Looking at the news these past few weeks on the issue of DRM and I was wondering..what do you think of it?
In my opinon, I would rather not have it exist because I would like to be able to download media from different sources online (even though I dont and I mainly use iTunes). I guess DRM will be around for a while unless there can be something done about piracy...
I can't stand it right now cause it prevents me from subscribing to music subscription services while being on a mac... 10$ a month for unlimited music = nice, compared to 99cent bull shit.

I love it when I can't use music I played for in any way I want.

I get kind of annoyed when people give me iTunes giftcards, mainly because all gift cards stink, and the DRM makes it worse. But, I just buy movies with those.

CD's never have DRM why should songs you buy off the internet?
I think maybe, if not all companies want to adopt the "DRM free", then Jobs should allow specific songs to be "DRM free" and advertised as such. This would make those songs more popular and soon enough the record companies would become completely DRM free.
Although- in all fairness, if some of us run 'limewire' (or Kazaa or the like...) for legitimate sharing purposes (yeah right) then it makes sharing these unprotected songs a lot easier... no need to even rip from a cd, they're just there on the computer. If you haven't set your sharing folder up prpperly then you could mistakably share copyrighted songs ilegally by mistake.
SO its understandable why record companies are reluctant.

I also totally agree with jobs. DRM is a waste of time and money. Ya it protects copyrighted music, just until someone puts it on a CD and re-rips it. On the topic of music piracy, they might as well give that fight up to, there are so many different ways and places to get music from that its a pointless battle...
Having DRM on electronic media, I have begun to prefer CD's as opposed to electronic files of CDs from iTunes. At least having the actual CD would allow me to have the freedom that I want, while also having the pleasure of the experience that they give (unwrapping and opening them).
Plus, if I want a movie, I can buy the actual DVD. As for episodes, I'm stuck there...

I don't think it will help at all.
If artists, and a lot of other important people in industries related to DRM were publicly against it, maybe something would happen.

CDs actually can have DRM, its just really uncommon.

CD's did have DRM. But Philips (owner of the Red Book standard) started to crack down because it was making the CD's sometimes incompatible with CD players. So the CD producer either had to ditch the DRM, or not display the "Compact Disk Digital Audio" logo (which symbolizes that you can trust it to play on any CD player) on their products. So if a CD does not have the logo, it's probably because it has DRM.
Hate it, I buy my products (unless they're really that good that the developer completly deserves the money even though it has DRM in their product. Supreme Commander for example) based on if they have DRM or not.

As I said, I think some companies should try putting on DRM free content even if it costs a little more than DRM content.

my point is that, to make profit the record companies should charge a little more for DRM free content.
I would pay an extra 20cents or so for DRM free music, wouldnt you?...
and that 20 cents or so could act as a little bit of a buffer to piracy- piracy robs music companies of $$$, DRM free music is easier to pirate, thus it should cost more to make up for any piracy that does occur.

that said, I own an iPod... and if my internet was faster, I'd use the itunes store, and would be OK buying DRM protected content.
I dont buy music online. I find it easier to go into a cd shop and buy a whole album rather than wait for a whole album to download in itunes.
But I understand that not everybody wants to use only an ipod, one computer, one media player... some people want to mix it up a bit, have things a little more cross compatible.

There's some level that you're just going to have to accept. Currently, I agree with you and think that level is too strict. However, I don't think DRM will ever completely disappear.

I wasnt trying to relate that to society or anything... im just saying that why should we have to buy our songs, mp3 player and music rights all from the same place just to have it work?
if we pay for something it should work reguardless of what we use it on or with... atm its like a communist system, where the brand of player we own begins to own an ever increasing portion of our digital lives... if that makes any sense?... sorry just trying to relate it somehow to your odd statement.

no probs... hehehe.... i read it thru three times and was still like "wha...?"...
but yeah perhaps ur right, perhaps drm will never completely go away. but i dont think Apple will settle for an in between solution.... either they keep it tightly locked and secure (songs bought from itunes with DRM will only ever work on iPods) or they abolish it completely (and allow for all mp3 players,media players and potentially piracy).
