is sweet, I get both phone and iPod in one.
But I will still hold my purchase for iPhone and instead buy one for my GF, since she is looking for upgrading her phone and I just bought Moto Z6 (necessity, my k750i was drowned and burnt). I can live with Z6 for another year.
No offense holmes, but it wouldn't be smart to buy right now or in a few weeks, maybe in a month or two. There's always updates. The reason that Touch has such weak storage is because of its flash drive, which increases its durability and reliability, and costs more to make. I am definitely going to buy it once they boost up the space to a minimum of 30GB.
By the way, can flash drives be exact on space? Like not 27.8GB ~ 30GB, if you understand what i mean...
Theres not much wow factor going on for me. To be honest, dare I say it here, the nano doesn't look great, the ipod classic promises little apart from the 160gb storage, and I have a number of reservations about the touch, namely its small storage.
Personally i think a touch screen media player is impractical, might be cool at first but im sure the novelty will wear off. Im guessing the main selling point of it will be videos but with such small storage it kinda shoots itself in the foot.
EDIT: Up to 5 hours of video on iPod Touch, maybe im expecting too much but this is pathetic. You could get more out of a new PSP slim especially with the rumoured 32GB memory sticks coming out. Not to mention they look better and the screen is larger. For those of you saying 5 hours is reasonable, remember it says 'UPTO,' the most you can expect is 3 hours, or 4 being optimistic. Remember in the tests autobrightness was off, and it wouldnt surprise me if the sound was off. I would like to see how if and how well it would handle an AVI, with autobrightness and sound.

just take away everything cool about the iphone, add some stoarge. volia new ipod... nothing new or revolutionary.. but still kudos to apple cause I'm going to be picking one up.
Well... I just checked plugging in all the Flash Drives I had available right now... plus my cellphone's memory card.
...and, it's like what you said... 1.90GB for 2GB stick (and 952mb for 1GB microSD card).
Then it struck me, it's not memory medium's fault.... it's the FileSystem.
EDIT : Besides that... I fired up my word processor to write proper article about 20 mins ago. Haven't written a jack of word in it yet and I'm already knocking my head on my keyboard. I guess I'm gonna go crash now.... I'll wait till I get back fully on A-S and start doing proper newsposting again. Sorry and Thanks again for covering up.
coldwerturkey just stated that its a dumbed down version of the iphone and is nothing new yet still picking it up. Its things like this which force consumers to accept sub-par products because people still buy them. Hypothetically, tomorrow apple re-release the old gameboy with a huge apple logo, people would still buy it.
Yeah, flash drives also lose some capacity after being formatted.
And I hate the colors on the Nanos so much I don't even want to look at them. I've never owned an iPod, but I want that Touch baaad.

The new nano is as ugly as Donald Trump's hair. Really. Its not Nano anymore. If youre going to spend 250 on a nano, buy a video. the nano should have a) stayed music only, or b)music+video, but smaller.
the classic is blah. the only differences are a) the UI b)storage and c) appearance. Seems the same to me as the original Video.

OK, I figured this would be a nice place to rant on about the new iPods Steve introduced to the Apple line today. Il try and keep it short and sweet.
Anyone who hasnt seen the new products, www.apple.com.
First off, he introduced the new iTunes; which was exactly the same program, except you can make ringtones on it. Not only that, each ringtone costs you $0.99, thats right... you have to buy the actual song (costing you $0.99 in the first place) AND THEN pay another $0.99 on top of that to use it as a ringtone on thew new iPhone.
He then went on to say that today would be the day the 'entire range' of iPods would be replaced.
The first iPod to be replaced (which wasnt replaced at all) was the iPod Shuffle, which was just available in new colours.
Second of all was the iPod Nano.
I dont know if youve seen the pictures, but if your reading this and havent looked yet; I suggest doing so. The new iPod Nano looks like someone has sat on it. I really thought Apple was a company who cared about asthetics and thats what their selling point was, but this is one seriously UGLY looking MP3 player, by any standards.
Then there is the iPod 'Classic'.. which it has now been renamed. They decided to remove the extremely classy glass from the front panel of the iPod and replace it with brushed metal... it looks way less streamlined than the last.
All of this upset, only for Steve to make me all excited for the new iPod touch. This is a GREAT iPod, does everything I could ever want and more at a very nice cost. And then he hit me with it, the MAXIMUM capacity these iPods come in is 16GB! Thats barely enough to hold my stevie wonder collection, nevermind films and such.
He then went on to talk about a great new feature, which was that when you are in starbucks; the song playing in the shop will be accessable through your iPod. I know starbucks is a huge company; but who goes to starbucks to listen to music? My local starbucks is in a shopping center and you wouldnt even be able to hear music in it?! I just dont understand the logic behind it!
The main thing that has annoyed me, is they havent left ANY iPod in the range that is desirable to me both astheticly and in features.
I guess thats my rant over.

