everyone is forgetting to mention the very stylish way ichat does webcam (which includes 4 way capabilties in a coverflow style).
well I haven't followed this thread so I don't really know what's been going on (too lazy to read all these posts) but I'm almost certain that Apple will not port iChat over to Windows, this is mainly because
1. It won't help Apple to gain any profit/$$; sure one could always say it will drive people to the Mac platform but it is not entirely true, people don't just switch to Mac because they've used iTunes do they?
2. iChat relies on CoreImage/CoreAnimation for its video(/audio?) features and these technologies are Mac only, so if Apple were to port iChat, they would also have to port CoreImage, which maybe not possible due to the difference in terms of architecture and blabla between Windows and OSX, even if it was possible it would require a lot of effort, I don't believe they would spend that much effort on a product that doesn't bring them much, if not any profit/market share.

I also couldn't imagine why Apple would create iChat for Windows. The only possibility i could think of is if by some stroke of genius, Apple creates a unique hardware interface that so enticing to the world and would require the use of iChat only.

because it sux that ichat users can only talk to other mac users. (They can talk to other msn users via jabber but its not worth the bother).
its exactly why they brought the iPod/iTunes to windows, because to be an iPod user, you had to be a mac user and not everyone wanted to do that.
I would like to use iChat, but I dont want to buy all my friends a mac. Simple as that.

yep but the difference between ipod/itunes and ichat is that porting itunes to windows actually boots iPod's sales while porting iChat wouldn't bring them anything, more .mac subscribers? I don't think so...
What I really want is support for MSN and Yahoo Messenger within iChat, now that is more realistic...
I'm 95% sure that apple doesn't have the legal rights to release iChat for windows. iChat is fully endorsed by AIM, and that's probably because that means they don't have to waste money developing AIM for Mac anymore. However, if Apple were to encroach on their windows market, they'd probably serve them with a cease and desist.
AFAIK, AIM is still developing their own Mac client
also, there are lots of IM clients out there that support AIM such as adium, pidgin, miranda, proteus blablabla so i don't think there would be any legal issue to release a new AIM client...

apple should make OSX work with "normal PC's", mac's now work with every os out there, it seems only fair it should go the other way around as well...
