Does Vista fall short of being a next gen OS?

Call me a fanboy.... and I do have a slight feeling this could result in such a war, but try and see the logic what im trying to say...

I DONT want to bring Leopard and OSX into this equation, but I tend to feel Microsoft didnt go as all out as they could have with Vista.

IMHO

It feels like Windows Me or Windows 2000 all over again. Both of these had some great ideas but fell short of being something solid and revolutionary

-many people stuck with Windows 98, till Microsoft fixed the bugs...

Then Windows Xp came along, it was a solid OS- practical, fast, simple and was easier on the eye (compared to what was previous).

Most people now are like "Meh"... People will like its new flashy features.. but they aren't revolutionary.

There are some good things- such as Direct X 10, flashy interface (so sick of Luna, soon we will hate Aero too), search features, a revised explorer (probably the best part), and... what else major? seriously.

Its Windows XP with a sugar coating... and all the annoyance stickiness that goes with it.

I disagree with people who say Vista is a complete overhaul and that its been given a completely new "core"...theres remnants (and annoyances) of XP scattered throughout Vista, all you need to do is look past the glossy interface and see that its inconsistant.

People are also saying that this is the last Windows OS ever (hell no), I think within two years or so there will be a tight revision and overhaul... What do you think?

It's a nice compared to XP, it just needs too much stuff to run properly.

I guess if you changed the VS to Windows XP, then people might think it was XP. Talk about perfect XP emulation on Vista! :P

#441071

I thought 2000 was regarded as fairly solid.

#441072

Yea I agree with NC.

I really missed 2000 when I upgraded to Xp.

#441073

Compared to XP, it's decent

Compared to OS X, it's a laughing stock. The aero UI is distractive and pointless...

Files are still all over the place, it's a mess. Check the system folder of OS X and check any Windows system. I can tell what does what in one...but don't know what revgsr3621.dll does. :|

Really?... hmm I stuck with 98... I did upgrade but had vast problems with drivers and hardware and so i went back (and let me tell you, rolling back from 2000 to 98 was hell)... but when XP came out, using the same hardware Windows ran flawlessly (even if a little slow, we ended up upgrading).

Well... umm please no flaming, we dont want to start that debate. but I do agree, heirachy organisation for both XP and Vista is not a strong point.

WE DO HAVE A VISTA DISCUSSION FORUM...

Oh, and I'll tell you when I get it. ;)

sorry.... I thought the Vista forum, was for UI related discussion only... ie- relating directly to Aero and theming...

thanx for moving. I dont expect u to be my nanny ;)

even tought some major features were droped, i think its a very good os; but this is a-s we´ll always hate ms :P

without question :P

#441082

No complaints here... it's exactly what I expected it to be.

Good, but unfinished. Hopefully SP1 will add the features that were dropped like WINFS.

There are some annoying things they did for the sake of backward compatibility.

The folder structure is one of them.

#441083

After like 5 years (is it?) i was expecting at least something original but seems to me what ms did was just take ideas from a few customization shareware/freeware apps available for xp and integrated them more into the shell it self and all that did is made it run smoother than a customization-bloated xp setup.

It still has that dissaranged, stuff here stuff there microsoft feeling. There is so much text and badly lookin/placed interface elements all over the gui. I had a headache following my vista testing pc cause of no simplicity in the interface. The other headache came from no drivers support and ati drivers beeing buggy, explorer crashing and other stuff. It was XP first time test all over again without sp1.

The only good thing with vista for me would be the security implemented into the os against the unexperienced human factor. When it comes to inovation in interaction with a pc microsoft has failed as usual and left it to us once again to do something about it.

Going from a clean xp install to a clean vista (fully functional) install wud be a semi-WOW but after beeing exposed to what other Os's do out of the box vista is just a small "Oh.." for me.

Keep in mind there was a code-reset halfway through the project. For all the trouble this project went through, Vista is a fairly impressive OS.

@Levi: How can you say that Vista is XP with sugar-coating? Have you seen this?

#441124

I believe that the only real thing that I would WANT on XP would be the "Search" (basically the Windows copy of Spotlight). Other than that, the "Pearl" that reaplaced the "Start" button is too small, i am SURE it takes a HUGE graphics card to manage all the fancy smanchy stuff it has, and plus, it will need a gazillion updates.

#441130

I find it's ugly, the default icons are ugly, the transperancy is to distractive (cool the first time, but later on, "meh..") and i also HATE how the toolbars and everything is revolved around IE 7 (yuck :(). It looks especially weird when i use firefox instead of IE... i also hate...Vista...like...as a whole lmao.

Leopard = pwnage.

