holy hell a 8-core MBP?! guess whos sellin' my ol' one!
personally though, i am definatly going to get one, as soon as we sell my current MP. (probably gonna keep all 4 of the Hard Drives. and sell everything else) Then, buy the new mac pro with no HDs, and put these ones in. haha! good idea for an upgrade for ppl who dont want to start all over again....

It's about time Apple started making these.
"Other" manufacturers have had these on the market for months now.
They'll never get the power consumption down enough to put this in to a laptop though.
meh. probably not, but im willing to have it in my MBP. even single dual core Xeon processors in a MPB would be insanly better than the current Intel Core 2 Duos
I am actually saving up to get a MBP, would you guys that already have one recommend it even if Apple doesn't bump it up to quad core level?
Apple couldn't bump the MBP to a quad core for one reasons.
The chip doesn't exist for the mobile platform.
Intel has already stated that the Xeon processor will never be available for the mobile platform.
You're already close with the Core 2 Duo.
The only major difference is the cache size (2 MB per core on the Core 2 Duo vs. 4 MB per core on the Quad Core Xeon) and the mobile Core 2 Duo's FSB runs at half the speed (667 MHz) of the Xeon and the desktop version of the Core 2 Duo (1066 MHz).
This is done to reduce heat and power consumption.
Intel may make a mobile version of the Core 2 Duo Quad CPU, but it still has similar limitations of the Xeon Quad Core. Heat and power consumption.
In fact, Intel has officially stated that Quad-Core mobile chipset is in the works... offcourse it won't be blessed with gig of FSB (obviously to keep overall TDP in limits).... but the bottomline is that it won't be long we see Quad-Core notebooks.
But, I think we would hardly see Quad-Core clad notebook in sub-15" category... cause such a notebook will be ideal for mobile workstation (17" and maybe 15.4"), also overall battery life will take a hit compare to portable notebooks.

Oh, yeah... interestingly enough. I just spec'd up a Mac Pro to the fullest, and it's about the same price as it used to be. The only difference is that now it comes with double the processor core count.

l just recently sold my mac mini, 23-inch apple display, wireless keyboard, mighty mouse, iSight, 30g ipod all for $1400 and last summer l sold my dell xps for $1500 and that should be able to pay half of 8-core MacPro, my only question is why didn't apple change the video cards? ive been hearing rumors about ATi R600 might be comings to the MacPro? but don't know if it true or not? what happen to the blu-ray option? thay lowered the price on the displays the 30-inch is now only $1799, maybe apple will coming out with new displays also, maybe that's the reason thay lowered the price. ive been saving up sense jan 06 to buy a MacPro and a 30-inch Apple display but just might wait little more until apple release leopard. Right now i'm just using my PS3 for internet and email, but this just temporary until i get my new MacPro setup.

Yes.... Apple has revamped it pricing over mac pros. Another cut come from new display pricing.
I have just frantically searched intel and google to find any information about a Core 2 Quad mobile processor, all I could find is a project codename: Silverthorne. Someone might could find out some more about this, or even if it is the architecture we are hoping for.
Unless your into some serious rendering or production these 8 core machines are about as much use as a chocolate fire guard.
You would be better off buying the quad 3.0ghz then at a later stage upgrading by purchasing the chips seperately (They will slot straight in and boot without an issue just like they'd always been there)
Your average user really isn't gonna see any difference between the quads and the 8-Cores. The applications that utilise this sort of hardware are serious.. the only 'Mainstream' App that may see real benefit is CS3.
In Addition I don't believe these Mac Pros to be a 'Significant' Update I think its a filler update before Leopard to coincide with CS3 Upgrade... I would put money on a revision in June with the launch of Leopard.

I think that comment definitely holds some weight. I mean, when they through the Intel processors in, not a single computer design changed.
Mac Pro - looks exactly like PowerMac G5
iMac - looks like the old iMac G5 with iSight
Mac Mini - looks like the old G4 Mac Mini
MacBook - looks almost exactly like the iBook, but with a black casing option
MacBook Pro - looks almost exactly like the PowerBook

Why the hell would you want a server-orientated chip in a notebook? And one with eight cores at that.
Oh and MM3, can you get us some screenshots of you trying to use up all those 8 cores when you get it, mmmk? I'm interested to see how anyone other than some kind of creative studio can consider an 8-core computer a worthwhile purchase.

All of those are dependent on RAM, not processing, with the exception of LimeWire which simply sucks.
You are only, ONLY using your processor heavily if you're encoding video, running filters in Photoshop, rendering something in 3D, etc. Unless it has a progress bar attached to it, it probably isn't using your processor much.

4 cores, maybe, but 8... ridiculous waste. If you need that much processing power, you should NOT be doing it on a laptop.
If Intel ever gets the Core 2 Duo Quad core CPU running on the mobile platform (yes, I know they are working on it, but it ain't here yet), it will only be one CPU on the board.
The heat generated but 4 cores is pretty hot... 8 would be insane.
Let's not forget the power consumption as well.
The only way they could make it work would be to slow the CPU's down and reduced FSB speeds.

i regularly compress video for my ipod, i get through a lot because i don't have space to store every one of my videos converted.
Having a P4 with hyperthreading definately helps stop the computer freeze, but even then its usually a RAM (or lack thereof) based problem.
Mm3, if you want to really tax the processor try converting 8 videos at once (with a separate processor affinity, naturally), while compressing an ntfs drive and at the same time compressing 500MB worth of .wav files using 7-zip.
Finally if you want to test it further, try converting a nice 5 minute video into .gif frames (although that kills my RAM more)
oh. i guess then i probably wont be using the 8cores then. o well! i still have them dont i? haha!
