Does Vista fall short of being a next gen OS?

hi,

what is so great about vista?

right, new look /new UI called aero.

yeah, search function and sidebar..

new file system? nope..

hmm... acctually nothing new stuff. well, if i want a good looking UI i 'll buy a mac.

search function? I still CAN handle the search funktion in xp. who can't?

sidebar? well i've a 15" laptop screen. my desktop is getting smaller with this thing.

security? xp firewall, right browser, nat-router and BRAIN.

why do i need 256mb for a graphik card, 1 gb of ram just for a smoth work of the operating system?

well, think if we have 1gb of ram and so on and run full vista, whats for the other heavy programs like photoshop?

than we need mooooore hardware?

better xp/linux or mac for now.

@CyberTeddy... sounds like you have not USED Vista.

You do not NEED a 256 MB, high end graphics card to run Aero... I'm using a 128 MB ATI X600 and it works flawlessly. Not even close to being considered a top of the line or even a high-end video card.

I do have 1 GB of ram, but anything less is pointless... even on a Mac,

Again... there are a ton of NEW features and functions. USE it for a week and give it a honest run through.

No, I'm not an MS fanboy either... There are portions of Vista that are stupid... I HATE the control panel changes... it went from intuitive to confusing. Same with display settings... the XP way worked just fine. So it does take getting used too.

Like I stated earlier... Good, but not finished.

But it's still a ton better than XP when it comes to process isolation, security and system stability.

I personally think MS should have gone the Apple route, they should have stripped all the backward compatibility out of it (pre-XP). Or at least reduced it significantly. That would have eliminated a ton of overhead. Had they done that though, they would have lost any hopes of their largest user base choosing to upgrade.

Unlike OS X, Windows has a huge user base that expects their old programs to run. It's because of this expectation from the CONSUMER that Windows will always have it's fair share of issues.

Apple just said screw the CONSUMER and dropped compatibility for older programs.

#441274

no, i havn't used vista yet..

you say it works fine with 128mb video card.

well, i am not willing to buy a new computer, because MS released a new OS (and by the way, i am just a student.. you know how "poor" the most of them are).

my desktop computer has 64 mb video, 40gb HDD, 1.3 Ghz celeron CPU and 1 gb of ram.

my laptop (its one year old!) has 32 mb video (shared memory), 40 gb HDD, 1.3 Ghz celeron an 512 mb ram.

for that work i do, those computers are great to me (surfing, mail, litte photo editing, web programming, java programming).

why do i need a new OS with a new UI for e.g. flip 3D?

ok, security is a point! but the rest?

#441300

Nobody said you HAD to upgrade. I know what it's like to be a poor student. It sucks.

Your hardware may not run Vista Ultimate, but it will run Vista Home (no Aero UI) just fine.

And your laptop is more than 1 year old. Intel has produced a 1.3 GHz Celeron chip in years.

You may have purchased it a year ago, but I suspect it's an '04 or '05 model.

My work laptop (IBM T43) only has 64MB video (ATI Mobility Radeon X300) and a 1.8 GHz Centrino (Pentium M) CPU and it can run the Aero UI. It's a bit sluggish on the flip 3-D stuff though.

Having 1.5 GB of ram does help. ;)

#441303

Nobody said you HAD to upgrade.

sooner or later.. well, more later.

those who want to run new(er) programs they 've to upgrade.

today there are programs out which needs at least the SP2 of xp.

development/support for older programs/OS will stop and than?

we 've to upgrade, right?

Having 1.5 GB of ram does help.

so much ram just for an OS? hmmm.. i don't know...

#441309

I think vista fell short of the revolutionary OS. Whereas Longhorn that was the revolutionary OS but they ditched it.

#441311

1.5 GB is not a ton of ram. I use Photo Shop as well as Virtual PC 2007 RC1 (for Vista), so the extra memory is required for the VM's.

Really though, 1 GB of ram is practically standard these days.

rjohnstone jumps in front of m$ vista while a massive number of ignorant xp, linux and apple fanboys advance upon him.

he raises his shield and prepares to fight them ALL off with his massive sword of truth.

LOL :P

I just hate it when people make comments about something they have never used.

Looking at screen shots and reading blogs about Vista are a far cry from USING it.

I've been using the released product everyday since it was released to business partners back in November. There are way too many changes to list off the top of my head, but there are a lot of changes that have been made under the hood.

I'm still trying to figure out all the little quirks.

I did finally get an answer about why they broke up some of the Control Panel components. They did this to make setting domain based policies more efficient and directed. Makes sense from a business perspective. Sucks for home users though, but coding two different versions of the CP would have been a waste of resources.

The point was to make Vista more modular as compared to XP, which had a more "all or nothing" approach to configuring domain based policies.

Those who administer AD domains and set/define GPO's and OU policies know what I'm talking about.

BitLocker is cool as hell. Steel my pc and try and get the data off my drive... ain't gonna happen.

I testd this by enabling it on my PC and then pulled the drive and installed it in another PC. The data was not accessible. Every Windows admin knows the old trick for getting data off a HD without knowing the account info. Just pull the drive and put it in another PC as a slave, boot to your OS and you can know see everything on the other drive. Not possible anymore with BitLocker.

Of course you have to have a TPM module built into the MB for it to work, so yea... a MB upgrade would be required if you wanted to use the feature.

All new PC's now have this, including Macs :P, so it will be a non-issue in the long run.

Longhorn is/was Vista's codename (just clarifying any confusion) but they stripped so much out of it before it became vista.

#441340

Overall, I think Vista is a very good OS, especially when compared to Windows XP. It looks better, it works better, and its more secure, since it's built atop Server 2003. Is it better than Mac OS X? That's a matter of opinion. Some people love Windows, some hate it. Personally, I think Vista is better at some things than OS X is, and vice versa.