OK- I will admit the iPod touch is cool.... but everyone will be like; "hey, is that an iphone?"
Pretty much hit all my points there technominds. What were they thinking, the touch aside, the aesthetics of the new lineup is hideous. And there truly is no product in the lineup I am really interested in. I guess I will wait for the Cowon iAudio x7 and see what it looks like, or maybe the Archos 605, seems big though.
Why, why, why? is the ipod touch only 16 gigs, that is so stupid it almost hurts, sure to save battery life maybe, but it only gets upto 5 hours video with flash so whats the deal?
I think between this and those ugly new imacs that someone at apple has lost their mind. I am hardly a mac fan but have always appreciated their well thought out, aesthetically pleasing products, lately though I am unimpressed. They seem to have gotten a little too money hungry. Clearly subtracting from what could be great products, the touch for example, to keep sales up for another the iphone.
Definitely, i've already used about 19GB on my 30GB 5G iPod...16GB is sad.Then again, i'm sure that the flash would eventually become a reality. Thing is, since flash drives only have so many read/write cycles, it doesn't really increase the lifespan of the iPod at all :confused: which is rather pointless. The flash drive is basically there for constant protection against drops and water submerging, but what about the screen? Does it have the same scratch free interface? i really don't appreciate watching movies on a screen that looks like my cat's scratching board.

*I dont like that the interface on the classic and nano looks a little more 'dirty' and less clean. The original iPods had minimalism... the new one has a lot of litter...
* The rounded edges on the ipod classic and nano look... very *shudder* "Creative" like...
*Is that me or is the classic a little fatter than the 5th gen? It says sleeker but...
* The colours look very *shudder* zune like... all pastelly and yuk.
* The Touch (the name reminds me of the Creative Zen Touch...*shudder*) has built in Wi-Fi, to download music, a web browser... Thats cool... but its a lil too much like the iphone.
* The coverflow thing is wicked, the animations look truly sweet... but I dont like the way the previews take over half the menu screens, but I guess that could be optional.
* Bout time the iPod went from plastic to all metal though. In the preview videos, the ipod looks less yuk that in the pics. With its frosted metal look.
... O-K im beginning to crave it a bit now... my addiction is rising.

My two cents on all of this is on my blog. It's a long blog article, but I think it's worth the read. It covers a lot of this sort of stuff.
To be honest, I'm probably going to hold off on the iPod touch until next year, perhaps. I'm waiting to see if they will release a 40+ GB Touch. I may go with the 16, purely because I can pick and choose exactly what music I want on there. It will force me to be a little more selective of what I put on my iPod.
Shimmy: iPods can't read AVI files. And I'm currently running a 60GB 5th gen iPod, and I regularily get 5+ hours of battery life when watching videos. I keep my brightness a little lower than normal, and I play sound (obviously). I honestly haven't noticed a difference in battery life when my volume is at different levels.
I have an idea for an iPod Touch mod already. What i propose is that someone should buy an iPod touch and one of the 160/80gb hard drives that go in the classic. Once those are purchased open up the iPod touch and mod the hard drive into the back as best you can. Buy the deeper 8gb iPhone backplate and then pray it all fits in. Then restore the iPod in iTunes.
Voila! There you have it! The iPod 6.5Gen 160/80gb iPod. This is a working idea i think but the inserting of the hard drive will be heavily complicated and really expensive. If previous iPods have been converted to flash storage then the same can be true the other way round.
Btw for those who were keeping track, i finished my modded 4th Gen iPod 40gb hard drive and case mod months ago. I will try and update my thread with the pics as soon as i take some
