Tell me how this place would be anymore dead....guests can't post, and inactive members don't post anyway. So how would there be a decrease in posts? This place would be no more 'dead' than it is now...

googles ads are not frames nor iframes, its a simple link to an image,

i dont want guest off cause aquasoft had em off before and it sucked.

#45345

Really? If its an image, how come I cant click on it and do "Block Image" like I can with every other image in Firebird.

In fact, when I RightClick it says "Open this frame in new window".

Hmmm...how odd.

Heres the link to just the frame:

#45350

weird.. in Safari, when I right click it, I get the 'View Frame Source' option as well.. :huh:

#45351

hmm might be a frame oh well, just right click the image view its source copy teh url to that image then just block images to that url though you are not helping by doing that,

ok I changed my mind, i'll give this poll till friday, then if people really want guest off, i'll turn it off for 1 week see how things go,

#45360

yeah go ahead timan, you do a great job - lets close the gates on the guests they bring sars and crap like that :canadian:

I suggest you follow goku's ideas too :harp:

btw has anyone seen jed7.. er..goku lately ;) ?

#45391

For ad-blocking, get either

Webwasher

or

Outpost (Pro, preferrably).

Highly configurable little helpers.

On the topic:

Guests should somehow be allowed. I know I am often testing the waters before joining anywhere. Perhaps limit them to certain threads, like thge desktop thread? That would be like "hey look at this you can make your Desktop look like this if you join!".

Keeping Guests away would doom this board i guess. Little to no influx of new members.

Sorry, It looks like I made sure I was going to be misunderstood. Heck, thinking b4 writing has some advantages.

Well, I do think it is worth it to let this page display ads if it keeps the site running. Most of the time, I do not see any ads at all or do not notice that they should be missing simply because I am using an ad-blocker (see above). Same goes for pop-ups, they can be extremely efficiently be blocked, perhaps even better than ads.

However, since the proggies mentioned above are so highly configurable, you can choose to let certain pages display ads and others not.

Thats what I recommend. Let Aqua-soft.org display ads, block others where you dont want them. Now that I know about them I actually let them be displayed (at home that is, at work i dont have admin privileges on this &(§$%(&%§ NT 4.0 machine).

regarding the ads, keep em and if thats the best we can have and isnt possible to remove than i say go for it. People, please cooperate with the forum demands and hit the ads every once in a while.

@master_goku:

hrrm, um how dare you register with my name... uh ill have to delete your account :godpunk:

@timmie:

Yeah i just wanted to vote an extra no on this poll ^_^ did i violate any rules? :harp:

#45412

I voted no. Guests should only be able to access the text bits of the forum. The attached files and possibly app releases should be unavailable unless they register. The thing about people not contributing to the site is harsh though. I don't (yet) have the skill to contribute in any fashion to this site although I participate where I can. As long as users try to join in then they should be welomed.

#45420

let guests lurk they arent botherin you sheesh, just disable images etc. mostly likey theyd like to sign up to see what else we got. :woot:

#45471

Can any of you tell me why it is a good idea to let them lurk...

Better yet, what purpose do they serve?

They contribute nothing.

Besides, now we have ads because we have to start paying for the site.

Funny how when I mentioned this idea, it got shot down.

Also funny is how i complained about people using up bandwidth and was told i was full of sh##, and now, ALL OF THE SUDDEN, we need ads to keep afloat.

Hmm...

#45485

They are good to lurk around to get new members here. Poeple who first like to have a look around.

Maybe our understanding of "lurk" is different. For me, this does include that they, for example, may not download anything ro may not see certain pics uploaded or the like.

Basically, its all very easy: no new members - this place goes down. I do support the control of influx of new people, and whatever is necessesary to keep the place going, but it my opinion (!) that guests should be allowed to lurk around. i can live with it if anyone thinks different and if a different decision is made :) .

Thats because you don't scare people Duckie. Seriously, I respect you, but would you be afraid of a Duckie? A cute little Duckie? Ernies cute little rubber Duckie?

Sorry, I'm not.

Now a dead zombie is something else all-together. People think of the undead, night of the living dead, brain slurping flesh eating hordes. Women screaming and men cowering in dark corners, waiting for the end to come.

If you like, I'll be happy to make up a new nick for you...The Dead Duckie perhaps?

:lol::lol:

Sorry to disappoint you, but I have read too much Terry Pratchett to take undead seriously :lol: .

Taha's Avatar is still the most scary. Too bad he seems to have removed his sig, it ROCKED.
