I can do that with my Intel Core Duo iMac and it runs smoothly. 8 cores is necessary for much heavier operations.

Intel on Thursday solved the mystery behind the 3GHz, quad-core Xeon found in Apple's new eight-core Mac Pro.
The processor had triggered confusion for those keeping a close eye on Intel's workstation offerings, as it fell outside of Intel's often well-defined roadmap and was nowhere to be seen on the chipmaker's Xeon product site. Discussions with the company itself, however, quickly revealed that Apple had repeated the tactic behind its Apple TV device and requested a special chip to accommodate its special needs -- in this case, the Xeon 5365. The Mac Pro maker successfully preempted Intel's official plans by persuading it to release a one-off processor at the high clock speed.
"We are indeed shipping a 3.0GHz Xeon version," Bill Kircos from Intel said. "For now, the product is in limited production and Apple has chosen to adopt it. We will introduce another 3.0GHz Xeon SKU later on as well."
Intel's line officially ends with the quad-core Xeon 5355, which had been released as part of the 5300 series in November but has remained locked at a 2.66GHz maximum speed until today. The Mac Pro is so far the only known professional workstation to have the 5365 model, making it potentially the fastest of its kind until larger quantities of the chip leave Intel's factories.

Dell has been selling Dual Quad Core Xeon (2.66 GHz) systems for months now. We have two here at work. Impressive, but pricey. nearly $8k each.

I talked to a friend of mine across town at Intel and he said other PC makers will be getting them shortly.
hmmmm... now that mention dell, I remember seeing it once over their website. Didn't get time to go through it properly, so it must have slipped my mind.
Anyway, first Batch of 3 GHz chips... that's another first for apple, still !!
They've had 3GHz chips since the first Mac Pro.

has anyone heard about or seen the 80 core processor ? i was reading about it in a music production mag and they said "It features a whopping 80 cores. Unviled at the most recent Intel Developers Conference, the processor is capable of shifting a terabyte of data a second and can run all cores at 3.16GHz. Don't start salivating just yet, though - Intel reckon it'll be 5 years before it reaches marketplace". not for me though cause i wouldn't need half it so it would be a waste of money for me i reckon.
The 80 core mammoth of Intel is not necessarily going to make it to production level, even if it does.. it's highly unlikely will be seen in desktops or even workstation. As far as I remember reading, it was something Intel wanted to do just to see if it can be done.
When Dual cores started hitting the market, there was lot of licensing issues raised by software manufacturers (even crying Oracle was heard screaming "Foul, Foul" first)... imagine what they would over 80 core chip.. lol. Anyways, if that chip ever gets in Market... specially in coming 5 years, it would only make sense if majority of software is fully Multi-core aware.

wow Amazing 8 Core Intel Xeon Mac... a HUGE improvement from the Crappy ones 3 years ago lol... Apple is doing well, i hope they make a version where you can install os x.. or whatever it will be called on a PC, I'd buy it then 'cause i wouldn't have to spend $3000 on a new mac computer
yeah if you could get os x on a pc i would probably buy it as well...i wonder why they haven't done a pc version because you can get windows for mac. there is a way to get os x on a pc but none of the hardware is supported so it's pointless.