#441498

LOL... what?!? Built on what... Dude, step away from the computer and put down the crack pipe.

Not even close to being an accurate statement.

Server 2003 is based on the XP kernel.

2000 = Windows 5.0 - XP = Windows 5.1 - 2003 = Windows 5.2

Vista - Windows 6.0

Longhorn server is based on the Vista kernel.

I don't do crack or any drugs.

Faced with ongoing delays and concerns about feature creep, Microsoft announced on August 27, 2004 that it was making significant changes. "Longhorn" development basically started afresh, building on the Windows Server 2003 codebase, and re-incorporating only the features that would be intended for an actual operating system release. Some previously announced features, such as WinFS and NGSCB, were dropped or postponed, and a new software development methodology called the "Security Development Lifecycle" was incorporated in an effort to address concerns with the security of the Windows codebase.

I dunno how accurate this info is, but that's what I based my comment on.

Hmm... I was quite sure that Vista had both 32-bit and 64-bit applications available. I guess this isn't the case, after all.

#441681

It's both 32 bit and 64 bit.

As for Wiki entries, I take all of those with a grain of salt since anyone an update them.

Next time, go to the horses mouth... hit MSDN.

#441691

Agreed... I tend to feel that Vista's explorer is better than OSX's finder.

Where iLife (iphoto, itunes, iMovie) is better than Windows' lot (photo gallery, media player etc etc)

Something I've noticed, is that both OS' work on fundamentally different ways of organisation.

Ask any typical mac user how they sort thier music- They will say iTunes.

Ask any typical PC user how they sort thier music- They will say 'in folders, duh'

This is where it comes down to personal preference... I prefer to use a specialised program to do the work, such as iTunes which has specific music only settings (eg- easily editable artist, album metadata)

Sure, Windows media player you can do this, but in terms of library organisation its just not as polished and works better as just a "player" rather than a library "jukebox" concept ... most would just prefer just to use explorer.

#441800

imagine if microsoft produced 2 versions of the operating system, one which cut out all of the backwards compatibility and was a brand new os from the ground up, with programs that also cut out this compatibility (eg, no more 'save as office 97'), and the other one would be this version, vista.

i know it'd cost them more (vista cost 10bn apparently) but they'd gain some respect from the idiots who claim windows is bloated, and the people who wish for a fast, new operating system with new programs would have a difficult choice between linux, osx and windows...

for businesses, if they upgraded at the same time, compatibility shouldn't be too much of a problem since all the files, records etc. would be readable, and new computer users would also cut out the overhead/bloat.

#441890

Although I do love aero, I find the Vista UI to be amazingly distracting. OS X is beautiful too, but it seems to have a calm, "zen-like" quality. Windows needs to use an advanced EFI, hide all that kernel crap at start-up, and clean up directories and files that make up the OS. Really, Windows has a ton of potential, and everyone thinks its already living to its potential. Why? Because they don't know any better. They need to start experiencing other OS's and learning the flaws of Windows, then be the judge.

No way, man! I just found my old Oregon Trail and Amazon Trail CDs...works perfectly in XP! I could never give that up, hehe.

#442034

UPDATE- Microsoft plans to release its next OS in 09, to be called Vienna.

It will contain many of the features missing from Vista such as a revamped file system (WinFS) and a "new user interface paradigm" (whatever that means).

Vista was a compromise due to what microft calls a "limited time frame" (*Cough bullcrap *cough*) of five years... two and a half they say due to the fact they had to release XP SP2... Vienna is likely to be released in under two years.

(^how logical).

Find all the goss, news and opinions at google news;

#442154

levi, i see your point, and yet i sympathise with microsoft.

After all, how long would it take you to write a couple of million lines of code and debug them? i find 100 line programs a ***** as it is!

#442162

So what will be the coolest new feature in Vienna?

According to Fathi, that's still being worked out. "We're going to look at a fundamental piece of enabling technology. Maybe its hypervisors, I don't know what it is," he said. "Maybe it's a new user interface paradigm for consumers."

...in Simple English :

"We are going to wait till Apple launch their OS11, do our Me Too routine alongside... I don't know what it's going to have but our copiers are fully operational so we will take it from there.. yeh.

Maybe we will do major interface change, so that it doesn't look like Mac OS ripoff... and major interface change will confuse most of our users and they will go all like... WOW, look it has no start menu."

#442176

Right, MS ripped off Apple, of course. There are striking simularities, for instance OS X has a brushed metal effect for finder wile Vista has a Glass effect for explorer. Without any doubt it was a ripoff!

Oh and lets not get started with the icons! They where designed by the same person if im not mistaken; both Vista and OS X, HOW DARE HE DO SUCH A THING!

Really guys, try it out, and I dont mean load it up and mess around for 5 minutes I mean REALLY try it out.

I have tried OS X 10.4.x, Linux (Mandrake and RedHat), Windows Vista, Xp, and so on. I find Windows to always be the better, OS X is not meant for doing much other than graphical work, where Windows has gaming, corporate software, and much more. Yeah yeah you can game on OS X; BY USING WINDOWS XP THRU BOOTCAMP!

It comes down to a personal preference. I just hate how people put down Vista wile they probably spent a total of 5 minutes and walked away from it, or no time at all.

#442183

@ asty

Your right. The same guy that created graphical work for apple, was commisioned by Microsoft for Vista. Does that mean that Microsoft ripped apple? No, it just means they appreciate the talents of an artist and not what apple created. Employ an artist to create something for you and it will have there idenitity stamped on it, hence vista has similar elements to OSX. But think about it, who really gives a rats ass if Vista and OSX look the same? big deal. WOW. You stick with you OS and others will stick with their's. Go and bug Kellogs cause there cornflakes are just Bran flakes recoloured.