#441134

i really like vista, i just had a bad experience of it eating my resources.

i got this computer just before xp service pack 2 came out, it could run xp flawlessly and run almost every resource intensive program. As an update to my older system which could barely run 98, it was a massive jump in speed for me.

i guess i'll have to wait before getting a similar system that can run vista/ vienna well.

#441139

Revolutionary?

Should have incorporated WinFS (it was a great idea).

Should have supported EFI over BIOS.

Should have emphasized on Speed Improvements than Flashy interface.

Should have reduced numbers of different versions for one OS.

They trashed revolution when they trashed above features, Vista is definitely a good OS.... but after 5 years of Development User deserves a Revolution for his bucks... not interface evolution and enhancement of existing features.

I ain't spending my money on it for sure, my XP runs good and I'll stick to it for long time. When times comes for my current Hardware upgrade and Vista prices go down I'll consider my options, till then it's still "Hasta-la--- VISTA" !!

Keep in mind there was a code-reset halfway through the project. For all the trouble this project went through, Vista is a fairly impressive OS.

If that's the excuse MS going to push and tell "See, we actually stated Vista Development two years earlier" then it's sad to see that they wasted three years earlier behind nonsense stuff. Besides, Code reset does not mean that everything was drafted from scratch again, Original idea/draft/framework "Longhorn/Vista" still remained, only the code part was done again. Which again isn't really a big deal since quite some chunk of "trashed" code is still usable.

Oh.. and Levi... Win2000 was a pretty solid product, I was using it almost till XP SP2 came out. I always hated Win 9x, I was NT boy since the start... I wouldn't have gone for XP hadn't it been NT kernel based.

#441150

I'll throw in my last two cents on the topic and leave it at that.

Anyone who believes that Vista is just XP with a new UI has never USED Vista.

They're talking out of there a$$.

#441165

I wrote something a little while ago on Vista, but i don't want to have to re-write it, so I am pasting it here.

For Windows XP users, it’s a pretty nice upgrade, but until it’s used in many places may not be worth the purchase. I’ve looked at it and used it while it was in RC1, and liked what I saw. Most applications worked, the GUI looked nice, and is an overall nice operating system to me. From the viewpoint of an Apple “fanboy”, you could say, I think it’s a big improvement, and may use it in the future.

Better than XP, not as good as OS X, IMO.

I have used Vista. period.

Sure the explorer is well upgraded, and has some radical refinements such as search as you type, new views/zoom, etc... but go into the properties section and your greeted by XP... also whats with the control panel?... they could have made that a LOT better, theres a billion new icons but the search never finds what im looking for like it does in OSX.

Yes... I remember reading a PC mag ages and ages ago, when 'Longhorn' was virtually unheard of, it was SO much different to how it is now, and i remember looking at the early screenies (which could have just been some cheap mockups made by the mag) and thinking WOW! now that would be revolutionary...

OK, i take back what I said about Win2000, but I had trouble with it. Why did they bother releasing Me?

I find it's ugly, the default icons are ugly... and i also HATE how the toolbars and everything is revolved around IE 7 (yuck :().

Your such a fanboy :P

But yeah I dont like how vista's toolbars either, and that light glossy colouring scheme they use; makes me want to throw up.

#441170

there's also something else Vista falls short of: an overall point to use it.

#441174

Why did they bother releasing Me?
Now that..... is a million dollar question !!

@rjhonstone: I haven't used Vista as yet neither I've seen it real on any desktop, but I DO NOT think it's just XP with UI update. Vista as in itself a an improved OS, but it still falls short of calling NEXT BIG STEP in windows. You're right saying that using it, is a different experience... but as you said it yourself :

Good, but unfinished.

With all the hype made with Longhorn/Vista over past year n half, we all expected something really revolutionary. But they kept dropping features and it annoys me.

Windows XP was revolutionary, at least for desktop user since before XP... Win9x and ME (ugh) was majority desktop OS and NT/2000 ruled Power User's desktops. XP bridged that gap, virtually merged Power User's and Home User's worlds. It was like something for everyone.

#441175

I'm guessing the reason that they released ME was because it came with RunDLL32.EXE, which wasn't included in 2000... so that means the control panel, appearances preferences, and every other aspect was a sepereate executable file. It would probaly take to much work and/or frustration to provide it as a new update, so they just went and took the easy way out.

Once again, this is all in theory, so feel free to correct me.

#441176

I guess thats what im trying to say here as well... Yes I know theres a little more to it than just a new theme, and the experience is a little different... but to the average user?

What annoys me, is that while Vista is mostly a new experience and feel on a basic navigational level (ie- in explorer), there are still little bits of XP annoyance scattered throughout, especially behind the works.

#441206

Just wait till applications built with WPF start appearing and then tell me that Vista is XP with sugar-coating.
